  • This study aims to determine the implications of the efficient and effective implementation of science core competency (ScC) education by examining the state of science core competencies derived from the 2015 revised elementary school science curriculum and analyzing teachers' and students' perceptions. To this end, this paper investigated the reality of reflecting the science core competencies of science textbooks in a group of third and fourth graders from seven elementary schools who passed the test. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with four elementary school teachers who participated in qualification textbook selection, and 156 elementary school students were surveyed to determine their perceptions of science core competencies. Findings showed that, first, 1,586 science core competencies were reflected throughout the textbooks, with an average of 227 per textbook and biology being the most salient area. Second, teachers did not understand the difference between previous inquiry activities in textbooks and ScC education. Third, no statistically significant differences were observed in the perceptions of male and female students on science core competencies, the highest average of perceptions being those of scientific thinking ability. From these results, this study concluded that for ScC education to be realized as a curriculum, textbooks must be organized according to the purpose of core competency education, implementing practical changes, and efforts must be directed toward changing the perceptions of individuals who deliver education.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the nature of the science views of science teachers and high school students as well as the views expressed in 10th grade science textbooks. The subjects were a high school science teacher, 18 male students and 11 female students in a 10th grade class located in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. The data were analyzed in terms of three main categories of the nature of the science: the definition of science, the development of science, and the method of science. In the results, it was found that the textbook had an inductivism point of view, and that the teacher had a falsificationism point of view in terms of the definition of science. However, the teacher presented the inductive point of view of the textbook in the class. After the class, the students showed an inductive point of view. In terms of scientific development, the textbook represented a relativism point of view briefly, and the viewpoint of the teacher also expressed relativism. The teacher taught briefly from the relativism point of view, as in the textbook. The viewpoints of the students were inductivism and were not affected by the textbook or the explanations of the teacher. In terms of scientific methods, the viewpoints of the textbook and the teacher were falsificationism, and the teacher represented falsificationism views in her classes. The views of the students also showed falsificationism after their classes. However, before conclusions can be made, it is necessary to find concrete proof of the teaching effect on the viewpoints of the students in continuing research.

  • Previous studies on double scale models, visual models with two different scales (Chong, 2015), have focused on double number line and little research has been conducted on how to employ double scale models in the elementary mathematics textbooks series. Given this, we analyzed the characteristics of double scale models in the Japanese elementary mathematics textbooks in the following aspects: (a) the contents of units where double scale models were used; (b) the purposes of using such models; (c) the types of such models tailored to the contents and grade levels; and (d) the characteristics of problem contexts dealing with the models. The results of this study showed that double scale models were effectively used to connect the contents related to multiplication, specifically for the contexts of ratio. Such models were addressed for students in a systematic and gradual way as the grade levels went up. Based on these results, this paper describes implications on how to use double scale models in mathematics textbooks.

  • This study is a comparative analysis of the layout of Korean textbooks in Korea and China in the 3rd and 4th grades. According to the times, textbooks are constantly changing and developing in various fields from contents to design. But a tool for learning remains was unchanged. Especially, the textbooks of elementary school are aimed at conveying basic knowledge by inducing interest of children. So the layout design is important. By combining typography, illustration, color, and margins in a well-balanced and uniform design, the contents of textbooks can be well transmitted to children. Therefore, this study has recognized the importance of layout and tried to suggest improvement by grasping the lack of Chinese textbook which is lagging behind design.

  • The purpose of this study is analysis of to investigate relation proportion problem of mathematics textbooks of 7th curriculum to proportional reasoning(relative thinking, unitizing, partitioning, ratio sense, quantitative and change, rational number) of Lamon's proposal at sixth grade students. For this study, I develop two test papers; one is for proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test paper and the other is for proportional reasoning test paper which is devided in 6 by Lamon. I test it with 2 group of sixth graders who lived in different region. After that I analysis their correlation. The result of this study is following. At proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test, the mean score is 68.7 point and the score of this test is lower than that of another regular tests. The percentage of correct answers is high if the problem can be solved by proportional expression and the expression is in constant proportion. But the percentage of correct answers is low, if it is hard to student to know that the problem can be expressed with proportional expression and the expression is not in constant proportion. At proportion reasoning test, the highest percentage of correct answers is 73.7% at ratio sense province and the lowest percentage of that is 16.2% at quantitative and change province between 6 province. The Pearson correlation analysis shows that proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test and proportion reasoning test has correlation in 5% significance level between them. It means that if a student can solve more proportion problem of mathematics textbooks then he can solve more proportional reasoning problem, and he have same ability in reverse order. In detail, the problem solving ability level difference between students are small if they met similar problem in mathematics text book, and if they didn't met similar problem before then the differences are getting bigger.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the units related to robot education in the Practical Arts textbooks according to the 2015 revised curriculum. As a result, all textbooks had a common system of introduction, development, and organization, and all of them showed a similar flow. Learning objectives were presented in all textbooks, but no affective goals were presented except cognitive and functional goals. The contents of robot learning suggest the meaning and type of robots, the structure and sensors of robots, and the activities of making robots, but the contents of robot ethics, the production and activities of various robot works, and the use of robots in the problem solving process are not presented. The assembly robot and the infrared sensor are used in common, and it consists of presenting robot production and control training materials in experience activities and arranging units through evaluation, and the A, C, and F textbooks also provide the unit auxiliary data. In the future, it will be necessary to include the contents of robot ethics education centered on the design/manufacturer and user-oriented robot ethics such as the recognition of the limits of robots, the principles of using robots correctly, safety education, personal information and privacy protection.
