  • Neutron room scattering corrections that should be made when neutron detectors are calibrated with a $D_2O$ moderated $^{252}Cf$ neutron source in the center of a calibration room are considered. Such room scattering corrections are dependent on specific neutron source type, detector type, calibration distance, and calibration room configuration. Room scattering corrections for the responses of a thermoluminescence dosimeter and two different types of spherical detectors to neutron source in the Radiation Calibration Laboratory(RCL) neutron calibration facility at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) were experimentally determined and are presented. The measured room scattering results are then compared with theoretical results calculated by predicting room scattering effects in terms of parameters related to the specific configuration. Agreement between measured and calculated scattering correction is generally about 10% for three kinds of detectors in the calibration facility.

  • In the surface contamination test using the end-window Geiger-Muller type counter, the wrap is used as a method for protecting the detector exposed to the outside in order to measure the beta-rays. We analyze the effect of this method on the measurement rate and the correction factor, and wanted to make it clear to radiation workers that excessive use of the wrap can affect the measured value of the beta-rays. The experimental method was to compare and analyze the change of the beta-rays measurement counting rate and the calibration factor according to the wrap thickness using the beta-rays with different energy of 3 KBq, 1.5 KBq and 0.3 KBq. The subjects of this study were the end-window Geiger-Muller type counter which were held at the calibration center certified by Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) in March 2012, Cl-36 (Chlorine) and Sr-90 (Strontium) were used as the source of beta radiation. The measurement counting rate decreased with increasing wrap thickness, and the calibration factor increased with increasing wrap thickness. Since the changes of the measurement counting rate and the calibration factors can reduce the accuracy of the instrument readings, but also have a significant impact on detector contamination and damage, so there is a need to find out what thickness of wrap is most effective. If we using a wraps with thickness that show a low rate of change of the measurement counting rate and the calibration factor, it will protect the detector and minimize the effect on the measured value of the beta-rays.

  • Form the pure Maxwellian distribution(kT= 1.42MeV), the effects upon calibration factors of encapsulating a $^{252}Cf$ spontaneous fission neutron source were investigated to establish a standard neutron field in the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI). A Monte Carlo code MCNP was used in simulating the encapsulation SR-Cf-100 and SR-Cf-1273 to be real conditions. The anisotropy(FI) and fluence-to-dose equivalents conversion factors$(H/{\Phi})$ were evaluated and compared with other results. As the results, the FI was determined to be 1.061 at ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$ with ${\pm}0.2%$ statistical error and the $(H/{\Phi})$ was evaluated to be $333.9 [pSv\;cm^2]\;with\;{\pm}0.5%$ statistical error, which is lower by 1.8% than that recommended by the ISO 8529. This means physically that the neutron spectrum of the unmoderated $^{252}Cf$ source in KAERI is a little more softened than that by the ISO.

  • As the number of patients suffering from Pes Planus increases, research on a correctional insole that can cope with them is increasingly required. Therefore, the design of an insole for Pes Planus Correction was studied using the superelastic effect, which is one of the characteristics of the shape memory alloy in this paper. To design an effective insole, the effect of the contact pressure induced by the insole on the plantar fascia, which is the most important muscle in the foot structure, was evaluated. Three parameters (thickness, max. height and asymmetric ratio) were set as the main design factors of the insole, and the maximum contact pressure appearing on the plantar fascia was calculated by finite element analysis and analyzed using the Taguchi method. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the contact pressure was influenced in the order of max. height, thickness, and asymmetric ratio. In addition, the contact pressure was converted to a feeling pressure that could be felt by a person, and then a safety correction range was established that would not cause any irritation to the plantar fascias, even though the correction effect could be expected. This indicates the best design for the safety correction range. The design method considering the important factors established through this study can form the basis for designing a personalized correctional insole in the future.

  • The thermistor mount is used for precise RF power measurement because the calibration factor is constant according to the change of power. The calibration factor of the standard mount can be measured with an uncertainty less than 0.5 % from the 10 MHz to 1 GHz by direct comparison with the transfer standard using the DC substitution method. Recently, as the supply of precision power meter based on DC substitution method allows simple and fast measurement, a simple direct comparison measurement system with the same level uncertainty was designed and the minimum required specifications of components through analysis of mismatch error was proposed. The uncertainty was evaluated for system validation, and the results show that uncertainties have been well maintained within 0.5 % in the measurement frequencies.
