Implementation of ARM based Embedded System for Muscular Sense into both Color and Sound Conversion (근감각-색·음 변환을 위한 ARM 기반 임베디드시스템의 구현)

  • This paper focuses on a real-time hardware processing by implementing the ARM Cortex-M4 based embedded system, using a conversion algorithm from a muscular sense to both visual and auditory elements, which recognizes rotations of a human body, directional changes and motion amounts out of human senses. As an input method of muscular sense, AHRS(Attitude Heading Reference System) was used to acquire roll, pitch and yaw values in real time. These three input values were converted into three elements of HSI color model such as intensity, hue and saturation, respectively. Final color signals were acquired by converting HSI into RGB color model. In addition, Three input values of muscular sense were converted into three elements of sound such as octave, scale and velocity, which were synthesized to give an output sound using MIDI(Musical Instrument Digital Interface). The analysis results of both output color and sound signals revealed that input signals of muscular sense were correctly converted into both color and sound in real time by the proposed conversion method.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 운동강도(최대근수축의 10, 30, 50, 70%)에 따라 유발되는 국소적인 근피로가 슬관절의 위치감각 인지에 미치는 영향을 연구함으로써 근력강화의 운동치료적 효과와 운동학습과 관련된 효과를 동시에 만족시키는 최적의 운동강도를 제시하는 것이었다. 대상자는 건강한 성인여자 40명이었다. 청각을 통한 위치감각 정보를 제공하는 장치와 원판 각도계가 부착된 등속성 Cybex를 사용하였다. 근피로의 상태를 확인하기 위해서 근전도를 이용하여 주파수 스펙트럼 분석을 실시하였다. 청각되먹임이 주어진 각도와 대상자에 의해 재생되어진 각도의 오차값들과 근피로의 변화를 비교하기 위해 일요인 분산분석을 이용하였다. 오차값들의 평균은 50%의 군에서 가장 작았으며 근피로 또한 70%의 군에서만 크게 생성되었다. 따라서 최대 근 수축력의 50%가 운동치료 시 가장 효과적인 운동강도임을 알 수 있었다.

The Effects of Mechanical Stimulation using Graston on Changing Trigger Point Pressure Pain Threshold and Muscle Tone of the Same Spinal Segment in Neck Disk Patient (목 디스크 환자에게 그라스톤을 이용한 기계적 자극 시 동일 척수 분절의 통증 유발점 압통 역치 및 근 긴장도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify whether cutaneous sensory (CS) changes induced by mechanical intervention(MI) increases the trigger point threshold and muscle tone of the same spinal segment to neck disc patients. Thirty persons with Neck disc patients were recruited in this experiment. The subjects consisted of 10 men and 20 women. The mechanical stimulus group induced CS changes for 5 minutes using the Graston instrument and the control group received no action. The CS changes were estimated by using the Von Frey Filament, PPT changes were measured by using the pressure threshold meter and msucle tone changes were measured by using Myotone pro. CS threshold increased significantly when MI was applied (p<0.05). On the same spinal segment, increases in the right infraspinatus PPT and muscle tone was observed (p<0.05) and decreases in the right trapezius PPT was observed(p<0.05). However, the PPT and muscle tone changes in other muscles were not significantly different. Furthermore, the control group CS, PPT and muscle tone were not significantly different. As a result, CS changes induced by MI make to change PPT and muscle tone on the same spinal segment. Therefore, application of MI to the same spinal segment may be of clinical significance as a new rehabilitation method for increasing pain threshold, muscle tone and pain control in neck disc patients.

The System of Converting Muscular Sense into both Color and Sound based on the Synesthetic Perception (공감각인지 기반 근감각신호에서 색·음으로의 변환 시스템)

  • As a basic study on both engineering applications and representation methods of synesthesia, this paper aims at building basic system which converts a muscular sense into both visual and auditory elements. As for the building method, data of the muscular sense can be acquired through roll and pitch signals which are calculated from both three-axis acceleration sensor and the two-axis gyro sensor. The roll and pitch signals are then converted into both visual and auditory information as outputs. The roll signals are converted into both intensity elements of the HSI color model and octaves as one of auditory elements. In addition, the pitch signals are converted into both hue elements of the HSI color model and scales as another one of auditory elements. Each of the extracted elements of the HSI color model is converted into each of the three elements of the RGB color model respectively, so that the real-time output color signals can be obtained. Octaves and scales are also converted and synthesized into MIDI signals, so that the real-time sound signals can be obtained as anther one of output signals. In experiments, the results revealed that normal color and sound output signals were successfully obtained from roll and pitch values that represent muscular senses or physical movements, depending on the conversion relationship based on the similarity between color and sound.

The Effect of Muscular strength, Sensation, and Spasticity of the Hip Joint on Balance in Chronic Stroke Patients (엉덩관절의 근력, 감각과 경직이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of muscular strength, sensation, and spasticity of the hip joint on balance using clinical tools in chronic stroke patients. Thirty-two subjects participated. It were measured muscular strength of the hip flexor, extensor, abductor, and adductor using manual muscle testing, light touch sensibility, and spasticity of the quadriceps using the modified Ashworth scale in the paretic lower extremity. Also, static and dynamic balance were measured by the functional balance scale. Collected data was analyzed by stepwise multiple regression. Muscular strength of the hip abductor, light touch sensibility, and spasticity were associated with static balance(p<0.05) and explanatory power was 80.5%. Muscular strength of the hip abductor and light touch sensibility were associated with dynamic balance(p<0.05) and explanatory power was 77.9%. Thus, it is suggested that muscular strength of the hip abductor and light touch sensibility is considered when providing evaluation and intervention programs for the future in the balance.

Effects of Scapular Taping on Muscle Activity, Pain, Range of Motion and Proprioception in Subacute Stroke Patients (아급성 편마비환자의 어깨관절 Scapular Taping적용이 근 활성도와 통증, 관절가동범위 및 고유수용성감각에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of scapular taping on muscle activities of the scapular rotators and anterior deltoid, ROM, shoulder pain, proprioception in subacute stroke patients. Twenty-eight patients were randomly assigned to an experimental and control groups of fourteen patients respectively. Muscle activity of upper and lower trapezius, serratus anterior, anterior deltoid was measured using surface electromyography. Visual analog scale was used for shoulder pain. Electro-Goniometry was used for shoulder elevation ROM. Assessment board was used for shoulder elevation proprioception. The muscle activity of the lower trapezius and serratus anterior increased significantly after scapular tape application (p<0.05). The AROM and PROM in the shoulder elevation significantly increased after scapular tape application (p<0.05). The VAS in the shoulder no significantly decreased after scapular tape application (p>0.05). The proprioception in the shoulder no significantly increased after scapular tape application (p>0.05). The results of this study suggest that scapular taping can be used an additional therapy for increasing muscle activity of lower trapezius and serratus anterior and ROM during shoulder elevation in subacute stroke patients.

Effect of fabric Sound from Active Wear on Electrodiagnosis and Subjective Sensation and Sensibility (스포츠웨어용 직물의 소리특성이 근전도와 주관적 감각 . 감성에 미치는 영향)

  • The objectives of this study the effects of fabric noise from active wear on electrodiagnosis(EMG), to examine the effects on subjective sensation, and to relate the EMG results and the subjective sensation.. Five nylon water repellent taffeta fabrics were rubbed each other and the fabric noise were recorded. EMG was done from 10 female university students and electrodes were attached on each participant's upper arm and lower am. The subjective sensation was measured by FMME(Free Modulus Magnitude Estimation). The EMG values from upper arm showed higher voltage than those from lower arm, and the differences between values with fabric sound and without were larger at upper arm than those at lower am. EMG decreased when fabric sound was evaluated soft and pleasant, however It increased in proportion as fabric sound was evaluated loud and sharp. The predicted models for subjective sensation using physical sound properties and EMG results were well explained except roughness. Pleasantness was well predicted by EMG at upper am and EMG at lower arm, as the result, it was explained that the lower the EMG, the more pleasant the participant.

The Proprioceptive Function of Rotator Cuff Tear Patients: Preliminary Report of Pre-operative Function (회전근개 파열 환자의 고유 수용성 감각 기능: 수술전 기능의 예비 보고)

  • Purpose: Proprioceptive function has been known to be important to shoulder stability. However, the function in rotator cuff tear patients is rarely investigated. The purpose of current study is to report the proprioceptive function in rotator cuff tear patients and to analyze the proprioceptive function regarding the tear size and the presence of subscapularis tear. Materials and Methods: Between 2011 and 2012, total 76 patients (male 28 and female 48) were recruited and average age was 61.7 years old (range, 38~76). Preoperatively, joint position senses in internal and external rotation were measured for proprioceptive function testing by method of active re-positioning technique. The absolute difference from set point was measured. Proprioceptive function was further analyzed according to tear size of rotator cuff, the presence of subscapularis tear, visual analogue scale of pain, shoulder functional score (American society of elbow and shoulder score), and ranges of motion in shoulder. Results: The absolute difference for external rotation was $4.9^{\circ}{\pm}2.9^{\circ}$, in normal joint and $4.9^{\circ}{\pm}3.0^{\circ}$for involved joint in rotator cuff tear patients. This difference was not significant statistically (p=0.87). The absolute difference for internal rotation was $4.0^{\circ}{\pm}2.7^{\circ}$in normal joint whereas $4.8^{\circ}{\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ for involved joint showing statistically significant difference (p=0.043). There was some trend that the proprioceptive function of internal rotation was more impaired in the bigger tear size group (more than medium tear) compared to the smaller tear size group (partial thickness and small tear, 5.0 vs. 4.0, p=0.061). The impairment of internal rotation proprioception was also accentuated in patients with subscapularis tear (4.8 vs. 4.0, p=0.065). The proprioceptive function of internal rotation was decreased when the pain visual analogue scale was increased (5.2 vs. 4.0 p=0.04), shoulder functional score was decreased (6.1 vs. 4.2, p=0.005), or range of motion in shoulder joint was restricted (5.3 vs. 3.7, p=0.041). Conclusion: The deficit of proprioceptive function was observed in rotator cuff tear patients. Proprioception for internal rotation was impaired in patients with the bigger tear size and subscapularis tear. Pain, shoulder function score, and range of motion were also shown to be related with the deficit in proprioceptive function.

The Analysis of Related Variables on the Center of Gravity Deviation: Focus on the Musculoskeletal Pain (중력중심 이동과 관련 변인분석 -근골격계 통증을 중심으로-)

  • 본 연구에서는 근골격계 통증이 자세유지와 균형능력에 핵심이 되는 중력중심 이동에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아봄으로서, 균형과 자세에 영향을 주는 다양한 요소들에 대한 새로운 접근을 시도해 보고자 한다. I-병원의 입원 및 외래 환자 중 신경계 손상이 없고 중력중심 이동에 직접적인 영향을 줄 수 있는 하지에 정형외과적 장애가 없으며, 전정계 손상이나 시력장애로 인한 균형에 문제가 없이 근골격계 질환으로 요통과 견통을 주소로 하는 71명의 환자(남자 38, 여자 33; 평균연령=44, 표준편차=13.8, 범위=19~79)와 신경계, 근골격계 및 평형감각에 문제가 없는 정상인 30명의 대조군(남자 16, 여자 14; 평균연령=39.2, 표준편차=13.7, 범위=21~72)을 대상으로 전산화된 힘판을 이용하여 중력중심 이동의 궤적을 표준편차값으로 측정하였다. 측정된 중력중심 이동값은 두 군간에 상이한 차이를 보이고 있음이 검증되었다(p<.01). 또 측정된 여러 변수들의 중력중심 이동에 대한 영향력을 알아보기 위해 나이, 체중 및 신장과 중력중심 이동과의 상관분석 결과 중력중심 이동의 15.8%를 체중의 변화에 의한 것으로 설명할 수 있다는 결과를 얻었으며, 그 외의 변수들과의 연관성에 대해선 유의미한 차이가 없었다(p<.01). 결과적으로 근골격계 통증은 올바른 자세유지와 균형유지를 위한 감각통합과 반응과정에 직접, 간접적으로 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 중력 중심 이동이 크면 클수록 중심을 잡기 위한 근육활동으로 추가적인 에너지가 사용되고, 편중된 중력중심 이동은 근골격계에 무리한 부담을 주어 통증을 증가시킬 수 있을 것이다. 또 통증으로 인한 중력중심 이동은 이를 보상하기 위해 신체 먼 곳에서의 이차적인 변형을 초래하여 각종 근골격계 증상의 원인이 될 수 있으므로 근골격계에 대한 적절한 치료는 통증을 감소시켜 자세의 이차적인 변형을 막고 자세유지 시 작용하는 근육의 에너지 효율을 높일 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
