Current initial rock stress state is one of the key factors required to evaluate the stability and failure around an excavated opening and its importance increases as the construction depth become deeper and the scale of the rock structure become larger. In this paper, the study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of the regional stress state at Chuncheon-Yanggu mountainous region, the East-North part of Kyeonggi Massif. Forty nine field stress measurements in 9 boreholes were conducted at the depth from 20 m to 290 m by hydraulic fracturing method. The fracturing tracing works were carried out by acoustic televiewer scanning. The study results revealed that the different intial rock stress states presented at different formation rock type and the excessive horizontal stress state with stress ratio(K) close to 3.0 was measured at the depth of 200 m and deeper in the intrusive unite body of the study area. The results from the investigation of excessive horizontal stress and its effect on failure mode showed that there exist several points where the localized excessive horizontal stresses are big enough to potentially induce brittle failures around the future openings greater than 100 m in depth within the granite body of the study area.
Influence of $TiO_{2}$ addition on sintering behavior and microstructure of MgO-$ZrO_{2}$ composites was studied. $ZrO_{2}$ containing 3mol%Y203 was existed as a c-$ZrO_{2}$ phase due to the formation of solubility of MgO, $TiO_{2}$ and $ZrO_{2}$ when sintered $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h. All the compositions employed exhibited a similar shrinkage behavior with an end-point shrinkage between 8.58 and 11.00%. The additlon of $TiO_{2}$ promoted densification and the bulk density of specimen containing 1.67wt% $TiO_{2}$ was 3.75g/$\textrm{cm}^3$(98% TD) when $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The amount of solubilities of MgO and TiOz in $ZrO_{2}$ were 5.ti7wt% and 2.62wt%,respectively. They were partially segregated near $ZrO_{2}$ grain boundary in the form of Ti-compounds during cooling. This segregation resulted in the formation microcracks which decreased the bending strength.

In this study, a customiz ed bridge system was developed for North Korea application. For the application of North Korea, the customized bridge system design, fabrication, and construction performance evaluation were performed using ultra-high performance concrete a compressive strength 120MPa or more and a direct tensile strength 7MPa or more. The comparison of the North Korean truck luggage load(30, 40, 55) and the Korean standard KL-510 load showed that cross-section increased as the load increased. Furthermore, a bridge with a span length of 30m was fabricated with ultra-high performance concrete for the construction performance evaluation. The evaluation of the load condition analysis was performed by a flexural test. The results showed that a bridge with a span length of 30m secured about 167% of sectional performance under initial cracking load conditions and about 134% of load bearing capacity under ultimate load conditions. As a result of economic analysis, the customized bridge system using ultra-high-performance concrete was less than about 11% of the upper construction cost compared to the steel composite girder bridge. Therefore, these results suggest that the price competitiveness can be secured when applying the ultra-high-performance concrete long-span bridge developed through this study.

The effect of Ar/N2 two-step plasma treatment on the quantitative interfacial adhesion energy of low temperature Cu-Cu bonding interface were systematically investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that Ar/N2 2-step plasma treatment has less copper oxide due to the formation of an effective Cu4N passivation layer. Quantitative measurements of interfacial adhesion energy of Cu-Cu bonding interface with Ar/N2 2-step plasma treatment were performed using a double cantilever beam (DCB) and 4-point bending (4-PB) test, where the measured values were 1.63±0.24 J/m2 and 2.33±0.67 J/m2, respectively. This can be explained by the increased interfacial adhesion energy according phase angle due to the effect of the higher interface roughness of 4-PB test than that of DCB test.

In the NRC (New paradigm Reinforced Concrete) beam, steel forms, main angles used as main reinforcements, and shear angles used as basic shear reinforcements are welded and assembled in the form of vierendeel truss structures in a steel factory. After the NRC truss frame is installed at the site, additional main reinforcement and shear reinforcement are distributed. In this study, the shear performance evaluation of the NRC beam was conducted through shear tests in accordance with the type of shear reinforcement of the NRC beam (shear angle, inclined shear reinforcing bar, and U-type cover bar). As a result of the test, the initial stiffness was similar before the initial cracking of each specimen, and all specimens were shear fractured. The shear reinforcements of the specimens exhibited a yielding behavior at the time of the maximum sheat force, and the shear strengths of the specimens increased as the amount of reinforcement of the shear reinforcement increased. These results show that NRC shear reinforcements exhibit shear performance corresponding to their shear strength contribution. As a result of calculating the nominal shear strengths according to KDS 14 20 22, the experimental shear strengths of the NRC beam specimens with shear reinforcement was 37~146% larger than the nominal shear strengths, so It was evaluated as a safety side.

In this study, the rheological characteristics and of 3D printing composite materials and the compressive strength characteristics according to the lamination patterns were evaluated. As a result of rheology test, rapid material change was observed after 60 minutes of extrusion, yielding stress 1.4 times higher than immediately after mixing, and plastic viscosity was 14.94-25.62% lower. The compressive strength of the specimens manufactured in the mold and the laminated specimens were compared, and the lamination pattern of the laminated specimens were 0°, 45°, and 90° as variables. The compressive strength of the mold casting specimen and the laminated specimen from 1 to 28 days of age showed similar performance regardless of the lamination pattern. In particular, at the age of 28 days, the modulus of elasticity, maximum compressive strength, and strain at maximum stress of all specimens were almost the same. In order to analyze the interface of the laminated specimens, X-ray CT analysis of the specimen whose compressive strength were measured was performed. Through CT analysis, it was confirmed that cracks did not occur at the lamination interface, which can be judged that the interface in the laminated specimen behaved in an integrated manner.
Bentonite is widely recognized and utilized as a buffer material in high-level radioactive waste repositories, mainly due to its favorable characteristics such as swelling capability and low permeability. Bentonite buffers play an important role in ensuring the safe disposal of radioactive waste by providing a low permeability barrier and effectively preventing the migration of radionuclides into the surrounding rock. However, the long-term performance of bentonite buffers still remains a subject of ongoing research, and one of the main concerns is the erosion of the buffer induced by swelling and groundwater flow. The erosion of the bentonite buffer can significantly impact repository safety by compromising the integrity of buffer and leading to the formation of colloids that may facilitate the transport of radionuclides through groundwater, consequently elevating the risk of radionuclide migration. Therefore, it is very important to numerically quantify the erosion of bentonite buffer to evaluate the long-term performance of bentonite buffer, which is crucial for the safety assessment of high-level radioactive waste disposal. In this technical note, Two-region model is introduced, a proposed model to simulate the erosion behavior of bentonite based on a dynamic bentonite diffusion model, and quantitative evaluation is conducted for the bentonite buffer erosion with this model.
The anisotropic behavior of rocks is primarily attributed to the directional arrangement of rock-forming minerals and the distribution characteristics of microcracks. Notably, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks often exhibit distinct transverse isotropy in terms of their strength and deformation characteristics. Consequently, it is crucial to gain accurate insights into the deformation and failure characteristics of transversely isotropic rocks during rock mechanics design processes. The deformation of such rocks is described by five independent elastic constants, which are determined through laboratory testing. In this study, the characteristics of the directional variation of apparent elastic constants in transversely isotropic rocks were investigated using experimental data reported in the literature. To achieve this, the constitutive equation proposed by Mehrabadi & Cowin was introduced to calculate the apparent elastic constants more efficiently and systematically in a rotated Cartesian coordinate system. Four transversely isotropic rock types from the literature were selected, and the influence of changes in the orientation of the weak plane on the variations of the apparent elastic modulus, apparent shear modulus, and apparent Poisson's ratio was analyzed. Based on the investigation, a new constraint on the elastic constants has been proposed. If the proposed constraint is satisfied, the directional variation of the apparent elastic constants in transversely isotropic rocks aligns with intuitive predictions of their tendencies.

Minimizing the self weight of long-span deck slabs is one of the key factors for the practical and economic design of a composite two-girder bridge. In this paper, the minimum design thickness and rebar details of prestressed concrete deck slabs for composite two-girder bridges with girder span length from 4 m to 12 m are studied based on the safety and serviceability. The bridge deck slab with minimum thickness is designed as a one-way slab considering orthotropic behavior. Then fatigue safety of the deck slab is examined. Serviceability requirements for the deck slab such as deflection and crack width limits are also examined. The result shows that rebars with diameter less than 16 mm is recommended for the improved fatigue behavior, and, for the deck slab with span length longer than 8 m, the deflection limit governs the minimum design thickness. The result also shows that, for the deck slab with span length longer than 4 m, the distribution rebar requirement in the current Korea Highway Bridge Design Code is not sufficient to maintain the structural continuity in bridge axis as expected from the deck slab with span length shorter than 3 m.

There is a complex variation of stress in PSC anchorage zones and box girder diaphragms because of large concentrated load by prestress. According to the AASHTO LFRD design code, three-dimensional effects due to concentrated jacking loads shall be investigated using three-dimensional analysis procedures or may be approximated by considering separate submodels for two or more planes. In this case, the interaction of the submodels should be considered, and the model loads and results should be consistent. However, box girder diaphragms are 3-dimensional disturbed region which requires a fully three-dimensional model, and two-dimensional models are not satisfactory to model the flow of forces in diaphragms. In this study, the strengths of the prestressed box girder diaphragms are predicted using the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach, which were tested to failure in University of Texas. According to the analysis results, the 3-dimensional strut-tie model approach can be possibly applied to the analysis and design of PSC box girder anchorage zones as a reasonable computer-aided approach with satisfied accuracy.
