  • The purpose of the weapon live test during the phase of development is to provide essential information to decision makers that verify and validate the performance capabilities of weapons. Due to varying allocation and high variance of test resources with an increase in the weapon system's capability, the test environment can get highly complex, which can lead to a decrease in the reliability of test results. This issue can be addressed by applying a decision support system that provides various timely information collected by resources during the test process. The decision support system can be designed by applying the concept of digital twins, that are defined as digital replicas of components, systems and processes. This paper describes a design methodology of the decision support system that consists of digital models and service functions using digital twin architecture. A case study illustrates the feasibility of the proposed methodology in supporting the weapon live test process.

  • Flight test systems should monitor various conditions in real time during flight tests and take safety measures in an emergency. The importance of ensuring test safety increases in more complicated and wider test environments. Also, due to the transition of wartime operational authority, many guided missile systems must be developed simultaneously. Early deployment and budget reduction by shortening the development and T&E periods are also necessary. Consequently, the risk of flight tests under the circumstance of inefficient test resources is increasing. To address this deficiency, a flight test system model using SysML was proposed in this study. The method of designing and verifying the test system is based on the agile shift left testing methodology of advanced T&E labs and utilizing a system reference model in the aerospace field. Through modeling and simulation analysis, early identification and correction of faults resulting from inconsistent test requirements can mitigate the risk of delays during the T&E phase of flight tests. Also, because the flight test system model was constructed using SysML, it can be applied to test various guided missile systems.

  • As a cutting edge technology intensive value-added business, the defense industry is jumping into a new engine of a national growth. Also, the defense industry export is recognized not only as the field to activate the Korean economy but also as an important field to create the national brand value. However, though the consensus on the importance of defense industry export helps achieve the remarkable performance in reality, the rate of increase in the budget for national defence is slowing down gradually, and the investment in R&D is not so big, and there are a lot of drawbacks with the management of core technology and the development of cutting edge weapon system. Accordingly, this thesis tried to find the leverage to make the structure of defense industry export work normally after analyzing the systematical structure of defense industry export to understand its characteristics. Also, through the process to make the leverage a strategy, the thesis tried to present the optimal direction of policy to join the ranks of the advanced countries in defense industry export.

  • Recently, there has been demand for the convergence of IT (Information and communication Technologies, ICT) with defense, as has already been achieved in civilian fields such as healthcare and construction. It is expected that completely new and common requirements would emerge from the civilian and military domains and that the shape of war field would change rapidly. Many military scientists forecast that future wars would be network-centric and be based on C4I(Command, Control, Communication & Computer, Intelligence), ISR(Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance), and PGM(Precision Guided Munitions). For realizing the smart defense concept, IT should act as a baseline technology even for simulating a real combat field using virtual reality. In this paper, we propose the concept of IT-based smart defense with a focus on accurate detection in real and cyber wars, effective data communication, automated and unmanned operation, and modeling and simulation.

  • M&S in the field of national defense is a battle system has been highly spotlighted for obtaining weapon systems, analyzing and experimentation of battle effects to reduce costs, time, and risks. It is classified as Campaign, Mission, Engagement, and Engineering levels by detail of description. In engagements, many situations on the battle field which are really unpredictable are required to be considered on the view of diverse tactics. Thus, engagement simulation is in demand to use for forecasting real-world battle situations by inserting various components which consists of real engaging situations into virtual local battle field. While developing the engagement simulation, adopting the concept of agent-based simulation gives it benefits which are improved autonomy, composability, and reusability of entities. It means reducing the time, cost and effort to develop the simulations. This paper concentrates on the framework of multi-agent based engagement simulation using Cougaar Architecture.

  • A performance specification states requirements in terms of the required results, such as performance, environment and interchangeability, but without stating the methods for achieving the required results, such as material and process. therefore the performance specification is applied to attain economic efficiency and high reliability by using the advanced commercial Technology for the weapon systems and The development of performance specification and conversion into performance specification have been activated in the advanced nations. The Ministry of National Defence of Korea has regulated the specification to make performance type in developing specification and prepared performance specification guide. but the result of the development of and conversion into performance specification is very unsatisfactory, To efficiently develop and convert into performance specification, this study gives the way of market research, the creation of the performance specification from development of weapon system and part localization, the process and method for conversion of detail specification into performance specification, the use of hybrid type of performance and detail specification.

  • In this study, a numerical investigation is conducted for the shock deceleration prediction of a conical impactor in gas-gun tests. With the development of weapon systems, gas-gun tests are required to validate the survivability and structural reliability of devices under test (DUT) in high-G shock environments, such as those over ten thousand Gs or more. As shock endurance is highly influenced by various bird parameters, such as mass, velocity, and pressure, it is important to determine the appropriate test conditions to generate a high-G shock environment. However, experimental repetitive studies are inefficient to validate test conditions in terms of economic aspects. Therefore, a numerical technique is required to replace experimental gas-gun tests. Here, a numerical investigation is conducted with ANSYS AUTODYN using explicit code. Through this investigation, the dynamic behavior of DUT is presented. In addition, the results of numerical studies are verified through a comparison with the experimental results of a gas-gun test.

  • A military shelter for communication and information is necessary to optimize the integrated combat ability of weapon systems in the network centric warfare. Therefore, the military shelter is required for EMI shielding performance. This study examines the stable measurement points for EMI shielding effectiveness of a military shelter for communication and information. The measurement points were found by analyzing the EMI shielding effectiveness measurement data with data mining technique and process capability analysis. First, a support vector machine was used to separate the measurement point that has stable EMI shielding effectiveness according to set condition. Second, this process was conducted with process capability analysis. Finally, the results of data mining technique were compared with those of process capability analysis. As a result, 24 measurement points with stable EMI shielding effectiveness were found.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology that can measure the combat effectiveness of attack helicopter which Korea army will be operating in the near future. To measure the combat effectiveness, firstly, we use a wargame model, AAsim (Army Aviation simulation), as a analytic simulation model which is used to analyze DOTMLPF and operation in army aviation field, secondly we use an Analytic Hierarchy Process by opinion of experts. For simulation and AHP, we consider anti armored corps operation reflecting attack helicopter's combat effectiveness. As a result of this study, the combat effectiveness per each attack helicopter can be measured and this combat effectiveness is useful for reasonable decision making such as selection helicopter type, quantity when acquiring new weapon system.
