A Study of the Proper Control-Interval through Comparative Analysis on Bridge Maintenance System (교량 적정 점검 주기에 관한 비교 연구)

  • Bridge Control and Inspection ensures the safety, utility, and durability of Bridge in use. This Paper compares Control-interval of Germany with that of Korea, which was described in the special law recently revised concerning the Safety Checkup of Facilities, and analyzes Period of Damage Discovery that the Damage report of other countries showed. According to a result of the analysis, damage requiring structure repair and reinforcement more frequently been discovered even in less than a decade after the completion of construction. The paper, therefore, suggested the reregulation on the Korean Control Interval on the basis of the result.

Development of maintenance cost estimation method considering bridge performance changes (교량 성능변화를 고려한 유지관리비용 추계분석 방법 개발)

  • To prepare for the explosive increase in maintenance costs of bridges according to the aging of infrastructure, future maintenance costs of bridges should be predicted. For this purpose, the management status of bridges was investigated and modeled as the upper limit of the performance level and the target management level according to the life cycle. This paper proposes methodologies and procedures for estimating the bridge maintenance costs using two models and existing cost and performance prediction models that consist of unit repair cost model according to the safety score, performance degradation model of bridges, unit reconstruction cost, and average reconstruction time. To verify the applicability, future maintenance costs can be forecasted for specific management agency considering the number of bridges, degree of aging, and current management status. As a result, it is possible to obtain the maintenance cost and safety level of an individual bridge level for each year. In addition, by summing them up to the agency level, the average safety score, ratio of the safety level, inspection costs, repair costs, and reconstruction costs can be obtained. In a further study, the changes in maintenance costs can be analyzed according to the changes in the target management levels using the developed method. The optimal management level can be suggested by reviewing the results.

  • In this paper, the preventive maintenance strategy in operation stage of a bridge using Bayesian inference is proposed. The proposed technique can be used to predict the variation in the performance (or condition) of the bridge with higher accuracy, considering the uncertainty of monitoring. The applicability of the proposed method to the existing bridges is verified and analyzed that have an advantage in terms of maintenance cost efficiency compared to the conventional periodic maintenance system, which establishes maintenance after damage. It is expected that the proposed preventive maintenance method can be used to overcome the limitation of the conventional periodic maintenance method and to make practical bridge maintenance decision.

  • According to continuous welded rails on a bridge, temperature changes bring about the expansion of the bridge deck,adding axial forces on the track. Moreover, the ballast on the bridge deck expansion joint is moved due to the bridge deck. The longer the bridge deck is, the greater the influence will be, loosening the ballast, causing track irregularities, and deteriorating passenger comfort. Considering the structure of the bridge itself and tolerance for track irregularities caused by the loosened ballast on the bridge, the maximum length of the deck should be less than 80 m, which is the same as the standard of French railways. In this study, the interaction between the expansion related to the bridge length and the irregularity in the longitudinal level, referring to measurements and maintenance work performed in high-speed railways, was analyzed. This research shows that the installation of a sliding plate or a vertical ballast stopper is not a good option, since it is difficult. On the other hand, the installation of a ZLR fastener or gluing is easy, but its influence is insignificant. Bridge Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Preventive Maintenance (예방적 유지관리를 통한 교량의 생애주기비용 절감 효과 분석)

  • The paper aims at evaluating effects of preventive maintenance on life cycle cost(LCC) reduction of bridges. The preventive maintenance activities capable to delay bridge deteriorations can reduce overall maintenance costs and extend service life of a bridge by regularly providing maintenance activities and avoiding larger maintenance(repairs or rehabilitations) costs. Couple of prediction models were proposed in order to calculate LCC of a typical bridge: a health score model and repair rehabilitation cost model. In addition, the maintenance activities such as wash and painting were also suggested in order to consider effects of preventive maintenance in the analysis based on literature reviews. According to analysis results, new maintenance strategy(reactive maintenance + preventive maintenance) can save \0.5 billion per bridge for future life-cycle costs over 100 year analysis or \184 billion for entire HBMS(Highway Bridge Management System) inventory over 20 years. Small investments for preventive maintenance in improved bridge management can have a very significant return when considering the large bridge inventory.

  • 본 기사는 교량의 이음부(joint) 설계를 위한 새로운 구조적 퓨즈 개념을 다루고 있다. 제안하는 개념은 경제성, 명확한 하중경로, 그리고 지진 후 보수의 용이성 등을 포함한 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있다. 기본적인 아이디어는 평상시의 사용 상태에서는 탄성거동을 할 수 있을 정도로 강하지만 동시에 주요 지진이 발생하였을 때는 파괴될 수 있을 정도로 약한 구조적 퓨즈를 설계하여 지진에너지가 퓨즈를 통과하지 못하도록 하겠다는 것이다. 두 가지의 대표적인 프로젝트를 소개하여 구조적 퓨즈의 개념이 실무에 어떻게 성공적으로 적용될 수 있었는지 보이고자 한다.

  • 증강현실은 가상세계와 현실세계를 혼합한 기술로, 현재 여러 분야에서 증강현실을 접목한 다양한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 건설 산업은 복잡한 설계와 시설물을 기반으로 모든 업무가 행해지는 특징으로 인해 증강현실의 활용 가능성이 높은 분야로 주목되고 있다. 스마트폰을 이용하여 교량의 정보를 제공하는 증강현실 기반 교량 정보 시스템(InfoBridge)은 사용자들에게 많은 정보를 제공하기 위해서 최적화된 데이터베이스 모델링이 필요하다. 많은 사용자들이 원하는 정보를 찾을 때 정보의 누락이 없어야 하고 빠른 검색을 통해서 정보를 제공 받아야 한다. 또한 관리자는 사용자가 원하는 정보를 정확하게 제공하기 위해서 데이터베이스의 최신화가 필수이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 증강현실 기반 교량 정보 시스템의 데이터베이스 설계를 제안한다. 우리나라에 있는 많은 교량들의 내/외적인 정보를 데이터베이스에 담기 위해서는 적절한 설계가 필요하며 이러한 설계를 통해서 정보의 빠른 검색, 데이터베이스의 효과적인 유지보수를 제공한다.

Proposal of Maintenance Scenario and Feasibility Analysis of Bridge Inspection using Bayesian Approach (베이지안 기법을 이용한 교량 점검 타당성 분석 및 유지관리 시나리오 제안)

  • In order to establish an efficient bridge maintenance strategy, the future performance of a bridge must be estimated by considering the current performance, which allows more rational way of decision-making in the prediction model with higher accuracy. However, personnel-based existing maintenance may result in enormous maintenance costs since it is difficult for a bridge administrator to estimate the bridge performance exactly at a targeting management level, thereby disrupting a rational decision making for bridge maintenance. Therefore, in this work, we developed a representative performance prediction model for each bridge element considering uncertainty using domestic bridge inspection data, and proposed a bayesian updating method that can apply the developed model to actual maintenance bridge with higher accuracy. Also, the feasibility analysis based on calculation of maintenance cost for monitoring maintenance scenario case is performed to propose advantages of the Bayesian-updating-driven preventive maintenance in terms of the cost efficiency in contrast to the conventional periodic maintenance.

  • Service life of bridges should be evaluated by physical life considering damage/deterioration. But it is difficult to identify optimal maintenance scenario due to insufficient research related to that. To identify optimal maintenance scenario, it is needed to develope life cycle profile model of condition state variation by deterioration factor. The LCP model has been developed in consideration of regression analysis and survey in this study. It is expected that the LCP model could help to achieve HBMS system improvement.
