  • This research is concerned with ground experiments for satellite solar array deployment as well as the validation of theoretical modeling technique presented in the previous paper. We carried out the experiments on the strain energy hinge with stopper to investigate he buckling characteristics of the SEH, which affects the shape and the speed of the solar array deployment. The moment-angle diagram obtained from the experiments was later combined with the theoretical deployment model. This paper also presents the details of the ground experiments performed at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) . It was found that the ground experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions thus validating the dynamic modeling technique.

  • The compression and tension test were performed to evaluate the stiffnesses of the conical composite lattice structures and results of test were compared with finite element analysis results. Because of difficulty to perform simple tension and compression test due to conical shape, suitable specimens and jig for test were made. Subelements extracted from the structure were prepared for compression test. Compression test of subelement was performed and compressive strains in fiber direction were measured. Compressive stiffness of the helical rib was verified by finite element analysis results. For stiffness of hoop rib, hoop ring specimens were extracted from the structure. Tension test of hoop ring specimen was performed to apply bending deformation to hoop rib. Stiffness of hoop rib was verified by finite element model considering various fiber volume fraction in thickness direction.

  • The aims of this research were to study on the relationship between the mechanical properties and the deformation behavior of weft-knitted fabrics as a function of knit structure and knit density. Eighteen weft-knitted fabrics were produced with six different knit structures ($1{\times}1$ rib, half-cardigan rib, half-milano rib, interlock, single-pique, and crossmiss interlock) and three different knit densities (loose, medium, tight). The mechanical properties of these samples were measured using the KES-F system. The 2HBIW increased as knit density was raised. The increase was greater for the double knit fabrics in all samples. Half-milano rib and crossmiss interlock samples showed the lowest 2HG/G values. The double knits were smaller than those of single knits indicate a higher degree of surface smoothness. The ratio of compression energy to weight per unit area of the double knits had lower values than the single knits.

  • In this paper, we develop simplified finite element (FE) models for butt-, lap- and T-welded joints by performing numerical and experimental experiments. Three-point bending tests of butt- and lap-welded specimens are performed to obtain the stiffness of the specimens and the strains at points near the welding beads. Similarly the stiffness and strains of T-welded specimen are measured by applying a point load at the end of the specimen. To develop simplified FE models, we consider the shape parameters of width, thickness and the angle of weld elements in the numerical simulations. The shape parameters of the simplified FE models are determined by building linear regression models for the experimental data sets.

  • In this study, inorganic (steel, asbestos and carbon) and organic (polyacryl and polyamide) fibers were used to investigate their reinforcing effects of the physical properties of Portland cement. From the load-displacement curve of each reinforced specimen, fracture strength, Young's module, fracture energy and fracture toughness were computed and compared with each other. In addition, the experiment of their impact toughness was carried out and compared with the fracture energy. For the improvement of fracture strength the inorganic (asbestos) fiber reinforcement was most effective, while the best reinforcing effect of impact toughness was achieved by organic (polyacryl) fiber. And steel fiber proved to be most adequate for improvement of both fracture strength and impact toughness. Steel fiber also showed the highest fracture energy and fracture toughness among all of the fibers.

  • The influences of mixed strain mode of bending-tension on the critical current. Ic in externally reinforced Bi-2223 tapes and their interaction were investigated in this study. A test fixture which providing a mixed deformation mode of bending-tension to HTS tapes has been newly devised. When the total strain induced in the tape in the mixed strain mode was expressed by the superposition of the bending and tensile strains the irreversible strain for the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tapes increased, as compared with the simple bending mode case. The $I_c$ degradation at the region exceeding the irreversible strain showed a medium between the simple bending case and the simple tension case. As the initial bending strain imparted increased , namely as the diameter of mandrel adopted decreased. the apparent irreversible strain in Bi-2223 tapes increased . but the increment became smaller As a result. it can be found that the tension to be applied to bent Bi-2223 tapes during cabling should be smaller. as the mandrel diameter becomes smaller.

  • Piezoelectric materials are well-utilized for transforming mechanical vibrations into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power a diversity of devices. In this work, these materials have been studied to improve the efficiency of a piezoelectric system, whereby the shape and vibration mode of a piezoelectric module was changed. The basic shape of the piezoelectric module used in this work comprises a width of 10 mm, a length of 30 mm, and a thickness of 0.2 mm. The structural design of the piezoelectric module is optimized using a Taguchi method to increase the corresponding electrical-energy generation. The maximum terminal voltage was defined as a characteristic value to evaluate the optimal design parameters. Through this work, we propose an optimal structure with an eccentric and centric mass; furthermore, the voltage increase of approximately 26% was obtained by comparing a general plate-vibrating piezosystem with an optimal plate-vibrating piezosystem.

  • The bending vibration and thermal flutter instability of spacecraft booms modeled as circular thin-walled beams of closed cross-section and subjected to thermal radiation loading is investigated in this paper. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending-lagwise bending coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. The numerical simulations display deflection time-history as a function of the ply-angle of fibers of the composite materials, damping factor, incident angle of solar heat flux, as well as the boundary of the thermal flutter instability domain. The adaptive control are provided by a system of piezoelectric devices whose sensing and actuating functions are combined and that are bonded or embedded into the host structure.

  • In this paper, a useful die system for warm plate forging of a large axle housing of heavy-duty trucks is presented. A die system composed of material flow guide pin as well as upper die and lower die is proposed to reduce the inherent thickness reduction along the bent corner of the product which deteriorates structural strength and fatigue life in its service. The role of the pin assembled in the upper die is to prevent formation of sharp corner in early forming stage and to supply material in the lower die cavity sufficient enough to thicken the bent corner at the final stroke. The mechanism of the die system is given and its effect on corner thickness of the product is revealed by two-dimensional finite element analysis under plain strain assumption. Three-dimensional finite element solutions are also given to verify validity of the two dimensional approach and to show the mechanics of the die system in detail. The die system has been successfully applied to manufacturing the axle housing of heavy-duty trucks.
