Phototrophic bacteria T-20 investigated in the present report was isolated from Thailand oil, Cells of the bacterium were rod-shaped. measured $0.6{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$ wide, and $2.3{\mu}m$ long. A color of cell suspension was red, and the long wavelength absorption maxima of the bacteriochlorophyll measured in 870nm. Substrates utilized as carbon sources: citrate, aspirate, glutamate, and fructose: unique for this strain is the liquefaction of gelatine, Ubiquinone Q-8 was also found. Rhodocyclus gelatinosus, which was reported in Bergey's Manual of Systematics Bacteriology, was corresponded to T-20.
Physiological responses of rice to the flooding time of different water turbidity (clear water, sub-muddy water, muddy water) were analyzed as photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, transpiration, and physiological recovery. Photosynthetic rate was higher as turbidity increased and decreased as flooding time was extended. Floodings of 36 hrs and 42 hrs were resulted in 25% and 50% decrease of photosynthetic rate, respectively. Transpiration rate was higher in high turbidity (increased 30%, 25%, and 20% in clear, sub-muddy, and muddy water, respectively) and in increased floodings. Fv/Fm decreased as increased turbidity and flooding time. About 20% decrease of Fv/Fm was recorded in 48 hrs and 36 hrs after flooding with clear water and sub-muddy water(including muddy water), respectively. Total nitrogen was decreased with flooding treatment. Significant decrease of total nitrogen was occurred 36 hrs after flooding with muddy water, Dry weight measured 2 weeks after flooding treatment as an indication of recovery of flooding stress didn't show significant difference with turbidity, but significantly decreased as flooding time was prolonged. About 25% and 50% decreases were found in 24 hrs and 42 hrs flooding time, respectively. furthermore, 48 hrs of flooding with sub-muddy and muddy water resulted in no physiological recovery. Photosynthetic rate was decreased 15% and 10% with clear water and muddy water(including sub-muddy water), respectively. The rate was dramatically decreased 42 hrs after flooding. Transpiration rate increased about 20% regardless of turbidity and flooding time. We found transitory decrease of photosynthetic and transpiration rate at the point of 24 hrs after flooding and right after do-flooding.
This study was carried out to obtain information of the photosynthetic rate at various temperature and light intensity, stomata, chlorophyll, specific leaf weight, characteristics of aerial part and root in ginseng new cultivars developed by pure line selection. The light saturation point of leaves in new cultivars and Jakyungjong were 15,000 lux, and the optimum air temperature on the photosynthesis of new cultivars and Jakyungjong were 20$\^{C}$. The photosynthetic rates were increased in order of Jakyungjong, Gopoong, Chunpoong and Yunpoong. The dark respiration rate of leaves in ginseng cultivars were increased according to the increasing of temperature, and the dark respiration rate of leaves of Yunpoong was the highest among cultivars. The specific leaf weight (SLW) were increased in order of Jakyungjong, Yunpoong, Gopoong, Chunpoong, but total chlorophyll contents were not different among cultivars. Stomata frequency of Yunpoong was the highest being 69.2ea among cultivars, while the length of stomata was reverse. Yunpoong was superior in aerial part among ginseng cultivars : the number of stem was 1.8ea, the number of palmately leaves was 7.7ea, the number of leaflets was 41.0ea, leaf area was 12.3 dm$^2$ The root weight were increased in order of Jakyungjong, Gopoong, Chunpoong and Yunpoong. Chunpoong and Gopoong hove good root shape the length of tap root in Chunpoong and Gopoong were the longest being 6.5 cm and 6.8 cm respectively, but that in Yunpoong was the shortest being 4.4 cm.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of foliage plants on reducing indoor carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). Five foliage plants such as $Hedera$$helix$ L., $Ficus$$benjamina$ L., $Pachira$$aquatica$, $Chamaedorea$$elegans$, and $Ficus$$elastica$ were selected and cultivated in two different growth medium (peatmoss and hydroball). Each plant was placed in an airtight chamber and then treated with the combinations of two different $CO_2$ concentrations (500 or 1,000 ppm) and two different light intensities (50 or $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$). The change of $CO_2$ concentration (ppm) in the airtight chamber during day and night was measured and then converted into the photosynthetic rate (${\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$). As the results, each foliage plant reduced $CO_2$ level in the airtight chamber for one hour by photosynthesis. $Pachira$$aquatica$ and $Ficus$$elastica$ absorbed $CO_2$ more effectively compared to the other plants. The plants exposed to higher $CO_2$ concentration (1,000 ppm) and higher light intensity ($200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) showed more effective $CO_2$ elimination rate and photosynthetic rate. The plants that have wide leaves and big leaf areas such as $Pachira$$aquatica$, $Hedera$$helix$ L.,and $Ficus$$elastica$ showed higher photosynthetic rate than the other plants that have smaller leaves. Released $CO_2$ concentration by respiration of the plants during the night was very low compared to the absorbed $CO_2$ concentration by photosynthesis during the day. There was no significant difference between peatmoss and hydroball medium on reducing $CO_2$ concentration and increasing photosynthetic rate. In conclusion, this study suggested that foliage plants can effectively eliminate indoor $CO_2$. Optimum environmental control in relation to photosyntheis and usage of right indoor foliage plants having lots of leaves and showing active photosynthesis even under low light intensity like indoor light condition would be required to increase the elimination capacity of indoor $CO_2$.

This study investigated the effect of light intensity on the removal of particulate matter by Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' and Spathiphyllum spp.. An acrylic chamber ($600{\times}800{\times}1200mm$, $L{\times}W{\times}H$) modeled as an indoor space and a green bio-filter ($495{\times}495{\times}1000mm$, $L{\times}W{\times}H$) as an air purification device were made of acrylic. The removal of particulate matter PM10 and PM1, the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and number of stomata of Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' and Spathiphyllum spp. were measured according to three different levels of light intensity (0, 30 and $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$). Regarding the length of time taken for PM10 to reach $1{\mu}g$, the Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' showed a significant difference according to the presence or absence of light, and there was no significant difference shown between light intensity of 30 and $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. As for the Spathiphyllum spp., there was no significant difference between 0 and $30{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$, while a significant difference was shown at $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. After 90 minutes, the PM1, PM10, and $CO_2$ residuals of the Spathiphyllum spp. were lowest at $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. The remaining amount of PM1 and PM10 was lower with the Spathiphyllum spp. than with the Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne', even at $0{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. With both plants, the higher the light intensity, the higher the photosynthetic rate, while the stomatal conductance did not show any significant difference. Spathiphyllum spp. showed a higher photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance and a greater number of stomata than Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne', and stomata were observed in both the front and back sides of the leaves. The air purification effect of Spathiphyllum spp. is considered to be better than Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' at the same light intensity due to such plant characteristics. Therefore, in order to select effective indoor plants for the removal of particulate contamination in an indoor space, the characteristics of plants such as the photosynthetic rate and the number and arrangement of stomata according to indoor light intensity should be considered.
The results of the investigation on the relationship between the varietal difference of photosynthesis capacity and carbohydrate metabolism and the susceptibility to sudden wilting are as follow: 1. Yushin and Milyang 23, varieties in which sudden wilting occurs easily, showed that the photosynthesis capacity at the young panicle formation stage and the contents of chlorophyll of the flag leaf were lower than Jinhung which did not show sudden wilting. 2. Respiration consumption index (${\frac{amount\;of\;respiration}{amount\;of\;assimilation}{\time}100$) of Yushin and Milyang 23 were higher than Jinhung's. 3. Regarding sugar contents of each internode at the ripening stage, the contents of the second and third internodes of Yushin were lower than Jinhung, but no varietal difference was found in the 1st internode. 4. The starch content of the Yushin node sharply decreased compared with Jinhung at the ripening stage. In Jinhung it was especially higher in lowerinternodes, but in the third internode of Yushin. was not more than 50% of that in higher internode's.
The acidic deposition (wet) was collected at three different locations; representative industrial (Kun-Jang industrial areas), semiindustrial (Kunsan City) and nonindustrial (Daeya areas) region between March, 1991 and June, 1993. Samples were analyzed for major chemical components along with pH. Also the responses of Hypnum filunzaeforme to the acidic deposition adjusted to pH 4.6, 3.6 and 2.6 with 1:4 molar ratio of nitric to sulfuric acid were investigated. Seasonal variation of pH showed the lowest in early spring and the highest in summer. The annual mean concentrations of $S0_4^{2-},\;NO_3^{-}\;and\;NH_4^{+}$ were 2.94 (81.0%), 0.48 (13.2%) and 0.21 (5.78%) mg/l in industrial region and 0.61 (64.21%), 0.25 (26.3%) and 0.9 (9.5%) mg /I in nonindustrial region, respectively. $S0_4^{2-}$ contents of industrial region was 4 times higher than those of nonindustrial region. The ratio of $S0_4^{2-}\;to\;NO_3^{-}$ was 4.75~7.35 in industrial region and 0.69-6.36 in nonindustrial region. The acidic deposition near industrial region was associated with excess ions, expecially $S0_4^{2-}$. Nitrate reductase activity(NRA) of mosses was inhibited by acidic deposition in both regions. The time required for the maximum NRA induction by 2mM $KNO_3$ was shortened in mosses collected from industrial region. Photosynthesis of H. plumaejorme began to decrease with acidic deposition by pH below 4.6, and was completely inhibited at pH 2.6 in both regions. Water potential of mosses treated with acidic deposition was almost constant during 18 days, however after withholding the supply of acidic deposition, it was rapidly decreased.

The growth experiment under shading condition has been performed to understand the eco-physiological responses of crops to light in terms of photosynthesis. There are two types of shading: overall shading and partial shading. In this study, the chlorophyll fluorescence of soybean was observed under the overall shading of the box made by polyresin and the partial shading at agrivoltaic system. The overall shading condition during vegetative growth induced lower SPAD and Electron transport rate (ETR). These lower values recovered after removal of shading box. However, the Non-photochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ) became lower under overall shading and higher under partial shading. Such increase in NPQ limited crop photosynthesis even though the ETR was almost same to the control without shading treatment. Under the condition of partial shading, the values of SP AD and ETR for soybean did not change. However, the NPQ was higher than control condition. This suggests that the crop photosynthesis under both types of shading would be decreased by different eco-physiological processes which are the lower ETR in overall shading and the higher NP Q in partial shading despite the reduced light under shading conditions.

Changes in air temperature, CO2 concentration and precipitation due to climate change are expected to have a significant impact on soybean productivity. This study was conducted to evaluate the climate change impact on growth and development of determinate soybean cultivar in the southern parts of Korea. The high temperature during vegetative period, which does not accompany the increase of CO2 concentration, increased the canopy photosynthetic rate in soybean, but after flowering, the high temperature above the optimal ranges interrupts the photosynthetic metabolism. In yield and yield components, high temperature reduced both the pod and seed number and single seed weight, resulting in a reduction of total seed yield. On the other hand, the increase in CO2 concentration dramatically increased the canopy photosynthetic rate over the whole growth period. In addition, high CO2 concentration increased the number of pods and seeds, which had a positive effect on total seed yield. Under concurrent elevation of air temperature and CO2 concentration, canopy photosynthesis increased significantly, but enhanced canopy photosynthesis did not lead to an increase in soybean seed yield. The increase in biomass and branch by enhanced canopy photosynthesis seems to be attributed to an increase in the total number of pods and seeds per plant, which compensates for the negative effects of high temperature on pod development. However, Single seed weight tended to decrease rapidly by high temperature, regardless of CO2 concentration level. Elevated CO2 concentration did not compensate for the poor distribution of assimilations from source to sink caused by high temperature. These results show that the damage of future soybean yield and quality is closely related to high temperature stress during seed filling period.

The JK-1 isolate which was the best producer of indole-3-acetic acid and carotenoid among the 388 strains isolated from 28 wetlands in Jeju, was identified to be Rhodopseudomonas palustirs belongs to a typical group of non sulfur purple bacteria based on 16S sRNA sequencing. This study investigated the effect of different cultural conditions of pH, temperature, agitation, light and aeration on growth, IAA and carotenoid production of photosynthetic bacterium JK-1 for optimization of IAA and carotenoid production. It was found that growth, IAA, carotenoid, and bacteriochlorophyll production with light (3,000~3,500 Lux) and agitation (100 rpm) showed better results than those with dark/static or dark/agitation (100 rpm) in anaerobic conditions. The optimal pH, temperature and agitation speed for cell growth were 7, $30^{\circ}C$, 150 rpm, for IAA production were 9, $30^{\circ}C$, 150rpm and for carotenoid production were 6, $25^{\circ}C$, 50 rpm, cultured for 72 h under anaerobic light, respectively. The growth and IAA production were high in aerobic culture compared with anaerocic culture, whereas carotenoid and bacteriochlorophyll content were decreased extremely in aerobic condition (0.5~1 vvm). Subsequently, the optimal culture conditions for JK-1 were selected with pH 7, $30^{\circ}C$ and 100 rpm under anaerobic light and the effect on plant growth was tested by pot assay. Inoculation of JK-1 with 3% (v/v) level caused increase in shoot and root dry weigh that varied from 20%~58% to 40%~28% in young radish in camparison to uninoculated treatment at 50 days of growth. The study suggests that the JK-1 isolate may serve as efficient biofertilizer inoculants to promote plant growth.
