  • This study examined differences among high, medium, and low achievers' motivation, self-regulation strategy, and learning style in an online gifted program. The sample included 788 middle and high school students who participated in the 3-months online gifted program. Participants volunteerly completed 60 questions on their motivation, self-regulation strategy use, and learning style. Multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) was conducted for data analysis using SPSS 19.0. The results of this study showed that (1) as levels of students' achievement increased, levels of intrinsic motivation increased as well; (2) statistically significant differences also existed on the levels of elaboration strategy, effort management, and time management strategy use among three levels of achievement and (3) no significant differences in students' learning style preference were found between competitive or cooperative learning style. To sum up, high achieving students' levels of intrinsic motivation, elaboration strategy, effort management strategy, and time management strategy use were the highest compared to medium and low achieving students.

Result from LPA revealed five distinct types of learning motivation profiles fit the data best, and these five profiles are compared with students' entrepreneurial intentions and types of entrepreneurship. Results showed that Profiles (profile 5 and 4-high goal orientation) are associated with the higher level of entrepreneurial intention. Regarding the type of entrepreneurship, the majority of all students are interested in individual and co-entrepreneurship with friend regardless of the patterns of profiles.

  • This case study aimed to investigate changes in adolescents' awareness of the motivation behind their excessive internet gaming after group music psychotherapy. Five middle school students participated in six 60-minute group sessions over 4 weeks. The group music psychotherapy program was developed to help participants understand their implicit reasons for excessive internet gaming. Verbal responses were obtained from pre-program and post-program interviews and original lyrics created by participants during program were collected for analysis. Obtained data were analyzed in terms of emotional and cognitive aspects in relation to the participants' awareness of the motivation behind their excessive gaming. The results showed that song writing as creative musical process allowed participants to be aware of positive and negative influence of gaming on themselves and express their motivation to change their perception on gaming behavior. Also, the participants reported that the use of musical product for their daily lives could be an effective coping strategy to manage their gaming behaviors and an alternative for gaming. The findings from this study support that group music psychotherapy can be an effective approach to promote awareness of adolescents' motives for excessive internet gaming and to help adolescents better manage their gaming behaviors.

  • The Natural Science High School is specialized in vocational education or training related to natural sciences such as biology or chemistry. Therefore, natural science high school students are expected to possess a high level of science learning motivation. This study aims to explore natural science high school students' level and structure of science learning motivation by comparing students in general high school. One hundred ninety three students from a natural science high school and 208 from a general high school participated in this study. We administered a questionnaire that consisted of seven science motivation components: 1) career motivation; 2) science grade motivation; 3) understanding the relevance of scientific knowledge; 4) need for learning science; 5) self-determination; 6) self-efficacy; and 7) attitudes toward science class. We employed independent t-test, path analysis, bivariate correlation, and stepwise multiple-regression for the statistical analyses. Our findings illustrated that the natural science high school students' levels on all seven variables were significantly lower than the general high school students.' The path analysis illustrated that career motivation and science grade motivation had relatively stronger influence on self-determination and self-efficacy in the natural science high school student sample than in the general high student sample. The explanatory powers of four independent variables (career motivation, science grade motivation, understanding the relevance of scientific knowledge, and need for learning science) predicting self-determination and self-efficacy were 30% higher in the natural science high school student sample than in the general science high student sample. These results suggested that natural science high school students' science learning motivation may be easier to change by extrinsic motivations such as career and science grade motivation.

  • Much research has been conducted in educational robot, a new instructional technology, for K- 12 education. Several studies have shown that educational robot provides effective learning opportunities for students in both content areas of STEM(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and critical academic skills, such as collaboration, problem solving and communication skills. However, most studies to date on applications of educational robots have been conducted outside the formal education setting. This study analyzed the influence of using robots in an elementary school science class in Korea with regard to science learning motivation. A total of 121 students in fourth and fifth grades participated in the study. The experimental group was taught using robots in the science class, while the control group was taught using traditional methods. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to compare the between-group differences in learning motivation before and after the experiment; an interview was also conducted for the experimental group. The study results showed a significant improvement (p<.05) in both learning motivation in the experimental compared with the control group. There was also positive response to learning with a robot. This study will play an important role in research on the use of educational robot in formal education in the future.

  • This study empirically analyzes the impact of digital divide between digital device usage motivation and operational skills on online political participation. The analysis was performed using the National Information Society Agency's 2018 digital divide survey data from September to December 2018 and applying the Heckman selection model to control the sample selection bias that may occur between internet users and non-users. The result shows the gap in motivation and device operational skills of individual citizens using digital devices has significant impact on online political participation. In socio-economic terms, it shows the age, education level and regional factors also have significant impact on online political participation, while gender and income levels do not. This study holds significance in that there are different patterns of digital divide between digital devices, identifying the motivation to use a digital device as an important factor for mobile device users, and the device operational skills, for personal computer users.

  • This study examined how the learning styles and emotions of 234 students enrolled in early childhood education-related departments affected their ability to participate in the learning community. The research collected the variables of the pre-service early childhood teachers' ability to participate in the learning community, the emotions that they experienced while learning, and their learning styles. The collected data were analyzed through correlation analysis and regression analysis. The results indicate that the students' ability to participate in the learning community was positively correlated with the following: their analytical learning attitude (among learning styles); learning motivation; degree of preference for discussion and discussion types; positive and negative emotions, which are subcategories of learning emotion; and the degree of preference for experimentation and their practice type among teaching methods. Second, regression analysis showed that the students' ability to participate in the learning community could be predicted by negative emotion as a subcategory of their learning emotion, learning motivation, degree of preference for the experiment and practice type, their analytical learning attitude, and the degree to which students value studying the content of their major subjects.
