  • The purpose of this study was to perform research on the development of core course textbooks in the LIS field. The process of textbook development proposed in this study can also be a useful reference for developing the textbooks for other, non-core courses. The textbook development procedure used was as follows; 1) investigating and analyzing the main textbooks of LIS core courses domestically and abroad, 2) deriving optimal curriculum content from job analysis results, 3) gathering comment and feedback from professors teaching core courses, 4) proposing a final, three-tiered table of contents for an optimal textbook. The textbook table of contents proposed as a result of this research relates to the core subjects of: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Services, Library Management, Information Organization, Information Retrieval, and Library Fieldwork. We suggested chapter and section levels for all subjects, and list all of the details that should be dealt with in each section; instructors are then able to select from these options at their discretion.

The textbook was developed through the steps of analysis of guidelines for making easy-to-read materials, confirmation of the course, development of textbook contents, and verification of validity. The final developed materials were developed as textbooks, including reader classification, vocabulary, symbols, layout, and production practice for the development of easy-to-read materials with a total of 7 sessions. The important characteristics of the textbook developed in this study are: First, it classified readers who read easy-to-read materials for the first time in Korea and introduced them as Plain Language readers and Easy to Read readers. Second, the guideline that can be referenced while developing easy-to-read materials was developed as a checklist, so that it can be checked by itself. Third, thematic activity sheets and workbooks were developed so that they can be used as activity-oriented textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply the algorithm teaching materials centered on plays(ATMCP) to improve problem-solving abilities of elementary students. For this goal, the ATMCP were reviewed by the expert group and tested them out on 71 fifth-grade elementary students in Daegu, Korea during the 6 weeks. We divided students into two groups: one is the group of the ATMCP and the other is the group of conventional algorithm teaching materials(ATM). And we analyzed the change of the problem-solving ability of each group between before and after using two types of teaching materials with the Mixed ANOVA. The result showed that there was a significant difference in students' problem-solving abilities between before and after using them and the group of the ATMCP was greater improvement than the group of the conventional ATM in a problem-solving ability.

  • The present study aims to investigate how teachers evaluate the Korean textbook they use for teaching primary students with multicultural background. Faced with the rich variety of materials available, it is often a challenging task for language teachers to select the most suitable coursebook. It is required that they carry out a detailed and comprehensive analysis of coursebooks and evaluate them with a set of criteria to guide the process. 32 Korean teachers took part in the primary KSL textbook evaluation that aimed to identify improvement areas. They used a pro-forma specified with 51 criteria. The teachers' responses to the questions in the pro-forma were statistically analyzed to draw implications for material evaluation. The findings of the analysis suggest that the KSL textbook for primary multicultural students need to be improved at the internal and external levels. Implications are discussed with focus on material evaluation and development, and KSL teacher professional development by helping them gain good and useful insights into the nature of the textbook, and sensitizing them to features to look for in teaching and learning materials.
