  • In order to develop a quantitation method for Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid(PFOS) contained in plastics that are mainly used in electric and electronic equipment, this study consisted of conducting method validations with LDPE samples using soxhlet solvent extraction and LC/MS. As a result, the limits of detection and quantitation (LOD, LOQ) were $2.58{\mu}g/L$ and $7.82{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Additionally, the recovery was 96-102%. For the correlation coefficient of LC/MS, the $r^2$ value was 0.9992 in the concentration range of $7.82-100{\mu}g/L$, which confirmed its linearity. Furthermore, for the standardization of the analysis method for PFOS in electric and electronic equipment to correspond to EU environmental regulations, we conducted a proficiency test with a number of domestic and international testing laboratories. Three of the ten testing laboratories that participated in the proficiency test submitted outliers. Accordingly, we examined the cause of the outliers using the $^{19}F$ NMR, finding that the main cause was an error in the processing of the results for isomers in PFOS that existed in standard solutions and samples.

  • In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of TiN-Zr membrane manufacturing process. The software of MLCA was Gabi. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process. Transition metal nitrides have been researched extensively because of their properties. Among these, TiN has the most attention. TiN is a ceramic materials which possess the good combination of physical and chemical properties, such as high melting point, high hardness, and relatively low specific gravity, high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance. With these properties, TiN plays an important role in functional materials for application in separation hydrogen from fossil fuel. Precursor TiN was synthesized by sol-gel method and zirconium was coated by ball mill method. The metallurgical, physical and thermodynamic characteristics of the membranes were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermo Gravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) and Gas Chromatograph System (GP). As a result of characterization and normalization, environmental impacts were 94% in MAETP (Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% FAETP (Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% HTP (Human Toxicity Potential). TiN fabrication process appears to have a direct or indirect impact on the human body. It is believed that the greatest impact that HTP can have on human is the carcinogenic properties. This shows that electricity use has a great influence on ecosystem impact. TiN-Zr was analyzed in Eco-Indicator '99 (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology.

  • This study aims to develop a video-based smart utterance deep analyser (SUDA) application that analyzes semiautomatically the utterances that child and mother produce during interactions over time. SUDA runs on the platform of Android, iPhones, and tablet PCs, and allows video recording and uploading to server. In this device, user modes are divided into three modes: expert mode, general mode and manager mode. In the expert mode which is useful for speech and language evaluation, the subject's utterances are analyzed semi-automatically by measuring speech and language factors such as disfluency, morpheme, syllable, word, articulation rate and response time, etc. In the general mode, the outcome of utterance analysis is provided in a graph form, and the manger mode is accessed only to the administrator controlling the entire system, such as utterance analysis and video deletion. SUDA helps to reduce clinicians' and researchers' work burden by saving time for utterance analysis. It also helps parents to receive detailed information about speech and language development of their child easily. Further, this device will contribute to building a big longitudinal data enough to explore predictors of stuttering recovery and persistence.

  • Identifying students' achievement level and reflecting it on educational policy making or instructional improvement by analyzing the results of nationwide standardized assessment is an integral part of accountability in education. On the basis of this premise, we analyzed the characteristics of National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) items for middle school science subject conducted from 2010 to 2013 by using the option response rate distribution curve, the fittest graph estimated from the response rate of correct/incorrect options by achievement score. Furthermore, we classified the type of option response rate curve in terms of correct and incorrect options. Results of the analysis of option response curve showed that five types of correct option response curve (S-shaped, J-shaped, straight-shaped, F-shaped, and step-shaped) and 4 types of incorrect option response curve (down-slope, flat, mound, and up-slope) were identified. The most common type of items was the combination of S-shaped correct option response curve and down-slope incorrect option response curve, which are considered as appropriate items to discriminate the students according to achievement level. Moreover, correct option response was found to be correlated with incorrect option response. Based on the results, we also discussed some implications on teaching-learning method and classroom assessment in science education.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of argument structure on students' writing in implementation of argument-based inquiry using the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. Participants of this study were 108 8th grade students (three classes). Two classes (68 students) were assigned to an experimental group, and the other class (35 students) was assigned to a comparative group. The experimental group was taught argument-based inquiry using the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach, while the comparative group was taught with the traditional teaching strategy. After implementing this program, the two groups were asked to write summaries using structured argumentation in their writing. The result of this study showed that the experimental group used better argument structure and multimodal representation such as pictures, graphs and examples in evidence than the comparative group. The quality of evidence used in the students' writing was different between two groups. Students of the comparative group only listed fragments of science concepts for evidence to support their claims, but students of the experimental group explained science concepts by giving specific examples. The findings show that argument-based inquiry using the SWH approach was effective on argument structure in students' writing.

  • The dependence of polarographic parameters on pressure and temperature for the reduction of 2.0 ${\times}\;10^{-4}$M 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) and 5.0 ${\times}\;10^{-4}$M 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol(PAR) in buffered methanol-water mixed solution at the dropping mercury electrode, has been discussed. In this experiment the temperature is varied from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 35$^{\circ}C$ and the pressure is ranging from 1 atmosphere to 1,800 atmospheres. The reduction half-wave potentials are shifted to the more positive potentials with increase in pressure. The diffusion currents of two depolarizers become considerably larger with increase in pressure from 1 atmosphere to about 1,000 atmospheres but are getting smaller above 1,000 atmospheres. The slopes of log plot become much larger with increase in pressure, which indicates the more irreversible reduction. The reduction currents of two depolarizers are found to be diffusion controlled over all pressure ranges. The linear relationships between diffusion current and the concentration of two depolarizers are good agreement over all pressure ranges (1 atm∼1,800atm.).

  • The uranium(VI) complexes with new unsaturated macrocyclic ligands of cryptand types and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands have been investigated polarographically in dimethylsulfoxide solvent. The reduction states, electron numbers involved in the reduction process, effects of the added acid on the polarograms of complexes, and the mechanisms of the reduction electrode reactions have been examined. The stability constants and mole-ratio of new complexes were also obtained by polarographic method. The reaction of ligands was controlled by the diffusion in the reduction with four electrons at a step, whereas the redox reaction with six electrons at three steps in $UO_2\;^{2+}$ complexes with macrocyclic ligands and the redox reaction with one electron at a step in $Nd^{3+}$ complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC have been observed. The imine ligands formed stable complexes with uranium(VI) above pH 7.0, and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands were stable above pH 4.0.

  • Based on our experience in developing resistive humidity sensor, interdigital gold electrodes with different fingers and gaps have been fabricated on a glass epoxy (GE) substrate using screen printing techniques. The basic structure of the electrode consisted of a 3-, 4- and 5-fingers with gaps of 310 and 460 ${\mu}m$. Gold electrode/GE was prepared by first printing silver nanopaste, followed by consecutive electroless plating of Cu, Ni and then Au. Copolymer of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (MDBAC) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was used as a humidity-sensing polyelectrolyte, which was fabricated by a screen printing method on the Au electrode/GE substrate. The flexible humidity sensor showed acceptable linearity between logarithmic impedance and relative humidity in the range of 20-95%RH, low hysteresis of 1.5%RH, good response and recovery time of 75 sec at 1 V, 1 kHz, and $25^{\circ}C$. Electrode construction had a significant influence on the humidity-sensing characteristics of polymeric humidity sensors. The activation energy between electrode and ion conducting polyelectrolyte plays an important role in explaining the differences of humidity sensing characteristics such as temperature dependence, sensitivity, linearity and hysteresis.

  • Acetylenic or phenylethynyl end-capped polyisoimide oligomers ($M_w$ 2500 g/mol, 5000 g/mol) based upon 4,4'-diamino diphenyl ether (4,4'-ODA)/4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-ODA/3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) were synthesized by using 4-ethynylaniline (4-EA) or 4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride (4-PEPA) as an end capper. The incorporation of ethynyl groups were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The isomerization temperature was influenced by molecular weight as well as the backbone structure of polyisoimides oligomers. Thus, polyisoimide oligomers with molecular weight of 2500 g/mol was found to be imidized at temperature $10^{\circ}C$ lower than that for the oligomers with molecular weight of 5000 g/mol. The crosslinking reaction of ethynyl groups occurred at a higher temperature than that for the isoimide/imide isomerization reaction. These two reactions were totally or partially overlapped on the DSC thermograms for the polyisoimide oligomer end-capped with 4-EA. Kinetics of thermal imidization and crosslinking reactions for the 4,4'-ODA/ODPA polyisoimide oligomers end-capped with 4-PEPA were investigated by performing dynamic DSC experiments at heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. The activation energy and pre-exponential factors were 141 kJ/mol and $1.45{\times}10^{13}min^{-1}$ for the imidization reaction and 177 kJ/mol and $2.90{\times}10^{13}min^{-1}$ for the crosslinking reaction, respectively.
