  • We report experimental results on 940-nm 350-mW AlGaAs/InGaAs transverse single-mode laser diodes (LDs) adopting graded-index separate confinement heterostructures (GRIN-SCH) and p,n-clad asymmetric structures, with improved temperature and small-divergence beam characteristics under high-output-power operation, for a three-dimensional (3D) motion-recognition sensor. The GRIN-SCH design provides good carrier confinement and prevents current leakage by adding a grading layer between cladding and waveguide layers. The asymmetric design, which differs in refractive-index distribution of p-n cladding layers, reduces the divergence angle at high-power operation and widens the transverse mode distribution to decrease the power density around emission facets. At an optical power of 350 mW under continuous-wave (CW) operation, Gaussian narrow far-field patterns (FFP) are measured with the full width at half maximum vertical divergence angle to be 18 degrees. A threshold current (Ith) of 65 mA, slope efficiency (SE) of 0.98 mW/mA, and operating current (Iop) of 400 mA are obtained at room temperature. Also, we could achieve catastrophic optical damage (COD) of 850 mW and long-term reliability of 60℃ with a TO-56 package.

  • Spectral reflectance is sparse in space, and while the traditional spectral-reconstruction algorithm does not make full use of this characteristic sparseness, the compressive sensing algorithm can make full use of it. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing compressive sensing based on the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm, a new algorithm based on the Dice matching criterion is proposed. The Dice similarity coefficient is introduced, to calculate the correlation coefficient of the atoms and the residual error, and is used to select the atoms from a library. The accuracy of Spectral reconstruction based on the pseudo-inverse method, Wiener estimation method, OMP algorithm, and DOMP algorithm is compared by simulation on the MATLAB platform and experimental testing. The result is that spectral-reconstruction accuracy based on the DOMP algorithm is higher than for the other three methods. The root-mean-square error and color difference decreases with an increasing number of principal components. The reconstruction error decreases as the number of iterations increases. Spectral reconstruction based on the DOMP algorithm can improve the accuracy of color-information replication effectively, and high-accuracy color-information reproduction can be realized.

  • An effective and precise method using a scanning white-light interferometer (SWLI) for three-dimensional surface measurements, in particular for roughness measurements, has been proposed. The measurement of a microscopically sloped area using an interferometer has limitations, due to the numerical aperture of the lens. In particular, for roughness measurements, it is challenging to obtain accurate height data for a sloped area using the interferometer, due to diffraction of the light. Owing to these optical limitations of the interferometer for roughness measurements, the Ra measurements performed using an interferometer contain errors. To overcome the limitations, we propose a method consisting of the following two steps. First, we evaluate the height data and set the invalid height area to be blank, using the characteristics of the modulus peak, which has a low peak value for signals that have low reliability in the interferogram. Next, we interpolate the blank area using the adjacent reliable area. Rubert roughness standards are used to verify the proposed method. The results obtained by the proposed method are compared to those obtained with a stylus profilometer. For the considered sinusoidal samples, Ra ranges from $0.053{\mu}m$ to $6.303{\mu}m$, and we show that the interpolation method is effective. In addition, the method can be applied to a random surface where Ra ranges from $0.011{\mu}m$ to $0.164{\mu}m$. We show that the roughness results obtained using the proposed method agree well with profilometer results. The $R^2$ values for both sinusoidal and random samples are greater than 0.995.

  • The aerosol optical properties such as depolarization ratio (${\delta}$) and aerosol extinction-to-backscatter ratios (S, LIDAR ratio) and ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}m$ exponent (${\AA}$) derived from measurement with AERONET sun/sky radiometer at Gangneung-Wonju National University (GWNU), Gangneung, Korea ($37.77^{\circ}N$, $128.87^{\circ}E$) during a winter season (December 2014 - February 2015) are presented. The PM concentration measurements are conducted simultaneously and used to identify the high-PM events. The observation period was divided into three cases according to the PM concentrations. We analysed the ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ during these high PM-events. These aerosol optical properties are calculated by the sun/sky radiometer data and used to classify a type of aerosols (e.g., dust, anthropogenic pollution). The higher values of ${\delta}$ with lower values of S and ${\AA}$ were measured for the dust particles. The mean values of ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ at 440-870 nm wavelength pair (${\AA}_{440-870}$) for the Asia dust were 0.19-0.24, 36-56 sr, and 0.48, respectively. The anthropogenic aerosol plumes are distinguished with the lower values of ${\delta}$ and higher values of ${\AA}$. The mean values of spectral ${\delta}$ and ${\AA}_{440-870}$ for this case varied 0.06-0.16 and 1.33-1.39, respectively. We found that aerosol columnar optical properties obtained from the sun/sky radiometer measurement are useful to identify the aerosol type. Moreover, the columnar aerosol optical properties calculated based on sun/sky radiometer measurements such as ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ will be further used for the validation of aerosol parameters obtained from LIDAR observation as well as for quantification of the air quality.

  • Obtaining accurate visibility measurements is a common atmospheric optical problem, and of vital significance to civil aviation. To effectively evaluate and improve the accuracy of visibility measurements, an outdoor atmospheric simulation chamber with dimensions of $1.8{\times}1.6{\times}55.7m^3$ was constructed. The simulation chamber could provide a relatively homogeneous haze environment, in which the visibility varied from 10 km to 0.2 km over 5 hours. A baseline-changing visibility measurement system was constructed in the chamber. A mobile platform (receiver) was moved from 5 m to 45 m, stopping every 5 m, to measure and record the transmittance. The total least-squares method was used to fit the extinction coefficient. During the experiment conducted in the chamber, the unit weight variance was as low as $1.33{\times}10^{-4}$ under high-visibility conditions, and the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was as high as 0.99 under low-visibility conditions, indicating high stability and accuracy of the system used to measure the extinction coefficients and strong consistency between repeated measurements. A Grimm portable aerosol spectrometer (PAS) was used to record the aerosol distribution, and then Mie theory was used to calculate the extinction coefficients. The theoretical results were found to be consistent with the measurements and exhibited a positive correlation, although they were higher than the measured values.

  • A robust, accurate, broad-band, alternating current sensor using fiber-optics is being developed as a part of optical over current protection relay system. The sensor uses the Faraday effect in optical fiber and polarimetric measurements tc sense electrical current. The current sensing coil consists of a length of twisted optical fiber and Faraday rotator mirror to suppress the linear birefringence effect. Due to its single-ended closed path structure, it can not only be easily installed to the target with great isolation from other fields in the vicinity, but the sensitivity can be increased by using multiple turns. This paper reports on the theoretical backgrounds of the sensor design and the preliminary experimental results.

  • The hutches which are installed in the beamline are largely classified into two, i.e XPP (X-ray pump probe) and CXI (Coherent X-ray image). Laser room is installed on the hutch and provides laser to XPP and CXI simultaneously. And two hutches have heavy crane to install some optics equipments. Safety and reliability of hutch structures should be taken into account for the precise operating of the laser facilities, so vibration analysis is essential to do this. The main purpose of vibration analysis is to install hutch structures with large stiffness. We have changed materials specification several times to install hutch structures having strong stiffness. Now hutch structures were installed and checked vibration status at laser room and XPP hutch. The results of laser table and robot arm satisfy vibration criteria. This paper explains about the design and vibration analysis of hutch structures.

  • Multilayer mirrors are optical elements that can replace single crystal optical elements such as silicon or germanium, and they have artificial diffraction plane of a thickness of several nanometers. We examined the first Bragg angle and the reduction of reflectivity by variation of layer thickness in a W/Si multilayer mirror of small d-spacing. A W/Si multilayer mirror for an incidence angle of $0.55^{\circ}$ and an energy of 17.5 keV was designed and showed a maximum reflectivity of 72.67%. When the thickness of tungsten or silicon layer was simultaneously changed, the first Bragg angle was shifted and the reflectivity was reduced. When there was a change in thickness for one layer of W/Si multilayer, no change in the reflectivity was showed but the unevenness of the envelope was observed. Reduction of reflectivity was also observed at random Gaussian thickness variations. It is possible to predict the tolerance of multilayer mirror by examining the reflectivity degradation according to the thickness change in the W/Si multilayer mirror of small d-spacing.

  • In this paper, a modified elliptical lens antenna design is proposed to improve the performance of 100 GHz mini-lens antennas used in the ECEI(Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging) module at KSTAR. A hemispherical lens is added on the bottom plate of the conventional elliptic lens antenna, and a 100 GHz dipole antenna is located on the end point of the hemispherical lens. Using geometrical optics, antenna radiated EM fields are designed to be totally reflected from the inner surface of the hemispherical lens, and thereby the antenna patterns are more focused toward the main beam. The validity of the proposed design is confirmed by the 3D EM simulator. The modified elliptical lens antenna provides 23.8 dB maximum gain, which is 2.2 dB gain improvement as compared with the conventional elliptic lens. Also, the side love levels of E- and H-planes are decreased by 2.6 dB and 3.4 dB, respectively.

  • 3D modeling is extensively used in the field of architecture, machinery and contents production such as movies. Modeling is a time-consuming task. In order to compensate for these drawbacks, attempts have recently been made to reduce the production period by applying 3D scanning technology. 3D scanning for small objects can be done directly with laser or optics, but large buildings and sculptures require expensive equipment, which makes it difficult to acquire data directly. In this study, 3D modeling data for a large object is acquired using photometry with using drones to acquire the image data. The maintenance method for uniform spacing between the sculpture and the drone, the measurement method for the flight line were presented. In addition, we presented a production environment that can utilize the obtained 3D point cloud data for animation and a rendered animation result to find ways to make it in various environments.
