Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of mothers education attainment on prevalence of dental caries among their preschool children. Methods: Data were obtained from the third 2006 Korea National Oral Health Survey. A total of 515 preschool children aged 2 to 7 years and their mothers were selected in this study. We used mother's education level as her socioeconomic position and controlled children's tooth brushing frequency, tooth brushing before bed, the frequency of eating snack, and the preventive dental visit. Whether children experienced dental caries or not and the number of decayed or filled or missing tooth surface they had were used as outcome variables. Results: The proportion of children affected with dental caries was 46.21%. The mother's education level affected children's caries significantly (p<0.05) and children whose mother attended less than high school had more possibility of having caries than children whose mother graduated from college or more (p<0.05). This effect was still significant and got larger(p<0.05), even after controlling children's dental health behavior. Conclusion: This study showed that mother's education level affected the prevalence of caries among their preschool children. In addition, this result indicated a need for more definite policy for children's dental health in lower socioeconomic class with general dental education.

Excluding 14 preschoolers who did not appear in the 2nd survey, we performed the study with 56 preschoolers and drew conclusions as follows. 1. The number of decayed or missed or filled teeth among deciduous teeth was 3 or more in 42.9% of female children, and 46.4% of male children, so male children showed a slightly higher rate. 2. The degree of dental plaque formation was $1.64{\pm}1.22$ among the surveyed children. 3. The oral health index was lower after TBI than before in all the children (P<.001). 4. Change in the oral health index was particularly larger in 7 year old female children (p<.005). 5. The patient hygiene performance index was lower after TBI than before in both the buccal surface and lingual surface of the children (p<.005). 6. The contents of the questionnaire for mothers were also general characteristics, dental health behaviors, and dental health beliefs. The result of this study were as follows 1. The prevalence of dental caries was 65.0% and there was no significant difference between urban and rural areas. 2. Meanwhile, 63.8% of students in urban areas knew the examination result through a doctor's explanation, 52.4% of students in rural areas learned through a school notification letter, 82.9% of all the students let their parents know of their dental caries. 3. Overall, the scores in the dental health beliefs in mothers were low. Especially among the 5 items of susceptibility and seriousness, the scored were very low but the benefit was high. Logistic regression analysis showed that the treatment of a child's dental caries was significantly associated with low scores of benefit in those untreated and high scores among those treated. Considering these results, health education to stimalate a mother's susceptibility and seriousness in health beliefs and for students to learn the need for treatment, including a more detailed post exam management system at the school level should be considered for a higher treatment rate.
