This study presents a 3-dimensional flow-structure interaction analysis of subsea risers in water flows. Two structural connectors (flat and circular couplers) were intentionally devised and numerically tested using ANSYS CFX to investigate how these couplers behave under the water flows. In the flow analysis, the water field was constructed with an inlet, outlet, and symmetric boundary conditions. As a result, the responses (drag coefficients and pressure fields) were obtained and the pressure fields were applied for the structural analysis. Finally, the structural responses (displacements and equivalent stresses) of the risers were measured to demonstrate the efficiency of the riser connectors.

In this study, several Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) analyses were performed using the developed FE-BE coupling method and the seismic response behavior of the structure's systems was determined. For the verification of the fundamental solution which is used in this analysis method, a dynamic analysis of the homogeneous ground was performed and it was compared to the results of Estorff et al. In order to verify the seismic response analysis, the results are compared with those of another commercial code. Several kindd of SSI analyses were performed and the seismic response associated with the rile foundation, seismic waves and a consideration of the ground nonlinearity were determined. As a result, it was found that the pile foundations didn't greatly helpful during the seismic event.

The gas explosions in offshore installations are known to be very severe according to its geometry and environmental conditions such as leak locations and wind directions, and a dynamic response of structures due to blast loads depends on the load profile. Therefore, a parametric study has to be conducted to investigate the effects of the dynamic response of structural members subjected to various types of load shapes. To do so, a series of CFD analyses was performed using a full-scale FPSO topside model including detail parts of pipes and equipments, and the time history data of the blast loads at monitor points and panels were obtained by the analyses. In this paper, we focus on a structural dynamic response subjected to blast loads changing the magnitude of positive/negative phase pressure and time duration. From the results of linear/nonlinear transient analyses using single degree of freedom(SDOF) and multi-degree-of freedom(MDOF) systems, it was observed that dynamic responses of structures were significantly influenced by the magnitude of positive and negative phase pressures and negative time duration.

Considering fluid-structure-soil interactions, a finite-element model for a liquid-storage tank is presented and the nonlinear earthquake response analysis is formulated. The tank structure is modeled considering shell elements with geometric and material nonlinearities. The fluid is represented by acoustic elements and combined with the structure using interface elements. To consider the soil-structure interactions, the near- and far-field regions of soil are modeled with solid elements and perfectly matched discrete layers, respectively. This approach is applied to the seismic fragility analysis of a 200,000 kL liquid-storage tank. The fragility curve is observed to be influenced by the amplification and filtering of rock outcrop motions at the site when the soil-structure interactions are considered.

Spot welding is the primary method of joining sheet metals in the automotive industry. As automobiles are subjected to fatigue loading, some spot welds may fracture before the whole system has failed. This local fracture of spot welds may lead to change in the dynamic response and consequently affect fatigue behavior of an automobile. Therefore, this change in dynamic response should be taken into consideration to assess the fatigue life of structures subjected to spectrum loading, such as automobiles. In this study, vibration fatigue analysis was performed by taking into consideration the change in the dynamic response due to accumulated damage at spot-welded parts. Fatigue tests were carried out on tensile-shear spot-welded specimens under constant amplitude loading condition. And the fatigue life of spot welds under spectrum loading was predicted using vibration fatigue analysis method based on finite element analysis.
Europe, the US and Japan have acquired test results on impact coefficient for a long time and applied it to equipment design to secure safety of structures. However, Korean enterprises use the impact factor held by advanced business to design equipment as it is difficult for them to obtain it through tests. In this paper, NX/NASTRAN, was used to perform static load analysis and impact load analysis of a PCB Handler, semiconductor test equipment, and the result was employed to study how to calculate the impact coefficient with the finite element analysis. The calculation method was applied to the JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard), and the impact coefficient of the PCB handler was calculated as 1.27 for the sudden start or stop. The impact coefficient generated by the analysis is expected to make a great contribution to the industry as it can be used to improve the equipment structure and develop on existing equipment in the future.

Seismic design and analysis of nuclear power plant components are performed based on an decoupled model. However, this decoupled analysis has a limitation in that it generates inaccurate results compared to the coupled analysis because it cannot simulate actual phenomena such as the interaction between structures and components. Thus, this study performed seismic coupled and decoupled analysis on an existing nuclear containment structure and related components, considering the mass and natural frequency ratios. And based on these results, comparative analyses of responses of components were conducted. Consequently, the seismic coupled analysis result generally gave a smaller value than the decoupled analysis result. These results were similar to the analysis results for the simple coupled model, which was an existing study, but the difference in component responses was much more pronounced. Also, this was influenced by the installation location of the component rather than the influence of the input frequency of the input seismic motions. Finally, the difference between the decoupled and coupled seismic analysis occurred in the region where the mass ratio of the components was large, and the natural frequencies were almost similar due to the considerable dynamic interaction between the structure and the component in this realm.

In order to analytically evaluate buffeting responses, the analysis of wind characteristics such as turbulence intensity, turbulence length, gust, roughness coefficient, etc must be a priority. Static aerodynamic force coefficients, flutter coefficients, structural damping ratios, aerodynamic damping ratios and natural frequencies affect the analytical responses. The bridge interested in this paper has being been used for 32 years. As the time passes, current terrain conditions around the bridge are different markedly from the conditions it was built 32 years ago. Also, wind environments were considerably varied by the climate change. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the turbulence intensity, length, spectrum and roughness coefficient of the bridge site from full-scale measurements using the structural health monitoring system. The evaluation results indicate that wind characteristics of bridge site is analogous to that of open terrain although the bridge is located on the coastal area. To calculate buffeting responses, the analysis variables such as damping ratios, static aerodynamic force coefficients and natural frequency were evaluated from measured data. The analysis was performed with regard to 4 cases. The evaluated variables from measured data are applied to the first and second analysis cases. And the other analysis cases were performed based on Design Guidelines for Steel Cable Supported Bridges. The calculated responses of each analysis cases are compared with the buffeting response measured at less than 25m/s wind speed. It is verified that the responses by the numerical analysis applying the estimated variables based on full-scale measurements are well agreed with the measured actual buffeting responses under wind speed 25m/s. Also, the extreme wind speed corresponding to a recurrence interval 200 years is derived from Gumbel distribution. The derived wind speed for return period of 200 years is 45m/s. Therefore the buffeting responses at wind speed 45m/s is determined by the analysis applying the estimated variables.

Despite the highly sophisticated development of finite element analysis, a finite element model for structural dynamic analysis can be inaccurate or even incorrect due to the difficulties of correct modelling, uncertainties on the finite element input data and geometrical oversimplification, while the modal data extracted from measurement are supposed to be correct, even though incomplete. The assumption that the test results represent the true dynamic behaviour of the structure, however, may not be correct because of various measurement errors. The measurement errors are investigated and their effects on estimated frequency response functions(FRFs) are also investigated.
