  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends of mathematics textbooks to provide implications for future textbook research. For this purpose, 123 research papers related to mathematics textbooks, published in seven professional domestic journals during recent five years, were selected. The papers dealing with Korean mathematics textbooks were analyzed by school levels (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school), mathematics content areas, analytic methods, and implications. The results of this study showed that many studies analyzed elementary mathematics textbooks, specifically in the content strand of number and operations. The frequent analytic foci were given to content areas along with mathematical rigor or the development of alternative mathematics textbooks. In comparison with the previous research trend, there was an increasing number of studies in which detailed implications or ways of re-constructing mathematical topics were discussed on the basis of thorough analysis of textbooks. This study also included an analysis of papers comparing Korean mathematics textbooks with foreign counterparts or analyzing foreign mathematics textbooks to elicit implications for Korean mathematics textbooks in terms of reasons of the comparison, school levels, and analytic foci. This paper closes with implications for textbook research.

  • This paper analyzed 'Education with Robots' of the Practical Arts unit among the six textbooks developed under the 2015 revised curriculum, and provided implications for selection of textbooks, researching curriculum, and developing the next textbook. As a result of analyzing the prior study, it was found that the inquiry analysis was insufficient in the elementary school 'Education with Robots' unit. On the contrary, in the middle and high school textbooks research were sufficient. Therefore, we analyzed the contents of the textbook using the Romey analysis method, judging that our children who will live in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution need an inquiry type textbook. As a result of analyzing textbooks, there was no ideal textbook with an inquisitive disposition in all analysis elements, and in all textbooks, the analysis element with the lowest inquiry disposition was the text, and the highest analysis element was activity.

  • Singaporean students have demonstrated their superior mathematical achievement and positive mathematical dispositions. Against this background, this study compared Korean elementary mathematics textbooks with Singaporean counterparts focusing on the geometry and measurement strand. The analysis was conducted in many aspects, including an overall unit structure, the contents to be covered in each grade, and the methods of introducing essential learning themes. The textbooks were also compared and contrasted with regard to the main characteristics of constructing mathematical contents. Whereas Korean textbooks used block teaming, Singaporean textbooks used repeated teaming. The latter also employed the activity of classifying multiple figures as the main method of introducing concepts. Whereas Korean textbooks consist of typical examples of figures, Singaporean counterparts include various examples consistent with the principle of mathematical variability.

  • This study aims to understand the trends and characteristics of elementary science textbook research. For this purpose, among the papers published in science-related journals from 2001 to 2021, 156 studies related to elementary science textbooks were analyzed to examine the research trends on textbook analysis. The analysis criteria consisted of two major categories, 'outward feature' and 'topic.' The subcategories of 'outward feature' consist of 'year of publication,' 'target curriculum,' 'target grade,' 'science content area,' 'subject of study,' and 'publishing institution.' The sub-categories of 'topic' consist of 'comparison,' 'content,' 'illustration,' 'inquiry activity,' 'perception of textbooks,' and 'others.' As a result of the analysis on 'outer feature,' textbook-related research was conducted almost every year, and the research on the 2009 revised science curriculum, on the 3-6 grades, and on the whole field of science had the most. The science textbook researches were published not only in science education-related journals but also in other areas' journals. As a result of the analysis of the 'topic,' the number of papers was higher in the order of comparative research, content analysis, illustration, inquiry activities, and perception of textbooks. Implications for accredited textbook system of elementary science were discussed based on the analyses on the elementary science textbook research trends.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of units about ratio and rate between Korean mathematics textbooks and MIC of America. With bases to this, I would find the problems and suggested point of curriculums about ratio and rate in order to propose the basic materials of developing mathematic curriculum and textbook and improving the mathematic teaching method. With bases to this, Korean mathematics textbooks should be supplemented as follows. A. Develop the various problems with meaningful situation rather than the problems which can be solved with algorithms and rules. B. Develop the students' rational judgement competence with the situation that can induce the active communication. C. Develop the problem situation that need the student's activity. D. Let the students easily take the situation about ratio and rate with suggesting much visual mode and sustain their interest and positive learning attitude.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the readability of the 2015 revised elementary science textbooks at the vocabulary and sentence levels, and to provide an opportunity to use vocabulary and sentences with an appropriate level of readability for writing textbooks in the future. To do this, the readability of the 2015 revised elementary science textbook was analyzed and the vocabulary and sentence level the readability of sentences defining scientific terminology were analyzed. The results were then compared to the readability of previous curriculum textbooks. The results are as follows: first, the grade average of vocabulary remained at 1.5-2.1, with vocabulary appropriate to the elementary school level being used on average. However, grades 4 to 5 vocabulary are distributed at a relatively high rate. Second, the sentence-level analysis shows that the sentence lengths for the third and fifth grades were relatively long and the percentage of simple sentences was low. Third, compared to other curriculum textbooks, it was confirmed that the proper level of readability was maintained at the vocabulary level, but that the sentence lengths and the percentage of simple sentences could adversely affect the readability of third-grade science textbooks.

  • Science textbook is the most frequently used teaching material in elementary schools of the United States and Korea. Elementary science textbooks of the United States and Korea are analyzed to find out the educational objectives and characteristics of contents shown in textbooks. About 100 pages each in the first grade and fourth grade science textbooks each nations are selected randomly for educational objective analysis. Life science contents of 1st to 6th grade are analyzed from elementary science textbooks of the United States and Korea. The analyzed textbooks in Korea are 'Wise life,' an integrated subject with social studies and science, and 'science.' The analyzed elementary science textbooks of the United States are Harcourt Science, which is one of the frequently used textbooks. The educational objective framework used includes science knowledge, scientific inquiry, scientific attitude, STS, and philosophy and history of science. The results show science textbooks of the United States emphasize scientific knowledge more than scientific inquiry. Korean science textbooks emphasize scientific inquiry more than scientific knowledge. Elementary science textbooks of the United States present some life science topics redundantly and expose more difficult topics than Korean.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences between Korean mathematics textbooks and CPMP textbooks in the view of conceptual network, structure of mathematical contents, instructional design, and teaching and learning environment to explore the implications for mathematics education in Korea. According to the results, Korean textbooks emphasized the mathematical structures and conceptual network, on the other hand, CPMP textbooks focused on making connections between mathematical concepts and corresponding real life situations as well as mathematical structures. And generalizing mathematical concepts at the symbolic level was very important objective in Korean textbooks, but in the CPMP textbooks, investigating mathematical ideas and solving problems in diverse contexts including real- life situations were considered very important. Teachers using Korean textbooks preferred an explanatory teaching method with the use of concrete manipulatives and student worksheet, however, teachers using CPMP textbooks emphasized collaborative group activities to communicate mathematical ideas and encouraged students to use graphing calculators when they explore mathematical concepts and solve problems.

  • The purposes of this study are to analyze the elementary school science textbooks (chemistry part) developed under the 7th national curriculum and to compare with those under the 6th national curriculum. The lesson hour, the number of pages, contents at each grade, deleted or newly introduced contents were analyzed. Some features of the 'Separation of mixtures' chapter were also analyzed. Educational implications were discussed in the aspect of whether the intention of revised curriculum was reflected, especially whether the amount of teaming was decreased.
