  • This study attempts to understand the context of shared learning in the trading zone formed by teachers from different backgrounds and the process in which this shared learning varies in the educational context, focusing on the case of 'Woodwork Science Education Study Group.' To do this, data was collected through in-depth interviews with eight teachers who participated in the 'Woodworking Science Education Research Group' and analyzed their responses based on grounded theory. As a result, the causal conditions of the teachers' research group were 'various contexts of entering the trading zone' and the central phenomenon was 'encounter with learning in the trading zone.' Contextual conditions affecting this phenomenon were 'woodwork as a boundary object and individual transfiguration experience,' and action/interaction strategy was 'various efforts and influences in the field.' The intervention condition was 'practical effort and experience in educational field.' Final result in this model is 'the new practice of learning shared in the trading zone.' In selective coating, it was found that the practice of the teacher's research group appears as four types of' 'Extracurricular creative experience type,' 'career education type,' 'curricula education type,' and 'school management type.' The results of this study suggest that the shared learning and antonymous practice among teachers in the teachers' research group as trading zone do not only meet their learning needs but also lead to various teaching practices in the individual teachers' context of education and improve the diversity and quality of education.

  • There are complex interactions between personal and contextual features in teaching in a science museum. In order to analyze two teachers' holding classes in a science museum, the CHAT (cultural historical activity theory) was used as an analysis tool in a case study. The analyses of the results revealed that both teachers had difficulties teaching in a science museum due to the contradictions among the factors of subject, rules, community, and division of labor in the activity system. Although both teachers had trouble with similar contradictions, there appeared to be different sets of internalization and externalization of such conflicts depending on the difference in the teacher's perceptions and experiences about teaching in a science museum, the passion and the motivation of the teachers. These suggested that efforts should be preceded to foster the activity system providing both emotional and social supports to teachers in order to activate teaching in a science museum. Taking a teacher training course on teaching in a science museum was also found to fail to function as mediating artifacts. The course should provide not only the experience of executing proper teaching strategies for teaching in a science museum and the feedback on their teaching, but also the guidance on how to lead to optimal expansion of the factors in the activity system.

  • The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted, interrupted, and changed the way we normally prepare our teacher candidates in teacher preparation programs. In this paper, we, two mathematics teacher educators (MTEs), reflect our own experiences in appropriating, transforming, reconstructing, and modifying our pedagogies of teacher education in making a transition from face-to-face to online environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a collaborative self-study, we discussed issues, challenges, changes, opportunities, and innovations of teaching an elementary mathematics methods course in the online environment. Using a constant comparison method, we explored the following three themes: (1) using virtual manipulatives; (2) creating collaborative, interactive, and shared learning experiences for preservice teachers; and (3) making preservice teachers engaged in student thinking. These findings indicated that online teaching requires transformative knowledge for teacher educators. Transferring face-to-face to online is not a simple matter of putting the existing content to online; it should focus on pedagogical improvement in teaching mathematics rather than technology's sake or how it can be repurposed in a new online environment in a way that students' learning is optimized. The findings of this study provide implications for unpacking MTEs' technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), creating collaborative learning experiences for preservice teachers, and designing a collaborative self-study between MTEs engaged in the community of professional learning.

  • This article presents a one and half-year process of Lesson Study conducted at a K-8 school in an urban district in the eastern U.S. Lesson Study, a Japanese form of professional development that centers on collaborative study of live classroom lessons, has spread rapidly in the U.S. since 1999 and has been argued as a promising alternative model for teacher-led school reform through professional development. The Lesson Study group described here was composed of five teachers, one administrator, and one instructional improvement coordinator belonging to the participant school and two instructional super-intendants from the school district. Data was collected from October 2007 to February 2009 and a qualitative case study method was employed for this study. Drawing a case of Lesson Study, this article intended to show how Lesson Study group members participated in planning, teaching, observing, discussing, and improving lessons collaboratively for student learning by enhancing teacher professional competence so that find directions for future implementation in Korea. This article investigates (1) process of Lesson Study, (2) issues Lesson Study group members mainly dealt with, and (3) changes have taken place in Lesson Study as it is conducted over time. (4) Finally, this article concludes with challenges to adopting Lesson Study successfully in Korea.

  • Despite the significance of mathematics teacher guidebooks as a support for teacher learning, there are few studies that address how elementary mathematics teacher guidebooks support teacher learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze the educative features of elementary mathematics teacher guidebooks for grades 3 and 4. For this, six units from each of ten kinds of teacher guidebooks were analyzed in terms of seven dimensions of Teacher Learning Opportunities in Korean Mathematics Curriculum Materials (TLO-KMath). The results of this study showed that mathematics content knowledge for teaching was richly provided and well organized. Teacher guidebooks provided teacher knowledge to anticipate and understand student errors and misconceptions, but were not enough. Sample dialogues between a teacher and students were offered in the teacher guidebooks, making it easier for teachers to identify the overall lesson flow and key points of classroom discourse. Formative assessment was emphasized in the teacher guidebooks, including lesson-specific student responses and their concomitant feedback examples per main activity. Supplementary activities and worksheets were provided, but it lacked rationales for differentiated instruction in mathematics. Teacher knowledge of manipulative materials and technology use in mathematics was provided only in specific units and was generally insufficient. Teacher knowledge in building a mathematical community was mainly provided in terms of mathematical competency, mathematical classroom culture, and motivation. This paper finally presented implications for improving teacher guidebooks to actively support teacher learning.

  • There were a lot of challenges to reform mathematics education. These challenges may include reforms of teaching and learning methods, development of mathematics curriculum and textbooks, innovative resources for teaching mathematics. Although there is considerable consensus that meeting these challenges will require that mathematics teachers have deep insights about mathematics, about students as learners of mathematics, and about teaching method, the teachers themselves may have little knowledge of them. The most of the professional development includes elective participation in reeducation course, workshop, and special lectures which designed to transmit a specific set of ideas, techniques, or materials to teachers. But such approaches treat mathematics teaching as routine and technical, and also provide limited opportunities for meaningful interactions within the teaching community. So, this paper suggests that what is needed to develop professional teachers of mathematics is community where teachers work with colleagues rather than working alone.

  • The purposes of this study are to develop a measuring instrument for the analysis of science classroom culture from the perspective of Community of Practice (CoP) and to confirm its feasibility. We set the structural factors of CoP and developed preliminary questions through literature review. The validity and reliability of the instrument were examined and modified through the pilot survey participated by a total of 219, 4th, 6th, and 8th grade students. The modified instrument consisted of 5 factors of 'responsibility for learning', 'common interest', 'mutual relationships', 'open participation', and 'practice', comprising a total of 27 items. As the main survey, confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis of the instrument were carried out with a total 706 students of the 4th and 6th grade. This measuring instrument was validated and used for analyzing the culture of science classroom CoP of elementary school by comparing the data from the main survey in terms of structural factors, grade, gender, and teacher type. The measuring instrument is expected to be used not only for analyzing science classroom culture from the perspective of CoP, but also for offering implications for the desirable science classroom culture.
