Nowadays, the blast method is mainly operated in the fields of the rock excavation accompanied by construction site in Korea. Blast method has many merits such as improvement of workability, reducement of operation period, and etc. However, blast operation also create much loss and troubles with the neighbours for the environmental pollutions such as the noise, blast vibration, fly rocks and dusts. Thus, the non-vibration and shallow vibration methods have been used but they have also another problems in the view of the economy and the efficiency in operation. In this study, we had made laboratory tests for the breaking of the various Rock types by White Light Thermal Stress. The tests shows that one unit consuming 500kilowatts of electricity, would go 90 feet a day in tunneling if the tunnel was 16 feet by 16 feet. Also, if a faster rate of tunneling could be handled, other white light units could be added.

This study aims to investigate an economical efficiency of two excavation methods with respect to the room-and-pillar method for the underground space and conventional excavation method, i.e. 2-arch tunnelling method. For feasibility study, an excavation cost for both room-and-pillar method and 2-arch tunnelling method was estimated when the same space in operation was required. It was assumed that properties of reinforcements and rock were adopted from literatures. However, an excavation shape of the room-and-pillar method was assumed not to be the rectangular shape which is a general type in the room-and-pillar method but to be an arch shape in order to compare with the conventional excavation method (2-arch tunnelling) and to achieve the maximum bearing capacity of the structure during excavation. Consequently, the wider space in use or required and the better condition of rock we assumed, the more economical advantage we have in the room-and-pillar method than the 2-arch tunnelling method.

This paper is the result of the study on the effect of the support structure of the tunnel steel rib. In tunnel excavation, the top and bottom half excavation methods result in subsidence of steel rib reinforcement due to insufficient support of steel rib reinforcement when the ground is poor after excavation. The foundation of the steel rib installed in the upper half excavates the bottom part of the base, causing the subsidence to occur due to various effects such as internal load and lateral pressure. As a result, the tunnel is difficult to maintain and its safety is problematic. To solve these problems, steel rib support structures have been developed. For the purpose of verification, the behavior of the supporting structure is verified by model experiments reduced to shotcrete and steel rib material similarity, the numerical analysis of ΔP and ΔP generated by bottom excavation by Terzaghi theoretical equation. As a result, it was found that the support structure of 20.100~198.423 kN is required for the 10~40 m section of the depth for each soil of weathered soil~soft rock. In addition, as a result of the reduced model experiment, a fixed level of 50% steel rib deposit of steel rib support structure was installed. The study shows that the installation of steel rib support structures will compensate for uncertainties and various problems during construction. It is also thought that the installation of steel rib support structure will have many effects such as stability, economy, and air reduction.
Underground excavation for building construction in Korea is changing from conventional support method (Strut, Ground anchor) to inside permanent support method by stability, economic, circumstances around excavation and etc. This study was selected the sites of Top-down, New Top-down, S.P.S, S.T.D and B.R.D in general use. This study was compared and analyzed a construction cost and period between aforementioned methods and conventional support method. Also, this study was confirmed the stability of temporary retaining wall by analysis for measurement data under construction. As a result, this study can grasp that most improved permanent support method is excellent in economic and constructability than conventional support method in case of deep excavation and rapid appearance of bedrock.

Geotechnial engineering projects that requires excavation activity can cause massive ground deformation and this can damage adjacent structures. Depending on the engineering characteristics of ground material and the excavation depth, the ground movement is various. To overcome this issue, the ground deformation is monitored by multiple sensors. Typically, an inclinometer is installed behind the support wall. In this paper, we present an adaptive duty-cycling control mechanism using wireless sensors for monitoring ground deformation in excavations. The proposed mechanism dynamically adjusts the sleep time based on the urgency degree of sensed data from inclinometer. Through analytical evaluation of expected latency time, we confirm our adaptive duty-cycling mechanism has lower latency compared with periodic duty-cycling mechanism under variable conditions.
This paper intends to introduce more objective and qualitative rock mass classification method easily applicable to the excavation of gneissic masses showing corestone weathering profiles. It is proven that corestone weathering profile could be divided with reasonable accuracy into digging, ripping and blasting layers using visual and simple mechanical techniques such as Schmidt hammer rebound test on cut slopes, taking into consideration strength and spacial distribution of corestone, workability and work efficiency of excavation. Also, seismic refraction surveys were employed for shallow investigations (down to $20{\sim}30m$ depth) in corestone weathering profile and conducted across the top of vertical exposures where the underlying geology could be directly inspected. Some discrepancies ($3{\sim}4m$ in average and 6 m occasionally) between the actual and assumed materials with respect to seismic velocities were observed. Thus it can be concluded that field geotechnical mapping and field seismic test should be used together in order to get a relatively good accuracy in assessing likely excavation conditions of corestone weather-ing profiles.
The Mohr-Coulomb model is mainly used in evaluating the behavior of the ground in numerical analyses of domestic ground excavation. This study analyzes its limitations and compares its numerical results with the hyperbolic model, a model that closely follows actual ground behavior during excavation. Recent applications of the Mohr-Coulomb model in Korea have tended to impose arbitrary special boundary conditions to control the problem of excessive heaving of the ground excavation surface. This adjustment only controls the size of the heaving of the excavation surface, implying that the ground behavior is distorted from the actual behavior. This study compares results from the hyperbolic model (hardening soil model) and the Mohr-Coulomb model, and confirms that the hyperbolic model provides both a more-suitable solution to the problem of heaving during excavation and the actual stress-strain behavior. In numerical analyses of ground excavation, the hyperbolic model is expected to give results consistent with the actual ground behavior.
This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analyses of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover (H) was higher than four times the diameter, can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than that obtained by Ring-cut split method. In addition, the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

Tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements have been investigated by numerical parametric studies considering ground condition, excavation characteristics, and ground layers. Before the numerical study the existing methods of ground movement estimation have been collected and analysed to have some information of ground movements and to improve them providing a fundamental material for the numerical study. Numerical model simulation has been performed of a physical model test of tunnel excavation in which the ground movements were measured reliably and the results have been used to determine the numerical approach and the appropriate soil constitutive mode. With this procedure done, the results of numerical parametric studies have been put together to analyze and understand tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements.
