  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of ultra-high strength concrete columns with 100 MPa compressive strength for the requirement of ACI provisions. Eight 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the cross section $300{\times}300mm$ and the aspect ratio 4. The main variables are axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. Consequently, to secure the ductile behavior of 100 MPa ultra-high strength concrete columns, ACI provisions for the requirement of transverse steel may considered axial load level and the details of transverse reinforcement.

  • Microcement grouting and micro pile are frequently used for ground modification during tunnel construction. The influence of grouting pressure of microcement grouting and micro pile to the existing bridge which is directly over the constructing tunnel is investigated. Three dimensional seepage flow-structure interactive analysis considering firm water pressure with full stages of construction including the construction of upper bridge, microcement grouting, micro pile and tunnel is performed. The settlement and tilting of the pier of existing bridge violate the design code and the reaction of the bridge are highly increased after grouting. The stress of tunnel bracings such as rockbolt and shotcrete also exceed the limit of the code. The pressure of microcement grouting is confined by bedrock and transmit to the surrounded soil and the upper bridge. Microcement grouting needs mid-high pressure to penetrate through weak fault plane and the pressure greatly influence the safety of the upper structure. It is important to decide and care the grouting pressure to improve weak fault plane directly under the existing structures and the pressure of microcement grouting should be considered in underground analysis.

  • Analysis via classical soil mechanics theory is either ineffective or inappropriate for fully describing stress distribution or failure conditions in cold regions, since mechanical properties of soils in cold regions are different from those reported in the classical soil mechanics theory. Therefore, collecting and analyzing technical data, and systematic and specialized research for cold regions are required for design and construction of the structure in cold regions. Freezing and thawing repeat in active layer of permafrost region, and a loading condition affecting the structure changes. Therefore, the reliable analysis of mechanical properties of frozen soils according to various conditions is prerequisite for design and construction of the structure in cold regions, since mechanical properties of frozen soils are sensitive to temperature condition, water content, grain size, relative density, and loading rate. In this research, the direct shear apparatus which operates at 30 degrees below zero and large-scaled low temperature chamber are used for evaluating shear strength characteristics of frozen soils. Weathered granite soil is used to analyzed the shear strength characteristics with varying freezing temperature condition, vertical confining pressure, relative density, and water content. This research shows that the shear strength of weathered granite soil is sensitively affected by various conditions such as freezing temperature conditions, normal stresses, relative densities, and water contents.

  • We fabricated 1$\times$8 array of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well infrared photodetectors for the long wavelength infrared detection which is based on the bound-continuum intersubband transition, and characterized its electrical and optical properties. The device was grown on SI-GaAs(100) by the molecular beam epitaxy and consisted of 25 period of 40 ${\AA} $ GaAs well and 500 ${\AA} $ $Al_{0.28} Ga_{0.72}$ As barrier. To reduce the possibility of interface states only the center 20 ${\AA} $ of the well was doped with Si ($N_D=2{\times}10^{18} cm^{-3}$). We etched the sample to make square mesas of 200$\times$200 $\mu\textrm{m}^2$ and made an ohmic contact on each pixel with Au/Ge. Current-voltage characteristics and photoresponse spectrum of each detector reveal that the array was highly uniform and stable. The spectral responsivity and the detectivity $D^*$ were measured to be 180,260 V/W and $4.9{\times}10^9cm\sqrt{Hz}/W$ respectively at the peak wavelength of $\lambda$ =7.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and at T=10 K.

  • In this study, the effect of different silt contents on the shear characteristics of silty sands was evaluated. Two series of triaxial compression tests were performed on the cylindrical specimens of compacted Nakdong river sand with 10% and 30% silt contents under unconsolidated undrained condition. All identical specimens were prepared to compact with same initial water content for five layers and saturated using control panel and then sheared under initial effective confining pressure, 100 to 400kPa. All specimens exhibited a strain softening tendency after failure in stress-strain curves and deviator stresses of specimens with 10% silt content were greater than those of specimens with 30% silt content. Pore water pressures of specimens with 10% silt content were observed negative(i.e. swelling) due to increasing void ratio after failure but those of specimens with 30% silt content were shown only positive. The behavior of compacted cylindrical specimens with low silt content was more dilative than that of high silt content. Peak deviator stresses decreased as increasing silt content and peak pore water pressures increased as increasing silt content.

  • Steel elevator pit was developed for the purpose of minimizing the excavation, simplifying the construction of the frame and economical efficiency by improving the problems that occurred in the existing reinforced concrete. It is common to apply conventional RC method through excavation to underground structures such as underground floor collector well and elevator pit. In recent years, the use of steel collector well and steel elevator pits to reduce construction costs by minimizing the materials of steel and concrete has been continuously increasing. The steel elevator pit is an underground structure and then the performance of the welding part and the structure system is important. Specimen with only steel plate and concrete without studs could support the load more than 3 times than the specimen with deck only. Therefore, even if there is no stud, the deck (steel plate) rib is formed and the effect of restraining the steel plate and the concrete during the bending action can be expected. However, since sudden fracture in the elevator pit may occur, stud bolt arrangement is necessary for the composite effect of steel plate and concrete. It is expected that the bending strength can be expected to increase by about 15% or more depending with and without stud bolts.

  • This study was based on the steel composite concrete box structure (Transfer girder) which was installed to support the skyscrapers directly above the subway line. In this study, it was analytically proved that the cause of cracks on the steel composite concrete box structure were the shrinkage cracks by comparing the results of crack investigation and numerical analysis. As the results, it was found that the internal temperature difference between concrete and steel members occurred according to the shape of the steel frame embedded in concrete, the location of vertical stiffener, and the closed section area. The narrower spacing of vertical stiffener was occurred the internal temperature concentration of the structure and the temperature difference increased. And the location of higher thermal strain and temperature were similar to the location of actual cracks by the visual inspection. Therefore, the internal temperature concentration parts were formed according to the presence and spacing of the vertical stiffeners and the inspection passage in the central part of the structure. The shrinkage cracks were occurred by the restrained of temperature expansion and contraction of the concrete. As the results of this study, it was important to separate and manage the non-structural cracks caused by shrinkage and the structural cracks in the maintenance of serviced steel-composite concrete structures.

  • This paper shows that there are the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of single pipe pile which is subjected to lateral load in, Nak-dong River sand. The purpose of the present paper is to estimate the effect of Non-homogeneity. constraint condition of pile head, lateral load velocity, relative density, and embedded length of pile on the behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. Also, these are compared with the results of the numerical methods (p-y method, modified Vlasov method; new ${\gamma}$ parameter, Characteristic Load Method'CLM). In this study, a new ${\gamma}$ parameter equation based on the Vlasov method was developed to calculate the modulus of subgrade reaction (E. : nhz.) proportional to the depth. The p-y method of analysis is characterized by nonlinear behavior. and is an effective method of designing deep foundations subjected to lateral loads. The new method, which is called the characteristic load method (CLM). is simpler than p-y analysis. but its results closely approximates p-y analysis results. The method uses dimensional analysis to characterize the nonlinear behavior of laterally loaded piles with respect to be relationships among dimensionless variables. The modulus of subgrade reaction used in p-y analysis and modified Vlasov method obtained from back analysis using direct shear test (DST) results. The coefficients obtained from DST and the modified ones used for the prediction of lateral behavior of ultimate soil reaction range from 0.014 to 0.05. and from 0.2 to 0.4 respectively. It is shown that the predicted numerical results by the new method (CLM), p-y analysis, and modified Vlasov method (new parameter) agree well with measured results as the relative density increases. Also, the characteristic load method established applicability on the Q-Mnu. relationship below y/D=0.2.

  • The joints in the jointed concrete pavement provide a control against transverse or longitudinal cracking at slab, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation during or after hydration. Without control of cracking, random cracks cause more serious distresses and result in structural or functional failure of pavement system. However, joints nay cause distresses due to its inherent weakness in structural integrity. Thus, the evaluation at joint is very important. and the joint-related distresses should be evaluated reasonably for economic rehabilitation. The purpose of this paper was to develop an evaluation system at joints of jointed concrete pavement using finite element analysis program, ILLI-SLAB, and nondestructive testing device. FWD. To develop an evaluation system for JCP, a sensitivity analysis was performed using ILLI-SLAB program with a selected variables which might affect fairly to on the performance of transverse joints. The most significant variables were selected from precise analysis. An evaluation charts were made for jointed concrete pavement by adopting the field FWD data. It was concluded that the variables which most significantly affect to pavement deflections are the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G), and limiting criteria on the performance of joints at JCP are 300pci. 500,000 lb/in. respectively. Using these variables and FWD test, a charts of load transfer ratio versus surface deflection at joints were made in order to evaluate the performance of JCP. Practically, Chungbu highway was evaluated by these evaluation charts and FWD field data for jointed concrete pavement. For Chungbu highway, only one joint showed smaller value than limiting criterion of the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G). The rest joints showed larger values than limiting criteria of the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G).

  • In this study, in-situ testing method, Dynamic Cone Penetration Test(DCPT) was presented to establish a new compaction control criteria with using mechanical property like elastic modulus instead of unit weight for field compaction control. Soil chamber tests and in-situ tests were carried out to confirm DCPT tests can predict the designed elastic modulus after field compaction, and correlation analysis among the DCPT, CBR and resilient modulus of sub grade were performed. Also, DCPT test spacing criteria in the construction site was proposed from the literature review. In the result of laboratory tests, Livneh's equation was the best in correlation between PR of DCPT and CBR, George and Pradesh's equation was the best in the predicted resilient modulus. In the resilient modulus using FWD, Gudishala's equation estimates little larger than predicted resilient modulus and Chen's equation estimates little smaller. And KICT's equation estimates the modulus smaller than predicted resilient modulus. But using the results of laboratory resilient modulus tests considering the deviatoric and confining stress from the moving vehicle, the KICT's equation was the best. In the results of In-situ DCPT tests, the variation of PR can occur according to size distribution of penetrate points. So DCPT test spacing was proposed to reduce the difference of PR. Also it was shows that average PR was different according to subgrade materials although the subgrade was satisfied the degree of compaction. Especially large sized materials show smaller PR, and it is also found that field water contents have influence a lot of degree of compaction but a little on the average PR of the DCPT tests.
