Static Load Tests on Flexural Strength and Crack Serviceability of a Longitudinal Joint for the Slab-Type Precast Modular Bridges (슬래브 형식 프리캐스트 모듈러교량 종방향 연결부의 휨강도 및 균열 사용성에 관한 정적재하실험)

  • The slab-type precast modular bridge consists of the precast slab bridge modules which are connected in the transverse direction. The longitudinal joints between the precast slab bridge modules are filled with cast-in-place mortar. The construction of the slab-type precast modular bridge is completed by applying the prestressing force on the longitudinal joints. In this study, 4-points bending tests and 3-points bending tests were conducted to examine the effects of the prestressing force and the shape of joint on the flexural strength and crack serviceability of longitudinal joint. The results of 4-points bending tests showed that the flexural strength is affected by the prestressing force but not by the shape of join. From the results of 3-points bending tests by which the bending moment and the shear force are simultaneously applied on the joints of the specimens, it is observed that the shape of joint affects on the flexural strength and the crack behavior. The results of two types of bending tests confirmed that the prestressing force according to the design code is appropriate and the joint with two shear keys gives the better performances against the crack of joint.

Evaluation of Structural Behavior and Serviceability on Transverse Connection for Modular Slab Bridge System (모듈러 슬래브교량의 횡방향 연결부 구조적 거동 및 사용성 평가)

  • Recently, in field of bridge construction, modular technology has been studied to reduce construction period, traffic impact and environmental impact. This study is a part of research related to the modular bridges. The aim of the study is to analyze the structural behavior and evaluate a serviceability for transverse connection of modular slab bridge. A total of four specimens were fabricated. including a control beam for finding the maximum load by static test. And one control beam and two segmental beams were fabricated for cyclic loading test. As the test result, the beams that were introduced 100% of the design prestressing force showed a smaller maximum deflection, residual deflection and crack width than the control beam. The beam for serviceability evaluation was satisfied with structural serviceability limits of the deflection and crack.

Analysis on the Behaviors of Precast Concrete Beam-Column Connections Subject to Cyclic Loading (반복하중을 받는 프리캐스트 콘크리트 건식 보-기둥 연결부의 거동분석)

  • The precast concrete beam-column connectors for the high-rise office buildings were investigated experimentally in this study. The specimens of general precast beam-column connector which is used in a domestic site, specimen of DDC(dywidag ductile connectors) of Germany, and specimen of DDC with post-tensioning and modified DDC with post-tensioning were constructed and tested to verify the safety. The DDC with and without post-tensioning showed reliable joint strength and ductility but failed in critical inclined shear crackings at the column. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The use of prestressing did not helpful significantly to increase the strength and ductility of connectors but helpful only to develop self-centering behavior for stability.

Fatigue Crack Growth of Welded Joints for the Rail of Railroad (철도궤조(鐵道軌條)의 용접연결부(鎔接連結部)에 대한 피로균열성장(疲勞龜裂成長))

  • The welded joint of the rail of railroad had shown the complicated behaviour of fatigue crack growth due to the effect of low toughness, residual stress, welding stress and strain etc. resulting from welding. Also, the welding connection has been necessary as making longer the rail, thus fatique fracture has often occurred at welded joints. From above, in this paper, faigue test was done at base metal, gas pressure and thermit welded joints to give the basic data to construct S-N diagrams. From this, it was known that the base metal was better than welded joint and gas pressure better than thermit welded joints in the resistance against the behaviour of fatigue crack growth. And it was also found that it is very dangerous to control fracture only by the method of material mechanics.

A Study of Statistic Behavior of Segmental U-shaped Prestressed Concrete Girder Applied with Integrated Tensioning Systems (복합긴장방식이 적용된 세그멘탈 U형 거더 정적 거동 연구)

  • Purpose: This study verified the safety of the improved box-type girder behavior by comparing and evaluating the bending behavior results of a full-scale specimen based on the analytical behavior of the splice element PSC U-shaped girder with integrated tensioning systems. Method: Based on the results of the service and strength limit state design using the bridge design standard(limit state design method), the applied load of a 40m full-scale specimen was calculated and a static loading experiment using the four-point loading method was performed. Result: When the design load, crack load, and ultimate load were applied, the specimen deflection occurred at 97.1%, 98.5%, and 79.0% of the analytical deflection value. When the design load, crack load, and ultimate load were applied, the crack gauge was measured at 0.009~0.035mm, 0.014~0.050mm, and 6.383~5.522mm at each connection. Conclusion: The specimen behaved linear-elastically until the crack load was applied, and after cracks occurred, it showed strainhardening up to the ultimate load, and it was confirmed that the resistance of bending behavior was clearly displayed against the applied load. The cracks in the dry joints were less than 25% of grade B based on the evaluation of facility condition standard. The final residual deformation after removing the ultimate load was 0.114mm, confirming the stable behavior of the segment connection.

Behaviors of Joints with Perfobond Rib Shear Connectors in Steel-PSC Hybrid System (Perfobond Rib을 적용한 강-PSC 혼합구조 연결부의 거동 평가)

  • This paper studies the behavior of joints in steel-PSC (prestressed concrete) hybrid beams, which is necessary for the application of hybrid beams to spliced girder bridges, and proposes a new type of joint with improved construction convenience and structural behavior. In the proposed joint, perfobond rib shear connectors are attached to the upper and lower plates, which are expanded from the steel girders and located between the steel girder and the PSC girder. The experimental tests were performed on hybrid beams with the suggested joint. The results showed that all the beams had similar ultimate strengths and failure modes, due to the failure of their PSC parts. The composite action of the perfobond ribs was verified by examining the initial stiffness and cracks of the test beams. In addition, the test beams showed a higher degree of ultimate strength than the beams with stud shear connectors in the joints that had been previously studied. Thus, the proposed joint is effective for the steel-PSC hybrid beam.

A Study on the Allowable Crack Width of RC Beam with Corrosive Environment (염해환경에서의 RC보의 허용 균열폭 산정에 관한 연구)

  • Deterioration of reinforced concrete structures in corrosive environment is tend to be accelerated due to ingress of aggressive ion such as chloride ion. Chloride-induced corrosion is affected by various factors such as cover concrete qualities, width of existing cracks, and cover depth of concrete. However, the allowable crack width of RC structure in design code does not consider the concrete material properties and conditions of construction except the cover depth. In this paper, an equation for allowable crack width is proposed to consider the cover concrete quality, crack width, and cover depth. Crack width, cover depth, and water-cement ratio of concrete are selected as influencing factors on corrosion of reinforcement for rapid chloride tests. From test results, the relationships between the factors and corrosion are derived. Finally, the equation for allowable crack width is derived in terms of concrete compressive strength and cover depth. The presented equation is verified by comparative calculations with design code variables.

The Structural Performance of PSC Frame System with GerberCs beam (게르버 보 형식의 PSC 골조시스템의 구조성능)

  • 이 연구는 게르버 보 형식의 포스트텐션 PC 골조 구조 시스템의 실용화를 위해 골조 전체의 구조 성능 시험을 수행하며, 여기서 보-기둥 접합부 및 내민 보-단순 보 접합부의 구조 성능과 골조의 안전성을 확인한다. 시험은 400 mm$\times$800 mm 단면의 경간 3 m 보와 500 mm$\times$600 mm 단면을 갖는 높이 3 m 기둥의 실물 크기 시험체를 제작하여, 기둥에 80 톤의 축 하중을 준 상태에서 단순 보 중앙에 하중을 가력하여 기둥-보 접합부와 단순 보-내민 보 단면 축소 연결부의 구조성능을 파악한다. 시험 결과, 보 - 기둥 접합부는 예상 설계 하중 40톤 이상에서도 강 접합에 가깝게 거동하였고, 단순 보- 내민 보의 단면 축소 연결부는 경사철근의 사용으로 초기 균열 및 균열 확산에 대한 억제 효과가 있었으며, 예상 설계 전단력 40톤에서 안전하다는 것이 확인되었다.

Modeling of Multi-Stage Hydraulic Fracture Propagation (다단계 수압파쇄균열 전파 모델링 연구)

  • This paper presents a hydraulic fracture propagation model to describe propagation more realistically. In propagating the hydraulic fractures, we have used two criteria: maximum tangential stress to determine the fracture initiation angle and whether a hydraulic fracture intersects a natural fracture. The model was validated for the parameters relevant to fracture propagation, such as initiation angle and crossing ability through natural fracture. In order to check whether a hydraulic fracture crosses a natural fracture, the model results on crossing state excellently matched with the experimental data. In the sensitivity analysis for direction of maximum horizontal stress, frictional coefficient of fracture interface, and natural fracture orientation, the results show that hydraulic fracture intersects natural fracture, and then, propagated suitably with theoretical results according to fracture interaction criterion. In comparison of this model against vertical fracture approach, it was ascertained that there are discrepancies in fracture connectivity and stimulated reservoir volume.

A Three-Dimensional Progressive Failure Model for Joints Considering Fracture Mechanics and Subcritical Crack Growth in Rock (암석파괴역학에 의한 3차원 절리면의 진행성 파괴 모델)

  • A three dimensional rock joint element was developed considering fracture mechanics and subcritical crack growth to simulate non-linear behavior and the progressive failure of rock joints. Using this 3-D joint element, joint shear tests of rock discontinuities were simulated by a numerical method. The asperities on the joint surface began to fail at stress levels lower than the rock fracture toughness and continued progressively due to subcritical crack growth. As a result of progressive failing in each and every asperity, the joint showed non-linear stress-time behavior including stress hardening/softening and the reaching of a residual stress.
