Soil samples collected at the Kangwon and Donghae mines were investigated for the characterization of heavy metals using physicochemical and mineralogical properties. Arsenic (As) concentrations of soil samples sieved above 18 mesh and under 325 mesh at the Kangwon mine are 250.5 to 445.7 ppm, respectively. For soil samples sieved above 18 mesh at the Donghae mine, the concentrations of As, Pb, and Zn are 70.4, 1,055, and 781.9, while 117.7 ppm for As, 2,295 ppm for Pb, and 1,346 ppm for Zn are shown for the samples sieved under 325 mesh. XRD and SEM data indicated that the samples from the Kangwon mine included quartz, mica, albite, chlorite, magnetite, and amphibole while those from the Donghae mine contained quartz, mica, kaolinite, chlorite, amphibole, and rutile. SEM-EDS showed that magnetite found in the samples at the Kangwon mine was positively correlated with arsenic concentrations whereas ilmenite in the samples from the Donghae mine contained only small amount of As. Our results suggest that physicochemical and mineralogical characterization plays an important role in optimizing recovery treatments of soils contaminated in mine development areas.
Goryeong Yangjeondong Petroglyph on the joint face of the bedrock (6m in width, 3m in height) composed of the green sandstone has circles and shield pattern sculptures. The rock is mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, chlorite, illite and calcite with the clay minerals. These clay minerals occur as pore lining, replacement of component and pore fillings. Investigated the weathering aspects including the connection between soluble salt and rock weathering and the stability of the bedrock with petroglyphs. The Major deterioration aspect are grain peel-off, surface exfoliation, cracks and damage. And the bedrock where the joints and cracks advance is interpreted with the fact that has the possibility of the falling rock. For conservation, adhesive need to cover crack and damage and consolidation is necessary in the surface which becomes weak.
2:1 clay minerals such as smectite incorporating ammonium were extracted to investigate the ammonium behavior and nitrogen isotope characteristics for two different sediment cores which were collected from shimmering sites on seafloor of the Wakamiko crater, southwestern Japan. Inorganic nitrogen contents in clay fraction were estimated by calibration curve based on consistently decreasing carbon and nitrogen ratio during the treatment to decompose organic materials, after removing inorganic carbon. The results show that the proportions of inorganic nitrogen for total nitrogen in clay fraction of SWS site(Core#1094MR: av. 18.2%) are higher than those in SES site(Core#1093MG: av. 11.5%). Relatively good crystallinity of the former suggests that exchangeable ammonium was transformed to non-exchangeable ammonium during more evolving diagenetic process. Nitrogen isotope variance of clay fraction(SES site: Core#1093MG: -4.4 ~ +0.2 ‰, av. -2.4 ‰; SWS site: Core#1094MR: -0.7 ~ +3.0 ‰, av. +1.5 ‰) during sequential decomposition of exchangeable ammonium suggests that heat flow derived from deep magma led to nitrogen isotope fractionation between dissolved ammonium and ammonia in the fluids involved in the formation of 2:1 clay mineral incorporating ammonium with local temperature variation.
The quanttative and structural analysis of the binary standard mixtures of albite and quartz, and microcline and albite were carried out using the Rietveld refinement method in order to investigate the accuracy and precision of the method. The quantitative analysis using the Rietveld method results in a standard deviation of 4 wt % for the albite-quartz standard mixtures and 1 wt % for the microcline-albite standard mixtures, suggesting that its accuracy is far better than that of the conventional XRD method in which only a few selected peaks are utilized. Furthermore, the unit-cell parameters of component minerals in mixtures were also estimated accurately during the analysis. It was observed that the refined weight fractions deviate systematically from their measured values when the method is applied to the mixtures that contain minerals with different degrees of preferred orientation, such as albite-quartz mixtures. The preferred orientation parameters and R-values suggest that the systematic deviation is caused as a result of the preferred orientation effect of feldspar crystallites. It is evident that the preferred orientation corrections are of help for the accurate determination of unit-cell parameters, although they may not improve the result of quantitative analysis significantly. The refined weight fraction of the mineral with higher degree of preferred orientation in mixture is greater than the measured one. This is apparently caused by the effect of geometry of feldspar crystallites in the surface of the mounted sample. The Rietveld refinement method minimizes the problems inherent in the traditional XRD methods, such as the line overlap, primary extinction, and preferred orientation effect, by fitting every data point in a whole pattern explicitly. Furthermore, accurate unit-cell parameters as well as scale factors that can be obtained from the Rietveld refinement are used for the quqantification. The present stdudy demonstrates that the Rietveld method yields far more accurate analytical result than the conventional XRD quantitative analysis method does.
The hydrogen in nominally anhydrous mineral is known to be associated with lattice defects, but it also can exist in the form of water and hydroxyl groups on the large surface of the nanoscale particles. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of 1H solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as a robust experimental method to quantify the hydrogen atomic environments of amorphous silica nanoparticles with varying relative humidity. Amorphous silica nanoparticles were packed into NMR rotors in a temperature-humidity controlled glove box, then stored in different atmospheric conditions with 25% and 70% relative humidity for 2~10 days until 1H NMR experiments, and a slight difference was observed in 1H NMR spectra. These results indicate that amount of hydrous species in the sample packed in the NMR rotor is rarely changed by the external atmosphere. The amount of hydrogen atom, especially the amount of physisorbed water may vary in the range of ~10% due to the temporal and spatial inhomogeneity of relative humidity in the glove box. The quantitative analysis of 1H NMR spectra shows that the amount of hydrogen atom in amorphous silica nanoparticles linearly increases as the relative humidity increases. These results imply that the sample sealing capability of the NMR rotor is sufficient to preserve the hydrous environments of samples, and is suitable for the quantitative measurement of water content of ultrafine nominally anhydrous minerals depending on the atmospheric relative humidity. We expect that 1H solid-state NMR method is suitable to investigate systematically the effect of surface area and crystallinity on the water content of diverse nano-sized nominally anhydrous minerals with varying relative humidity.
Preservation of the original form is the principle for conservation, management and utilization of cultural heritages. Thus, non-destructive analysis of these samples are important field of the conservation science. In this study, examined the applicability of nondestructive surface X-ray diffraction analysis (ND-XRD) for cultural heritage by materials (rock specimen, jade stone, pigment painted specimen, earthen artifact, metal artifact). In result, all type of sample is recorded suitable X-ray diffraction patterns for identifying mineral composition in case of surface condition with adequate particle size and arrangement. And diffraction pattern is reflected surface information than matrix. Therefore, ND-XRD is thought to be applicable not only mineral identification but also interpretation of manufacturing technique and alteration trend about layered sample (in horizontally or vertically). Whereas some exceptional diffraction patterns were recorded due to overlapping information on specific crystal planes. It caused by skip the sample treatment (powdering and randomly orientation). It could be advantageously used for mineral identification, such as preferred orientation of clay minerals. In contrast, irregular diffraction pattern caused by single crystalline effect is required careful evaluation.
Electron microscopy of the tremolite-actinolite series amphiboles from the naturally occurring asbestos locality showed the morphological diversity including fibrous, acicular, and prismatic. Very thin, long, and flexible fibers of constant width form ropy bundles or mats. Acicular particles are slightly thick, long, elastic, and easily separated from the bundle of parallel rods. Acicular fragments of lower aspect ratio are formed during the crushing of the amphibole prism. Morphological features of the amphiboles are different depending on their localities and vary in a specimen. Morphological continuum between amphibole fiber and prism requires the establishment of reliable identification criterions and sample preparation protocol based on the relation between carcinogenicity and morphological features.
