  • Several types of steel structures which are employed in offshore petroleum activities are constructed with tubular members. These structures are usually subjected to various types of loads such as normal functional loads and environmental loads. Furthermore, accidental loads may also act on the leg or bracing members due to supply boat collisions and objects droppings from platform decks. The extent of damage caused by these loads ranges from total collapse of the structure to small damage which may not have serious consequence at the time of accident. To make optimal design decisions regarding structural safety and economical efficiency, it is very important to be able to assess the influence of damages on the performance of damaged structural members. In the End report, a series of calculations is performed to study the effects of different parameters on the load carrying capacity of such damaged members under pure bending. And the results of analysis are compared with experiment results.

  • To correctly estimate ice load and ice resistance for a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering ice strength data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel (IBRV), ARAON, had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during July and August of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to properly obtain sea ice strength data, which provides the basic information on the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and can be used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance on the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from three sea ice field trials during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the ice compressive strength, flexural strength, and failure strain of sea ice. This paper analyzes the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial in January 2010.

  • Thermo-mechanical and flexural behavior of a wire-bond plastic ball grid array (WB-PBGA) are characterized by high sensitive $moir{\acute{e}}$ interferometry. $Moir{\acute{e}}$ fringe patterns are recorded and analyzed at several various bending loads and temperature steps. At the temperature higher that $100^{\circ}C$, the inelastic deformation in solder balls became more dominant. As a result the bending of the molding compound decreased while temperature increased. The strain results show that the solder ball located at the edge of the chip has largest shear strain by the thermal load while the maximum average shear strain by the bending moment occurs in the end solder. The results also show that $moir{\acute{e}}$ interferometry is a powerful and effective tool in experimental studies of electronic packaging.

  • This paper deals with an analytical study on the aileron reversal characteristics of anisotropic composite aircraft wings modelled as thin-walled beam and having bending-torsion structural couplings caused by Circumferentially Asymmetric Stiffness layup scheme. For a study on the aileron reversal of CAS composite wings, it is essential to consider the following effects such as warping restraint, transverse shear flexibility, bending-twist structural coupling, wing aspect ratio, ratio of span-wise and chord-wise length of aileron to wing, and sweep angle, etc. The results on the aileron reversal could have a significant role in more efficient designs of thin-walled composite wing aircraft for which this aeroelastic instability is one of the most critical ones.

  • Many longitudinally-arranged pipes in ships are equipped with loops as a measure to reduce stresses caused by displacement loads conveyed from the hull girder bending and/or thermal loads of carried fluid of non-ambient temperature. But as the loops have some negative effects such as causing extra manufacturing cost and occupying extra space, the number and the dimensions of the loops need to be minimized. In the meanwhile, a design formula for pipe loops has been developed by modeling them as a spring element of which stresses and axial stiffness are calculated based on the beam theory. But as the beam theory turns out to be inappropriate to deal with the complex structural behavior in the curved corner portion of the loop, this paper aims at improving the previously developed design formula by adopting correction factors which can allow for the gap between the results of beam theory and a more accurate analysis. This paper adopts a finite element analysis with two-dimensional shell elements with some validation work for it. The paper ends with a sample application of the proposed formulas showing their accuracy and efficiency.

  • A work on the brittle to ductile transition (BDT) in single crystal alumina has been performed to understand and assess the dynamics of dislocation mobility around crack tip of brittle material. The critical stress intensity factor and yield strengths were obtained from bending test using precracked specimens at elevated temperatures. It was found that the BDT temperature was dependent on strain rate and orientation of specimen : for (1120) fracture surface, $1034^{\circ}C$, $1150^{\circ}C$ for $4.2 \times 10^{-6}$, $4.2 \times 10^{-7}s^{-1}$ respectively. Under a 4 point bending test, the moving distance of dislocation generated near crack front in ductile range is determined by an etch pits method. The velocity of dislocation in sapphire obtained from the double etching method was applied to modelling study.

  • Constructions of coated conductor which is differently from Bi-2223 is comprised multiple coatings on a base material or substrate and designed to achieve the highest degree of alignment possibility of the atoms in the superconductor material. In this study, we are measured and analyzed degradations of critical current according to diameter. In addition to study the effects of bending strain, we observed the AC loss of coated conductor and carried out analytical study for relation between Ic degradation and AC loss as well. The measurement of AC loss and numerical calculation was carried out based on Norris theory to compare with experimental results. The relationship between critical current and AC loss of HTS tapes with partial deformation by mechanical stress was studied. These results will amount the most important basis data in the of HTS cable, magnet, etc that winding work is required.

  • In this study, we evaluated spinal stability based on the change in the thoracolumbar fixation segment using finite element analysis (FEA). To accomplish this, a finite element (FE) model of a normal thoracolumbar spine (T10-L4), including intervertebral discs (IVD), ligaments, and facet joints, was constructed, and the material properties reported in previous studies were implemented. However, L1 was assumed as the lesion site, and three types of posterior fixation, namely, L1-L2, T12-L2, and T12-L1-L2, were implemented in the thoracolumbar FE model. In addition, the loading conditions for flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation were adopted. Through the series FEA, the deformation, equivalent stress, range of motion, and moment on the pedicle screws, vertebrae, and IVD were calculated, and the spinal stability was evaluated based on the FEA results.

  • Fabric extraction force measured through nozzle tester reflects a comprehensive fabric handle. Nozzle tester takes advantage of low cost, and simple and fast operating procedure compared with KES system. The paper is to develop the semi-emprical equation for assessment of the fabric handle measured with nozzle tester on the basis of friction law. The variables considered in the equation arc fabric's frictional coefficient and drape coefficient which is determined in terms of fabric bending length and shear strain. The experiment of 12 different cotton and polyester fabrics and comparisons between experimental and theoretical results were conducted. Fabrics of high frictional coefficients, high bending length, and low shear strain showed high fabric handle forces (low handle values). The handle forces predicted from the equation agreed well with those measured, which indicates that the equation can be used to objectively evaluate fabric handle with respect to fabric's own properties and also provide an information for fabric design to improve the handle performance.

  • Stiffness-gradient stretchable electronic packages of the soft PDMS/hard PDMS/FPCB structure were processed using the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the base substrate and the more stiff flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) as the island substrate. The elastic characteristics of the stretchable packages were estimated and their long-term reliabilities on stretching cycles and bending cycles were characterized. With 0.28 MPa, 1.74 MPa, and 1.85 GPa as the elastic moduli of the soft PDMS, hard PDMS, and FPCB, respectively, the effective elastic modulus of the soft PDMS/hard PDMS/FPCB package was estimated as 0.6 MPa. The resistance of the stretchable packages varied for 2.8~4.3% with stretching cycles ranging at 0~0.3 strain up to 15,000 cycles and for 0.9~1.5% with 15,000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 25 mm.
