Oral literature can largely be categorized into myth, legend, and folktales, which are stories orally transmitted from the prehistoric times. The purpose of this study is to compare the discourse on the oral literature of the East and the West from a cultural studies viewpoint by focusing on its "symbolic systems," particularly "figures of speech," or "tropic traits", in order to utilize this oral literature as a resource in the study of Northeast Asian culture. Undergoing modernization, the symbolic meaning of oral literature has been demythologized both in the West and in Northeast Asia. Of course, oral literature, verbally transmitted over a long period of time, has naturally been changed over time and even "contaminated" in a sense by losing its original archaic archetype while it was textualized with letters during the early period of the modernization process. Nevertheless, the principle of "resemblance" and "similarity" between nature/universe and human/humanity, which has been stripped away in modernity, can still be found in oral literature with its mythic power. For this reason, the study of oral literature in the West has attempted to restore the lost magical power within it, particularly in myth. As such, this study delves into the symbolism of the mythic thought of Northeast Asian countries, namely Korea, China, and Japan, which has been lost in the course of their compressed modernization, in relation to the tropic figures of their oral literatures.

21세기를 우주시대라고도 하며 천문우주에 관한 연구는 한 국가의 과학기술력을 상징하는 첨단과학으로 손꼽히는 가운데 현재 세계 각국은 앞 다투어 우주개발과 연구에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 연세대학교 우주광학연구실(지도교수 김석환 교수)이 주목받는 이유는 이곳이 지상 및 우주 광학시스템에 대한 원천기술 개발을 목표로 광학과 공학사이를 연결짓는 중추적인 역할을 담당하고 있기 때문이다.

21세기 글로벌 결핵 퇴치 올림피아드가 있다면, 단연코 이곳을 두고 얘기하지 않을 수 없다. 서울의 상징 남산타워가 올려다보이고, 서울역에서 불과 5분 거리에 위치, 용산 전자상가를 끼고 있는 이곳은 바로 "서울복십자의원 이곳을 거쳐 간 환자 수만 하루 40명 기준 189,800여명. 물론 2000년 이후 결과다. 90년대 당시만 해도 하루 80~90명이 내원할 정도였다. 이 모두가 국가 보건이 상향된 결과이니 안타깝게 여길 필요도 없다. 2013년이 저물어가는 12월을 맞아 편집실은 대한결핵협회가 전국 주요 도시 4곳에 운영 중인 복십자의원 가운데 서울지부 복십자의원을 찾아가 현황을 살펴보고, 2014년 국민 건강을 살펴보고자 한다.

세계 최대의 규모를 자랑하는 자동차 공장, 울산의 상징으로 여겨지는 공장. 바로 현대자동차 울산공장을 수식하는 말들이다. 현대자동차는 아산과 전주 그리고 울산에 공장을 설립해 놓고 있는데, 울산공장은 단연코 세 공장 가운데 핵심기지로 여겨지고 있다. 또 이곳은 37,000여명의 근로자가 일을 하고 있고, 연 440만대의 생산력을 갖추고 있는 만큼 울산은 물론 국가경제를 이끄는 전초기지의 역할을 충실히 수행하고 있다. 이는 곧 화재, 폭발 등의 대형사고가 발생하면 그 여파가 엄청나게 크다는 것을 의미한다. 그만큼 이곳의 안전을 책임지고 있는 안전인들은 남다른 사명감을 갖고 업무에 임하고 있다. 현대자동차 울산공장에서 안전관리 업무를 전담하고 있는 황해철 차장을 만나 어떤 안전관리를 전개하고 있는지 이야기를 나눠봤다.

2010 벤쿠버 올림픽에서 보여준 세계 5위권 우리 선수들의 선전은 국민들에게 벅찬 감동을 심어 주었을 뿐만 아니라 대한민국의 국가 브랜드가치를 높이는 데 커다란 기여를 하였다. 특히 우리가 예상치 못했던 분야인 스피드 스케이팅에서의 금메달 획득은 어떤 분야에서건 목표를 향해 도전하는 자에게 꿈이 현실로 열렬 수 있다는 희망을 상징적으로 보여 주었다. 곧 발사를 앞두고 있는 통신해양기상위성(이하 통해기)의 발사성공은 또 다른 분야인 항공우주분야에서 우리나라 위성개발 역사에서 처음으로 시도되는 정지궤도 위성의 개발성공과 이를 이용한 다양한 분야에서의 활용 시대를 여는 의미 있는 이벤트가 될 것이다 통해기 발사에 즈음하여 현재까지의 위성준비현황을 중심으로 그 동안의 개발과정과 그 개발이 가지는 의미를 되짚어 본다.

This study is conducted to prove a hypothesis that Dokdo Island has "National Landscape Image," being a region with special meaning for Korean people. University students(51 Koreans and 44 foreigners) were surveyed on landscape images of Dokdo Island, and the statistical analysis of the survey responses was performed subsequently. The findings showed no substantial difference between the opinions of Korean men and women: Especially the photo of whole Dokdo was highly rated by Korean respondents as "considerably or very valuable and impressive, but also mysterious and symbolic at the same time." These are unique images of Dokdo Island, which are not found in responses to natural landscape of other national parks. Meanwhile, there were significant contrasts between the responses of Koreans and foreigners in every variables. Some landscape adjectives used as semantic differential scale demonstrate remarkable differences between Korean and foreign respondents, particularly on the photo of whole Dokdo: impressive(1.41), mysterious(1.25), symbolic (1.00), valuable(0.98), intimate(0.95), beautiful(0.93), interesting(0.85). There were substantial differences in responses between Korean and foreigners on two rock islands, which have names related with some national image: The Korean Peninsula Rock(0.57) and Independence Gate Rock(0.51). Finally, three primary factors drawn from the factor analysis were (1) national landscape image, (2) natural characteristics of Dokdo Island, and (3) spatiality of Dokdo Island.

세계무역센터를 대상으로 발생한 9.11.테러 이후 세계 테러 동향은 하드타겟에서 경성타겟으로 점차 변화하고 있다. 경성타겟으로 목표 변화는 테러리스트의 접근성, 대상의 상징성, 미디어 집중성을 고루 갖추고 있어, 테러리스트들의 의사 전달이 용이하기 때문이다. 경성타겟으로 변화와 함께 미디어를 활용한 테러 교육으로 자생테러(외로운 늑대)도 증가하고 있다. 2022년 7월 8일, 일본의 다중이용시설인 나라현 야마토사이다이지 역에서 총기테러 사건이 발생하였다. 야마가미 데스야가 자생테러범은 개조한 사제 총기를 일본 전 총리 아베를 향해 발포하여 과다출혈로 사망에 이르게 하였다. 위 사례는 세계 테러 동향의 변화를 반영한 사건으로, 경성타겟을 목표로 한 자생테러 형태를 보여주고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 다중이용시설 테러 발생 시 우선적으로 고려해야하는 고위험 테러유형을 도출하고자, 우리나라와 국가 경쟁력이 비슷한 G7국가의 다중이용시설을 대상으로 발생한 테러사례를 통계적으로 분석하여 테러유형별 위험도를 도출하였으며, 다중이용시설을 대상으로 자행되는 고위혐 테러유형의 위협을 차단하기 위한 테러안전관리 대책의 개선사항을 제언하고 있다.

본 논문은 1996년 노동법 개정을 둘러싼 노동계의 총파업에 대해 보수적 성향을 갖는 조선일보와 진보적 성향을 갖고 있던 한겨레가 어떠한 방식으로 이러한 쟁점을 재현하고 해석하는 지를 분석했다. 당시의 노동계 총파업은 내부적으로는 민주화에 따른 시민사회의 성숙과 외부적으로는 글로벌라이제이션에 따른 국가 간 경쟁의 가속화라는 두 가지 정치경제학적 요인이 교차하는 공간에서 일어났으며, 동시에 광범위한 국민적 지지를 확보한 파업으로 그 상징적 의미를 갖고 있다. 이와 같이 주요 사회적 쟁점에 대한 두 신문간의 차이를 분석하기 위해 질적 분석 방법인 서사분석(Narrative Analysis)과 양적 분석 방법인 조응분석(Correspondence Analysis)을 사용했다. 서사분석은 사건의 발생과 진행 그리고 결말 과정에서 대립되는 행위자의 상징적 담론을 분석함으로써 사회적 쟁점에 대한 신문사간의 뉴스보도의 차이점 또는 유사성을 구분할 수 있으며, 조응분석은 주요 쟁점에 대해 행위자들이 어떠한 방식으로 서로 연계되는 지를 파악함으로써 역동적으로 총파업에 대한 행위자들의 관계의 변화를 공간적으로 탐색할 수 있는 장점을 갖고 있다. 서사분석 결과, 두 신문은 각각 서로 다른 서사구조를 기반으로 주요 행위자의 담론적 기호를 정반대로 구성하고 있었다. 사건 발생 단계에서는, 두 신문이 각각 국가 경쟁력 강화와 노동전 보호를 중심적인 서사구조로 설정해 차이를 보였으며, 대통령 및 여당과 민주노총이 대립적인 행위자로 설정되었다. 사건의 발전 단계에서는, 총파업의 불법성과 적법성 문제에 대한 갈등을 기본 서사구조로 제시한 채, 노동계를 포함한 시민사회와 정부기관이 대립적인 행위자로 등장했다. 사건의 갈등 해소 단계에서는 문제 해결을 위한 방법으로 두 신문이 대통령과 야당 지도자간의 정치적 해결과 노동법 통과에 대한 위헌론 제기를 중심으로 한 노동단체들의 지속적인 연대를 중심 서사구조로 각각 제시했다. 이 시기에서 주요 행위자들의 대립관계는 종료되었다. 조응분석 결과, 사건 발생과 위기 고조 단계, 그리고 갈등 해소 단계등 모든 시기에서 두 신문의 주요 행위자 구성에 있어서 차이가 나타났다. 다시 말해, 조선일보는 기본적으로 총파업을 둘러싼 문제의 구성과 발전, 해소 과정에서 정당이나 대통령, 야당 지도자 등과 같은 정치관련 행위자를 강조하고 있었다. 반면에, 한겨레는 대체로 로든 사건진행 단계에서 노동 관련 단체들과 시민단체의 역동적인 연대와 활동에 초점을 맞추고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Using the official marker of the Korea's national symbol to inform the world of the country's existence to the global community in the $21^{st}$century enhances the autonomy and the competitiveness of Korea. It is thought that selecting a motif for promoting the national identity through cultural products or costumes can prepare an opportunity for gaining competitiveness internationally. The purpose of this study is to enhance understanding on the use of a traditional Korean symbol, Mugunghwa, and how it increases the cultural value of Korea, and develops the modern Korean image. The specific contents of this study are as follow. First, searching for the scope of usage of the national flower Mugunghwa from various angles for enhancing the Korean image. Second, developing a national symbol image of modern sense that reflects trend by using Mugunghwa. Third, clarifying the application scope and role of the national symbol image using Mugunghwa, and present a specific usage plan for creating more value. As for the study method, the study is conducted through theoretical and empirical research and six pieces of work of modern Mugunghwa image are presented as the result. Based on the development of the image of Mugunghwa as a national symbol, this study proposed a role of a cultural ambassador by applying Mugunghwa to fashion products or costumes. As for the expected effect, it can provide an opportunity for developing another national symbol and a new perspective on national symbol will appear. It is thought that the cultural value of a national symbol can be understood through this study and it can provide an opportunity for developing various national symbols for enhancing the national image.
