Rock bridge in rock masses can be considered as one of several types of opening-mode fractures, and also it has been known to have a great influence on the stability of structures in rock mass. In the beginning of researching a rock bridge it used to be studied only in characteristics of its behavior, as considering resistance of material itself. However the distribution pattern of rock bridges, which can affect the stability of rock structures, is currently researched with a fracture mechanical approach in numerical studies. For investigating the effect of rock bridges on the development pattern of hydraulic fractures, the author analyzed numerically the stress state transition in rock bridges and their phenomena with a different pattern of the rock bridge distributions. From the numerical studies, a two-crack configuration could be defined to be representative of the most critical conditions for rock bridges, only when cracks are systematic and same in their length and angle. Moreover, coalescence stresses and onset of propagation stresses could be known to increase with decreasing s/L ratio or increasing d/L ratio. The effect of pre-existing crack on hydraulic fracturing was studied also in numerical models. Different to the simple hydraulic fracturing modeling in which the fractures propagated exactly parallel to the maximum remote stress, the hydraulic fractures with pre-existing cracks did not propagate parallel to the maximum remote stress direction. These are representative of the tendency to change the hydraulic fractures direction because of the existence of pre-existing crack. Therefore s/L, d/L ratios will be identical as a function effective on hydraulic fractures propagation, that is, the K$_1$ value increase with decreasing s/L ratio or increasing d/L ratio and its magnification from onset to propagation increases with decreasing s/L ratio. The scanline is a commonly used method to estimate the fracture distribution on outcrops. The data obtained from the scanline method can be applied to the evaluation of stress field in rock mass.
By measuring concrete temperature and strains of concrete and reinforcing bars throughout gages embedded and also by observing the crack occurrence, this study aims at the characteristics of structural behavior of subway wall structure in associate with concrete ages. The length of 23.5m, thickness of 2.0m of real subway custody line was selected as a representative structure and 7 thermocouples and 6 strain gages were installed to measure the behavior of wall structure. The results were compared and verified with analytical results using MIDAS in order to show their usefulness. It was found that only attachment of strain gages on the surface of reinforcing bars can figure out the timing of crack occurrence and hydration heat program is useful to estimate comparatively exact magnitudes of temperature. Since estimated time of crack occurrence throughout thermal stress analysis depends on the period of transferred thermal stress from concrete to reinforcing bars, however, cracks from naked eyes were identified later than analytical results. Cracks were observed first at the center of wall line and then to the end of line symmetrically.

This study was performed to estimate the workability and the static behavior for Bi Prestressed Concrete Girder(Bicon girder) which could introduce effectively prestressed forces into concrete girders. A bicon girder is manufactured by means of introducing pure bending moment that prestress simultaneously the compressive member(steel bar) and the tensile member(steel tendon). Static test was executed for 20m railway bridge girder specimen and evaluated whether pure bending moment was introduced or not, and the behaviors after cracking, and at the ultimate load. Test results showed that a bicon girder had the enough safety in the introduction of pure moment, the serviceability, and the ultimate behavior.
Purpose: This study verified the safety of the improved box-type girder behavior by comparing and evaluating the bending behavior results of a full-scale specimen based on the analytical behavior of the splice element PSC U-shaped girder with integrated tensioning systems. Method: Based on the results of the service and strength limit state design using the bridge design standard(limit state design method), the applied load of a 40m full-scale specimen was calculated and a static loading experiment using the four-point loading method was performed. Result: When the design load, crack load, and ultimate load were applied, the specimen deflection occurred at 97.1%, 98.5%, and 79.0% of the analytical deflection value. When the design load, crack load, and ultimate load were applied, the crack gauge was measured at 0.009~0.035mm, 0.014~0.050mm, and 6.383~5.522mm at each connection. Conclusion: The specimen behaved linear-elastically until the crack load was applied, and after cracks occurred, it showed strainhardening up to the ultimate load, and it was confirmed that the resistance of bending behavior was clearly displayed against the applied load. The cracks in the dry joints were less than 25% of grade B based on the evaluation of facility condition standard. The final residual deformation after removing the ultimate load was 0.114mm, confirming the stable behavior of the segment connection.

In this study, we tested structural performance of Half-Decked PSC girder which was developed for applying to long span bridge. We operated 4 point bending test with 60 m span full scale girder designed as simple bridge with hinge-roller boundary condition. Actuators were set on the both sides of girder, 5.5 m away from the center, and 4 stages of cyclic loading was applied at rate of 1 kN/sec. Through stages 1 to 4, loading and unloading 1,000 kN, 1,200 kN, 1,500 kN, and 2,000 kN were repeated and displacement, strain of concrete and steel, crack of girder were checked. From these results, the strength of girder was assessed and resilience and ductility were observed after removing the load. Since initial flexural crack occurred in the vicinity of 1,400 kN, non-linearity of load-displacement curve appeared and definite residual strain was measured at that point. The test result showed that initial cracking load was over twice the DB-24 load which means the developed girder had sufficient strength. To verify the experimental results, we numerically analyze the test and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. Half-Decked PSC type of 60 m-girder developed in this study showed its adequate structural capacity through static loading test, which proved that possibility of applying the girder to actual bridges practically.

It has been proven that the pre-cracking notches in a blasting hole are applicable to control crack growth along specific direction. This study compared the roughnesses of the fracture plane resulting from test blasts using a regular charge hole and notched charge hole to investigate the effect of the notches of charge hole on the formation of fracture plane. A notch bit system was used to drill the notched hole in the rock specimens. The surfaces of the fracture planes were reconstructed as Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using digital photogrammetric method and the roughnesses of the surfaces were estimated with Surface Roughness Profile Index (SRp).

During the construction of underground space expansion of old facilities, it is necessary to secure temporary residence space for existing residents as well as noise and vibration issues during construction, and in the case of commercial, industrial, and social use, damage is expected from suspension of the use of facilities. There is a need for a technology that minimizes noise and vibration during underground expansion, enabling the use of existing facilities even during construction. In this study, a practical underground extension model is proposed by analyzing the behavior of the temporary structure and the surrounding ground as a result of measurement at each construction stage for a actual construction site. In order to solve the problems that occurred during construction, the basement slabs were placed in advance after the initial excavation. The measurement results (building inclinometer, crack measurement system, structure inclinometer and surface settlement meter) at the site were reviewed to analyze the behavior of the temporary structure and surrounding ground. As a result, it was confirmed that the inclinometer of the building and the structural inclinometer showed a tendency that the displacement after the slab line was placed was reduced or converged. The placement of basement slabs during underground extension not only relived the noise and vibration problems during construction, but also secured the stability of structures.
Ground settlements induced by tunnel excavation cause the foundations of the neighboring building structures to deform. An expert system called NESASS( Neural network Expert System for Adjacent Structure Safety analysis) was developed to analyze the structural safety of such building structures. NESASS predicts the trend of ground settlements resulting from tunnel excavation and carries out a safety analysis for building structures on the basis of the predicted ground settlements. Using neural network technique. the NESASS learns the database consisting of the measured ground settlements collected from numerous actual fields and infers a settlement trend at the field of interest. The NESASS calculates the magnitudes of angular distortion, deflection ratio, and differential settlement of the structure. and in turn, determines the safety of the structure. In addition, the NESASS predicts the patterns of cracks to be formed in the structure, using Dulacska model for crack evaluation. In this study, the ground settlements measured from Seoul subway construction sites were collected and classified with respect to the major factors influencing ground settlement. Subsequently, a database of ground settlement due to tunnel excavation was built. A parametric study was performed to select the optimal neural network model for the database. A comparison of the ground settlement predicted by the NESASS with the measured ones indicates that the NESASS leads to reasonable predictions. The results of confidence evaluation for safety evaluation system of the NESASS are presented in this paper.

The proper stress history measurement should be conducted in order to examine the accurate cause of fatigue cracks or the fatigue safety in the steel bridge. Only one strain gauge is generally installed in the field for the stress history examination because of the field circumstances, economic feasibility, workability, and so on. However, this method may not consider the actual size of the specific structure, the gauge length, and the affect of stress concentration in the welded joint. In addition, it is difficult to apply for the stress analysis. Therefore, this study suggests improvements that are a great number of gauge installations, the gauge location adjustment, and the use of the minimum length gauge. It is drived the correlative equation of strain for the distance between the welding toe and the strain gauge installation, and compare correlative equation with equation of IIW. Also, this study could estimate the remaining life and fatigue damage of bridge in service by selecting the suitable stress category. In conclusion, it is possible to understand the member which is high in the fatigue cracks, and the quantitative relations between the welding toe and the strain gauge installation distances. The proposed approach in this study can make an more accurate fatigue damage and a remaining life prediction so that the improved method should be applied in measuring the strain of bridges from now on.
