  • This paper presents results of an experimental study conducted to investigate the effect of volume fraction of fibers on the mechanical properties of a fiber-reinforced, lightweight aggregate concrete(FRLAC) that was produced without an autoclave process. The FRLAC enhanced the strength of lightweight, cellular concrete by adding polypropylene fibers and lightweight aggregates. To investigate the effect of volume fraction of fibers on the mechanical behavior of FRLAC and to determine the optimal volume fraction of fibers, a series of compression and flexural strength tests on FRLAC specimens with various fiber volume fractions(0%, 0.10%, 0.25%, 0.50%) were conducted. It was observed from the tests that a 0.25% volume fraction of fibers maximized the increase in the strength of FRLAC and the fibers controlled cracking in FRLAC.

  • This research investigates the effects of shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) on the mechanical behavior of strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC). SHCC material with specified compressive strength of 50 MPa was mixed and tested in this study. All SHCC mixes reinforced with volume fraction of 2.2% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and test variables are type and dosage of shrinkage reducing agents. The shrinkage reducing materials used in this study are phase change material as the thermal stress reducing materials that have the ability to absorb or release the heat. The effect of SRA was examined based on the change in length caused by shrinkage and hardened mechanical properties, specially compressive, tensile and flexural behaviors, of SHCC material. It was noted that SRA reduces change in length caused by shrinkage at early age. SRA can also improve the tensile and flexural strengths and toughness of SHCC material used in this study.

  • As fiber reinforced composite materials are widely used in aircraft, space structures and robot arms, the study on non-destructive testing methods has become an important research area for improving their reliability and safety. AE (acoustic emission) can evaluate the defects by detecting the emitting strain energy when elastic waves are generated by the initiation and growth of crack, plastic deformation, fiber breakage, matrix cleavage, or delamination. In the paper, AE signals generated under uniaxial tension were measured and analyzed using the $8{\times}8$ matrix piezo electric sensor. The electronic circuit to control the transmitting distance of AE signals was designed and constructed. The optical data storage system was also designed to store the AE signal of 64channels using LED (light emitting diode) elements. From the tests, it was shown that the source location and propagation path of AE signals in composite materials could be detected effectively by the $8{\times}8$ matrix piezo electric sensor.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain the fundamental fire resistance performance of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) under fire temperature in order to use the fire protection material in high-strength concrete structures. The present study conducted the experiment to simulate fire temperature by employing of ECC and investigated experimentally the explosion and cracks in heated surface of these ECC. In the experimental studies, 5 HSC specimens are being exposed to fire, in order to exami ne the influence of vari ous parameters (such as depth of layer=20, 30, 40 mm; construction method=lining and repairing type) on the fire performance of HSC structures. Employed temperature curve were ISO 834 criterion (3 hr), which are severe in various criterion of fire temperature in building structures. The numerical regressive analysis and proposed equation to calculate ambient temperature distribution is carried out and verified against the experimental data. By the use of proposed equation, the HSC members subjected to fire loads were designed and discussed.

  • The objective of this experiment is to observe the elastic and inelastic behaviors of high-rise reinforced concrete frames having non-seismic details. To do this, a building frame designed according to Korean seismic code and detailed in the Korean conventional practice was selected. A 1:12 scale plane frame model was manufactured according to similitude law. A reversed lateral load test and a monotonic pushover test were performed under the displacement control. To simulate the earthquake effects, the lateral force distribution was maintained to be an inverse triangle by using a whiffle tree. From the tests, base shears, crack pattern, local rotations in the ends of critical members and the relations between interstory drift versus story shear are obtained. Based on test results, conclusions are drawn on the implications of the elastic and inelastic behaviors of a high-rise reinforced concrete frame having non-seismic details.

  • In this study TiNi/A16061 shape memory composite is introduced as one of new material using a shape memory alloy. High tensile strength of composite due to compressive residual stress in matrix by the shape memory effect of TiNi fiber can be produced. This composite can remove the tensile residual stress by the difference of coefficients of thermal expansion between fiber and matrix. one of the significant weak point of metal matrix composite. In this paper, shape memory composites are made by squeeze casting. And then, microstructure and fatigue properties of the composites by shape memory effect above inverse transformation temperature A, of TiNi alloy are discussed. The results of the fatigue crack control properties of TiNi/A16061 shape memory composite by a squeeze casting are summarized as follows the effect of fatigue crack propagation control at 363K increases according to the increase of volume fraction and prestrain in composites.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of variations in the mix rate of PVA fiber and the replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh on non-sintering Hwangtoh mortar and concrete mixed with PVA fiber. For water to binder ratio, mortar and concrete were both 50%, and PVA fiber mix rate was 0% and 0.3%. The replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh was 0, 25, 50 and 75(%) for mortar, and 0, 15, 30 and 50(%) for concrete. The properties of the mortar and concrete were compared and analyzed in 4 different levels, and the results can be summarized as follows. The replacement ratio of 30% of the non-sintering Hwangtoh, and the PVA fiber mix rate of 0.3% is determined to result in concrete of high quality, including strength and fluidity, and crack control by plastic shrinkage.

  • Alloy 617 is one of the primary candidate materials to be used in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system as an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX). To investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of Alloy 617 weldments at a high temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, fully reversed strain-controlled fatigue tests were conducted with the total strain values ranging from 0.6~1.5%. The weldment specimens were machined using the weld pads fabricated with a single V-grove configuration by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The fatigue life is reduced as the total strain range increases. For all testing conditions, the cyclic stress response behavior of the Alloy 617 weldments exhibited the initial cyclic strain hardening phenomenon during the initial small number of cycles. Furthermore, the overall fatigue cracking and the propagation or cracks showed a transgranular failure mode.

  • This study evaluates the shear performance of reinforced concrete members with web opening reinforcement. A total of 4 reinforced concrete members with or without openings were cast then tested. The main variables investigated were with or without of web openings and with or without of web opening reinforcement, respectively. The proposed web opening reinforcement was a rectangle and rhombus-shaped spiral considering of construct ability. Test result showed that the proposed web reinforcement had improved shear capacity and ductility of the specimens. It was found that the web opening reinforcement proposed in this study had a positive effect on the shear strength and crack control of RC beams with web openings. In addition, it was confirmed that the analytical results by the current design codes underestimates the test results of the specimens with the proposed web opening reinforcement.
