  • Linear motion (LM) ball guides with rolling contact are core units of feed-drive systems. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, the friction force induced from LM ball guides generates heat, which deteriorates positioning accuracy and incurs changes of stiffness and preload. To accurately analyze the effects and apply the results to precision machine design, mathematical modeling of the friction force is required. In this paper, accurate formulation of the friction force due to rolling, viscous, and slip frictions is conducted for LM ball guides. To verify the reliability of the developed friction model, experiments are performed under various assembly, load and velocity conditions. Effects of frictional components are analyzed through the formulated friction model.

  • On a typical railway, trains travel using the friction between the wheel and the rail. Contact pressure is generated between the wheel and the rail, and the magnitude of the contact pressure changes depending on the weight, speed, wheel-set hunting, and contact point of the vehicle. In this study, the contact characteristics were analyzed through the finite element analysis for the wheel/rail system on curved track, and fatigue damage and wear rate of wheel/rail according to contact pressure were analyzed through rolling contact fatigue test. Results indicate that, general and heat treated rails showed higher wear rate than wheels, and general and heat treated rail wear rate increased rapidly over a certain number of repetitions. In addition, the general rail wear rate was about 7 ~ 15% higher than that of the heat treated rail, and a regression equation for the rail wear rate with the contact pressure in the contact pressure range of 900 ~ 1,500 MPa was presented.

  • With developing the next generation high speed railway, there need to be plans to make sure of running safety though researchs on the crack and break of rail by rolling contact fatigue. Therefore, this study performed the parametric analysis effecting on the fatigue life of rail using simplified equations. It analyzed the internal stress of rail according to the track quality, train velocity, wheel radius, track stiffness, sleeper space, wheel load. For the more, via the finite element method, it analyzed shear force on the rail head which could be changed by the early length of crack, angle of crack and temperature. As a result, this study continued the main parameter effecting on the fatigue life of rail.

  • This study focuses on the design of a mechanical joint for a zero moment crane (ZMC), which is a specialized loading/unloading system used in a mobile harbor (MH). The mechanical joint is based on the concept of zero moment point (ZMP), and it plays an important role in stabilizing a ZMC. For effective stabilization, it is necessary to ensure that the mechanical joint is robust to a wide variety of loads; further, the joint must allow the structures connected to it to perform rotational motion with two degrees of freedom By adopting a traditional design process, we designed a new mechanical joint; in this design, a universal joint is coupled with a spherical joint, and then, deformable rolling elements are incorporated. The rolling elements facilitate load distribution and help in decreasing power loss during loading/unloading. Because of the complexity of the proposed system, Kriging-based approximate optimization method is used for enhancing the optimization efficiency. In order to validate the design of the proposed mechanical joint, a structural analysis is performed, and a small-scale prototype is built.

  • Acoustic Emission (AE) technique is a non-destructive testing method and widely used for the early detection of faults in rotating machines in these days, because the sensitivity of AE transducers is higher than normal accelerometers. So it can detect low energy vibration signals. The faults in the rotating machines are generally occurred at bearings and gearboxes which are the principal parts of the machines. It was studied to detect the bearing faults by envelop analysis in several decade years. And the researches showed that AE had a possibility of the application in condition monitoring system(CMS) using the envelope analysis for the rolling bearing. And peak ratio (PR) was developed for expression of the bearing condition in condition monitoring system using AE. Noise level is needed to reduce to take exact PR value because the PR is calculated from total root mean square (RMS) and the harmonics peak levels of the defect frequencies of the bearing. Therefore, in this paper, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was added in the envelope analysis to reduce the noise level in the AE signals. And then, the PR was calculated and compared with general envelope analysis result and the result of envelope analysis added the DWT. In the experiment result about inner fault of bearing, defect frequency was difficult to find about only envelop analysis. But it's easy to find defect frequency after wavelet transform. Therefore, Envelop analysis added wavelet transform was useful method for early detection of default in signal process.

  • This research is a thing about reverse operation about the solar power for location decision and increasing efficiency of the solar power generation equipments. The purpose of this research is reverse operation about the amount of sunshine using the climate and spatial elements. Following the result of correlation analysis, the wind-speed and cloud-amount factor are excluded, because the correlation and significance coefficients are out of value. Each outcome of regression analysis using the other four climate elements, and regression analysis using spatial elements is what the amount of sunshine and the solar altitude are the most influence to the insolation-modeling. Doing the regression analysis based on the precedent result make the result that climate elements have bigger coefficient of regression than spatial elements. This outcome means the climate elements are more influence than spatial elements.

  • To establish a monthly data collection planning for the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI), we have examined the global patterns of three impacting factors: pigment concentration, cloud cover, and sun glint. Other than satellite mission constraints (e.g., duty cycle), these three factors are considered critical for the OSMI data collection. The Nimbus-7 Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) monthly mean products and the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) monthly mean products (C2) were used for the analysis of pigment concentration and cloud cover distributions, respectively. And the monthly-simulated patterns of sun glint were produced by performing the OSMI orbit prediction and the calculation of sun glint radiances at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA). Using monthly statistics (mean and/or standard deviation) of each factor in the above for a given 10$^{\circ}$ latitude by 10$^{\circ}$ longitude grid, we generated the priority map for each month. The priority maps of three factors for each month were subsequently superimposed to visualize the impact of three factors in all. The initial results illustrated that a large part of oceans in the summer hemisphere was classified into the low priority regions because of seasonal changes of clouds and sun illumination. Sensitivity tests for different sets of classifications were performed and demonstrated the seasonal effects of clouds and sun glint to be robust.

  • Wheel-rail noise is normally classified into three catagories : rolling impact and squeal noise. In this paper rolling noise caused by the irregularity between a wheel and a rail is analysed as follows: The irregularity between the wheel and the rail is assumed as linear superposition of sinusoidal profiles. Wheel-rail contact stiffness is linearized by using Hertzian contact theory and then contact force between the wheel and the rail is calculated. vibration of the rail and the wheel is calculated theoretically by receptance method or FEM depending on the geometry of the wheel or the rail for the frequency range of 100-500 Hz important for noise generation. The radiation noise caused by those vibration response is computed by BEM To verify this analysis tools rolling noise is calculated by proposed analysis steps using typical roughness data and these results are compared with experimental rolling noise data. This analysis tools show reasonable results and finally used for the prediction of the Korean high speed train rolling noise.
