This article aims to discover the current status and appropriate way to research Gyubang craft, expecting its development and preservation, and elevating it to Korea's unique artistic textile culture. It also searches improved methods for Gyubang craft as the following: First, in order to avoid confusions about Gyubang craft, appropriate concepts and definitions of Gyubang craft must be settled through a discussion among experts. Second, by activating economic activities at lower ratio, among purposes of Gyubang craft, achievements must be elevated. Third, in order to settle down the difficulties of Gyubang craft, a variety of methods such as effective sewing machines and manufacturing techniques as well as providing materials at a reasonable price, considering practical ways through diversifying products, elevating the economy of crafts, exploring sales routes, improving educational contents, and expanding educational places must be facilitated. Fourth, for nurturing talented and excellent human resources in the area of Gyubang craft, the followings should be considered: diversifying contents of education, developing textbooks, improving instructors' quality, providing reasonable cost of education, educating on the utilization and application of Gyubang craft, introducing efficient teaching methods through textbooks and multimedia, awarding 'certificates' to trainees, and permitting certificate holders' to instruct Gyubang craft. Finally, it is convinced that the achievement of production, pride of preserving tradition, pleasure of procedural work, economic activities as experts, and sales of products will be reinforced, and the population for Gyubang craft is also expected to increase. By elevating Gyubang craft into Korea's traditional textile art, Korea's global competitiveness in the area of textile should be strengthened.

Korean traditional wedding ceremony was conducted with some regular procedure and there were used some Gyubang crafts for wedding ceremony. But perhaps there has not been systematic information about them. Nowadays there is common the western style wedding ceremony instead of traditional style in Korea. So the decrease in the use of them have being appeared. Purposes of this study are to organize the resources about them systematically data of Gyubang crafts used traditional wedding ceremony, and to investigate characteristics of them for propose some idea of application them in the life of today. The results are as follows : Gyubang crafts used traditional wedding ceremony can be separated roughly into four types in use : wrapping clothes, cloth bags, ornaments and items related to sewing. They were apt to be traditionality, symbolic meaning and shamanism, and were superior in aesthetic sense, the effect of decoration and technical skill than other Gyubang crafts. There'll be some follow-up studies on ideas for preserving and appling in modern life.

Purposes of this study are to investigate characteristics of and to propose some idea of preservation and application them in the life of today. The results are as follows; Wedding Gyubang crafts can be classified Bojagj(wrapping clothes), Jumeony(cloth bags), ornaments, items related to sewing and others. They were apt to be traditionality, symbolism and shamanism, and were superior in aesthetic sense, the effect of decoration and technical skill. So there was needed preservation them. Some way of preservation and applications them were suggested ; alternation in keeping with modern needs, use of ornament, alteration in present-day life, application their image to Korean cultural products, textile design and so on. Several works were developed by ways suggested and exhibited in order to arouse new understanding Wedding Gyubang Crafts to public.

인류는 끊임없이 도구를 만들어 사용하였다. 이것은 인류의 역사가 창조적으로 유지되고 발달되어 왔다는 것을 말한다. 인간은 보다 더 나은 삶을 영위하기 위하여 문명적 발전과 더불어 미적 욕구의 충족을 위한 조형성 추구 등 문화적 개발에도 끊임없이 노력해 왔다. 규방용품은 지극히 여성적이고 한국적인 정서를 담고 있으며 한 문화, 예술의 한 장르로서도 평가 되고 있다. 규방공예는 당시의 사회적, 문화적, 종교적 배경을 바탕으로 독자적이고 독특한 조형미를 형성되어 있으며, 여인들의 벗이라고 할 수 있는 침선구는 연인들의 희 노 애 락 속에서 삶의 모습과 정신세계가 문화적 깊이를 갖는 예술적 정서를 나타내고 있다. 여인들의 시대적 삶의 바탕으로 동고동락했던 침선구의 조형적 이미지, 융합적 결합 및 조화를 통한 장신구로 연관하여 재현시킴으로써 보다 구체적이고 현대적인 감각을 표현할 수 있으리라 의도하여 출발 그 가능성을 다각적으로 모색코자 하였다. 이와 같이 여인의 체취와 정신적 염원이 담긴 규방용품 중 침선구 중심으로 그 특성과 조형성, 융합적 조화, 단아함, 섬세함, 미적 아름다움을 재발견하고 전통 문화 예술의 우수성과 미적 가치를 장신구로 재인식 할 수 있는 계기가 되길 기대한다.

During the era of Joseon Dynasty when the Confucian ideas were prevailing all over the manners of living, most women were usually living separated in the boudoirs, the isolated living quarters exclusively for women, where they used to do much troublesome needleworks for the traditional kerchiefs and embroideries for which they poured out their souls and hand skills. And therefore, nowadays, such works are deemed much valuable for either formative or artistic point of view, and their legitimate cultural designs are receiving much publicity from a number of mass communications as one of the national competitive powers. Thus, I, the researcher for the subject study, have completed 1-year researching lessons on the traditional kerchief and embroidery of Ms. Hyeon-Hee Kim, the Mater-hand, at Korea Traditional Handicrafts Institute of Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, and then engaged myself in the creative works relevant to the subject by cultivating the power of understanding to such field, restoring the techniques of the traditional handicrafts, reconstructing them into the modern sensual descriptions, and also trying to apply various transformations and modifications to them.

한국 디자인사의 일반적 접근 경향은 한국의 정치, 경제, 사회적 측면에서 근대화 문제와 관련된 거대 담론에 주로 연구 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 근대화 논의에는, 그러나, 자본주의적 생산양식의 자장 안에서 전개되는 공적, 제도적, 권력적 근대화 외에 일상적인 삶의 양식으로 발현되는 사적, 개인적, 문화적 근대화라는 두 측면이 내재되어 있다. 특히, 현실사회주의의 실패 이후 후자의 관점이 역사학계를 비롯한 제 분야에서 새로운 대안으로 부각되고 있음에도 불구하고, 한국 디자인 역사 연구가들의 근대적 디자인 현상에 대한 역사 인식은 일상적 현실 안에 존재하는 ‘아래로부터의 역사’이기보다는 현실 밖에 담론의 차원으로 존재하는 ‘위로부터의 역사’인 경우가 많았다. 이와 같은 엘리트 중심의 역사인식 틀에 균형감을 부여하기 위해서는 보통 사람들의 자발적인 디자인 행위로 구현된 일상적 삶의 표상들을 연구대상으로 삼음으로써 한국 디자인의 역사를 일상 문화적인 시각을 통해 아래로부터 재구성하는 작업이 요구된다. 이 물음에 대한 한 가지 접근방법은 지순한 한국 어머니 상의 전형인 올해 87세의 양갑조 할머니가 일생동안 제작해 온 규방 공예품을 문화사적 시각으로 읽어내는 일이다. 한국 디자인사의 거시적 담론 속에 묻혀버린 민초들의 일사적인 삶의 구적들에 대한 역사적 반추 작업을 통해 작지만 다층적인 한국 디자인의 의미소들을 발굴해 냄으로써 문화사로서의 한국 디자인의 역사적 전망을 가늠해 보는 전기를 마련하고자 한다.

In the tide of globalization, culture products play pivotal role in effectively introducing our tradition and culture to the world. This research is about developing culture products using our traditional lady's art craft work to attain the purpose of modern application through recreation of tradition along with modern technology. First, the types of traditional lady's art craft work include pouches, wrapping clothes and other accessories made by sewing except costumes. The materials used were cotton, silk, ramie, hemp and decorating techniques involved were embroidery, patchwork, quilting, knot. Second, the purpose of this study is developing culture products with traditional images which also satisfy modern sense. Therefore, items that could be used readily in daily life were selected. Such items include bags, mufflers, name card cases, brooches. In addition, the Korean traditional Patchwork images which have both western-style and modern sense were selected out of the many kinds of traditional lady's art craft works. Third, cultural products (bags, mufflers, name card cases, brooches) were created by DTP in silk with sacdong and free-styled division Korean traditional Patchwork images and quilting technique. The significance of this study lies in examining the possibility of developing modern culture products using traditional lady's art craft work. A way to further develop this study would be to shed new light on traditional crafts and local cultural resources and actively carry on the study of cultural product development to provide the foundation for developing cultural products with modern applications.
