To this end, the study analyzes their participation in expertise development activities over the recent three years, outcomes from these activities, and forms and characteristics of expertise development activities. In the questionnaire survey conducted for this study, 276 primary school teachers participated. According to the survey, the same largest proportion of them participated in collective job training (96%) and distant job training (96%), followed by consulting, instruction supervision, mentoring, and peer observation (82%), lectures, workshops, and seminars held by related government ministries and the provincial and municipal offices of education (69%), and teachers' study communities (66%). Among informal activities, reading accounted for the highest portion of the activities (88%), followed by the use of information on Websites including YouTude and GitHub (80%), and teachers' expertise development networks (76%). The reasons for their participation in the activities were mostly to improve their instructional expertise (80%). Their participation in the activities had an impact on usefulness to enhance instructional expertise, improvement of job competencies, application to current jobs, sense of instructional efficacy, and positive effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a framework for progression in the professional development and learning of secondary science teachers' teaching practice. The progression in the professional development was modified Pilhee Woo's framework(2010), and in the learning was developed by the researchers. The former included 6 elements and 36 aspects. The progression of each aspect was composed of five level criteria. The content validity is 96.4% and the reliability is .96. The latter was composed of another five level criteria. The content validity is 96.0% and the reliability is .95. Internet-online test and the questionnaire were administered to 203 secondary science teachers who were selected by convenience sampling. The mean level of the progression in the professional development and learning were 2.21 and 2.95. ANOVA, t-test and correlation analysis were conducted to compare differences by the characteristics of teachers. The level of the progression in the professional development and learning was significant difference according to almost all of teachers' characteristics. The level of the progression in the professional development was significantly correlated with the level of the progression in the learning.

  • Teachers' ability to notice is a crucial indicator of their instructional expertise. Despite the significance of this ability, research in mathematics teacher education has predominantly focused on the noticing of preservice teachers, with limited exploration into the noticing abilities of experienced in-service teachers. This study addresses this gap by examining the noticing characteristics of in-service elementary teachers actively developing their competency in elementary mathematics education. For this purpose, 23 elementary school teachers were asked to complete an analysis sheet while viewing the mathematics lesson video depicting on the concept of (fraction)÷(natural number), allowing us to scrutinize their attending, interpreting, and responding skills in detail. The study's results revealed that teachers demonstrated a tendency to attend mathematically significant aspects related to the teaching of fraction division. They interpreted the observed phenomena through the lens of fraction division's instructional principles, proposing specific pedagogical alternatives. These findings offer valuable insights for mathematics teacher education research.

  • This case study focused on three science teachers who participated in the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program conducted by the Center for Bridging Advanced Science and Education (CBASE). The RET program provides opportunities for participants to experience experimentations in a science laboratory for six months, enabling teachers develop teaching materials based on their experience from the RET program. The purpose of this study was to explore how the teachers had developed their professionalism through participation in the program and which factors promoted the professional development of science teachers. In this research, we defined pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) as the required knowledge for teachers to develop for their professional development. As a result of the RET program, all three participants showed integration of PCK elements: orientation to teaching science, knowledge of science, knowledge of students, knowledge of teaching, and knowledge of sources. The PCK elements which had been developed by the RET program were applied in school context and the teachers' belief became clear and strong. The teachers were able to understand the process of authentic science as they learned it from 'legitimate peripheral participation' in the authentic research context. They also showed dynamic integration between newly established elements of PCK by reflecting on the school context while developing the teaching materials. The professional development of each teacher was different depending on the purpose and PCK, which participants had already possess. This study will provide meaningful implication for the development of professional development program for science teachers based on research experience.
