The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation of oral health behavior, oral health state and PHP in an effort to facilitate the promotion of oral health and improve oral health care. The subjects in this study were patients who got a scaling at the oral hygiene practice lab in the department of dental hygiene in S college dental clinic from September 5 to December 1, 2007. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The younger patients had a smaller number of FT index, and the older patients excelled the younger ones in oral health behavior involving the use of oral hygiene supplies, regular visit to dental clinics and dietary control. 2. The patients got 2.62 out of possible five points on oral health behavior, which indicated that their oral health behavior wasn't good enough. Those whose oral health behavior was better had a smaller number of DT index and a larger number of FT index. A better oral health behavior led to a lower PHP index. 3. There was a negative(-) interrelationship between oral health behavior and DT index, and oral health behavior had a positive(+) correlation with FT index. The oral health behavior had a negative(-) correlation to PHP index, which showed that a better oral health behavior led to a lower PHP index. The above-mentioned findings seem to suggest that oral health behavior is one of integral factors to affect oral health status and PHP index, and the kind of oral health education that could change oral health care attitude should be provided during scaling practice after grasping the actual oral health behavior of patients.

This study attempted to identify the possibility of natural herbal extracts as an alternative, preventive agent of caries by comparing antimicrobial activities between natural herbal extracts and mouth rinsing solutions against Streptococcus mutans. Natural herbal plants were extracted with distilled water and ethanol, respectively, to measure the minimum growth inhibitory concentration of S. mutans depending on concentration, and among which, solvents showing high antimicrobial activity were selected to compare their antibiotic effects with those of mouth rinsing solutions. Also, to determine the concentration of natural medicinal herbs that can be used safely in the oral cavity, the extracts were treated to the normal gingival fibroblast cells depending on concentration in order to determine its cytotoxicity using MTT. In terms of the minimum growth inhibition concentration, the growth inhibition of S. mutans was more excellent in the ethanol extract than in the distilled water. When the minimum growth inhibition concentration was compared, Psoralea corylifolia of natural herbal ethanol extracts, and Hexamedine (Bukwang Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions inhibited growth of S. mutans at the lowest concentration. When the minimum bactericidal concentration was compared, P. corylifolia of natural herbal extracts, and Hexamedine and Garglin (Dong-A Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions eliminated S. mutans at a low concentration. The human gingival fibroblast was treated with natural herbal ethanol extracts at the minimum growth inhibition concentration of 10, 39, and $78{\mu}g/ml$. As the result, no cytotoxicity was found. When this was treated at different minimum bactericidal concentrations, natural herbal ethanol extracts showed cytotoxicity except P. corylifolia.
Trisodium phosphate 12 hydrate and citric acid monohydrate mixture showed the strong anti-sticking effect on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus salivarius, which are adhered to glass beads. Each Streptococcus species was shaking-cultured in brain heart infusion broth containing three glass beads. After 18 hr, glass beads were slightly washed into normal saline by three-pin-pointed pincette. Each three glass-beads set was put into reagent -containing tubes, which have 40 mg of bits of weighing paper for gaining brushing effect as similar as brushing one's teeth. The tubes were shaken by vortex mixer for 10 min except non-oral microbe, Streptococcus agalactiae (5 min). The samples were colony-counted by serial agar dilution method. Experiment was repeated three times for each Streptococcus species. The relative ratios of bacterial de-adherence by reagents were calculated in comparison with normal saline control. The de-adherence degree of citric acid-trisodium phosphate-saline mixture (CTS, pH 6.0) against Streptococcus mutans came to an average of 12.5 times compared with normal saline control. Trisodium-saline (TS, pH 8.4) showed the average of 7.5 times, and citric acid-saline (CS, pH 4.6) showed 6.0 times compared to the control group. The bacterial de-adherence degree against Streptococcus salivarius was each 7.2,2.6 and 2.8 times in above reagent sequence in comparison with saline control. CTS and TS showed 2.4 and 3.4 times of anti-sticking effect on Streptococcus mitis respectively, but CS had no anti-sticking effect on this bacterium. CTS, TS and CS showed 0.7, 0.6, and 0.6 times on non-oral microbe, Streptococcus agalactiae, separately compared with saline control. These results show that oral Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, and Streptococcus mitis, which are causative of dental caries or subacute endocarditis, may be easily removed from oral cavity by CTS mixture. It is conceivable that our experimental results will enable the development of a new conceptive toothpaste to prevent dental caries or subacute endocarditis after drawing teeth.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to verify the oral environmental change in using the natural oral cleaner containing propolis and prevention effect of oral disease. Methods: The subjects were 60 university students in Gangwon province. The groups consisted of 30 students of experimental group and 30 students of control group. The subjects were those who did not take the antipsychotic, diuretic, antihistamine, and anesthetic. The students rinsed their mouth with propolis mixture of oral cleanser for 4 weeks after receiving informed consent from October 1 to November 2, 2012. Collected saliva was measured for amount, salivary consistency, pH, plague index, gingival index, and halitosis. Results: The amount of salivary in propolis mixture of oral cleansing group remarkably increased (t=2.16, p<0.05). pH was alkaline in the group with oral cleaner containing the propolis (t=2.80, p<0.01). The bad breath remarkably decreased in the group with oral cleaner containing the propolis (t=-5.77, p<0.001). Conclusions: The use of the oral cleaner containing the propolis increased the amount of salivary and pH. The use of oral cleaner containing the propolis reduces halitosis and maintains good quality of oral hygiene.
The author thought that the results of cytologic tests could be changed according to the fixative methods. So the author has studied several methods of fixing exfolaiative cells collected from normal adult cheek mucosa with a solution of equal parts of ether and 95% ethylalcohol, 95 ethylalcohol and Isoprophyl alcohol, and compared the results with each other. The results were as follows : The effects of fixation, and staining efficiency of nucleus and protoplasm are similar in each method, but the staining efficiency of cytoplasm and the conversation of cytoplasmic membrane were best in 95% ethylalcohol.
This study is designed to present basic materials necessary for offering the more effective way of dental hygienists, or those who are in charge of the education of Oral health, the treatment and prevention of dental problems, educating Oral health by stage by dint of determining the actual condition of the knowledge and management of dental hygiene, or prevention of the basic dental disease except the professional methods of dental management and evaluating their abilities to manage dental hygienes. In terms of the real conditions of the management of dental hygienes, the majority of the subjects said, "not bad" or "healthy". Most of them (62.1%) said that they brush their teeth three times a day, and most of them (85.2%) depend on rolling methods. 69.2% of them used brushes that are neither hard nor soft, and 28.4% of them use soft brushes and 49.7% of them brush their teeth for about 3 minutes. In terms of brushing time, 27.8% of them brush their teeth after lunch, while 23.8% of them brush their teeth after breakfast. 66.3% of them use fluoric tooth pastes while 19.5 percent of them said, "I have no idea." and 14.2% of them said, "No." In terms of complementary dental hygiene goods, dental goggles are used by 23% of them, and dental threads are used by 78.1% and tooth brushes are used by 78.1% of them, and 42.4% of the subjects use the instruments one to twice a day, and 53.8% of them use them for less than one minute a time. Gargle solution has typically been used for the prevention of oral infectious disease such as dental caries and periodontitis. However, the use of most gargle solutions is controversial in application for children because some gargle solutions have harmful side effects. Electrolyzed water is generated by passed an electric current and has antimicrobial activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of electrolyzed water in various conditions for eliminating cariogenic bacteria. Electrolyzed water was generated by a platinum electrode in the presence of sodium chloride at various concentrations. Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus were cultivated into a brain heart infusion broth. After harvesting planktonic bacteria, the pellets were treated with the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions and plated on a mitis-salivarius agar plate. Also, the anti-biofilm activity of the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions was investigated after biofilm formation of S. mutans and S. sobrinus. The bacteria in the biofilm were plated onto a mitis-salivarius agar plate. The plates were incubated, and the colony forming unit was measured. The electrolyzed water containing sodium chloride showed significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans and S. sobrinus as well as some gargle solutions. Furthermore, the electrolyzed water had more disruptive effect on the biofilm of S. mutans and S. sobrinus and killed more bacteria in the biofilm than commercial gargle solutions. The results demonstrate that electrolyzed water may be a useful gargle solution for prevention of dental caries.
