  • This paper presents a low-cost robotic device for shoulder rehabilitation, which is capable of treating various shoulder disabilities. A 3-DOF passive shoulder joint tracking module was designed to allow for translational motion of the shoulder joint center during arm swing, which is essential for natural shoulder movement. The weight of the user's arm and the device were compensated for by springs, to enable gravity-free shoulder motion. In order to reduce the device's cost, only one actuator was used, which can be aligned with the user's shoulder joint in various orientations. The device is capable of implementing five representative shoulder motions, including flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, horizontal abd/adduction, internal/external rotation, and oblique raise. The proposed low-cost shoulder rehabilitation robot is expected to provide effective rehabilitation for patients with various shoulder impairments.

  • The incidence of rotator cuff tear is increasing rapidly due to the aging of the population and the advancement of radiological diagnosis, and so on. Recently, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is common way of surgery, and the surgical outcome is comparable to open rotator cuff repair. Arthroscopic repair is one of the minimally invasive procedures itself and may have additional benefits of postoperative pain reduction and early functional recovery. Recently, there has been increasing interest in various methods for improving the functional recovery of patients after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Various protocols of functional recovery after arthroscopic shoulder surgery are classified by the postoperative period, and they are being studied actively and improved at each stage. On the other hand, there are a range of methods according to the postoperative period, rehabilitation stage, characteristics of individual patients, degree of rotator cuff tear, and underlying disease. Therefore, for functional recovery after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, it is essential to establish proper regimens for functional recovery.

  • Osteoarthritis is a disease characterized by the progression of articular cartilage erosion, that increases pain during joint motion and reduces the ability to withstand mechanical stress, which in turn limits joint mobility and function. Damage to articular cartilage due to trauma or degenerative injury is considered a major cause of arthritis. Numerous studies and attempts have been made to regenerate articular cartilage. In the case of partial degenerative cartilage changes, microfracture and autologous chondrocyte implantation have been proposed as surgical treatment methods, but they have disadvantages such as insufficient mutual binding to the host cells, inaccurate cell delivery, and deterioration of healthy cartilage. Stem cell-based therapies have been developed to compensate for this. This review summarizes the drawbacks and consequences of various cartilage regeneration methods and describes the various attempts to treat cartilage damage. In addition, this review will discuss cartilage regeneration, particularly mesenchymal stem cell engineering-based therapies, and explore how to treat future cartilage regeneration using mesenchymal stem cells.

  • Coracoid impingement syndrome results from abnormal contact between the anterosuperior humerus and the coracoacromial arch. The coracoid impingement may occur from traumatic, idiopathic, or iatrogenic causes. Traumatic causes of coracoid impingement include fractures of scapular neck, coracoid process or lesser tuberosity. Coracoid impingement due to lesser tuberosity malunion is a rare disease and most of them were treated by open procedures. The authors present a case of coracoid impingement caused by malunion after isolated lesser tuberosity fracture which was treated by arthroscopic coracoplasty with percutaneous screw fixation.

  • Hemarthrosis occurring after arthroscopic surgery for lesions of the shoulder joint is a very rare complication that can develop due to an injury to the blood vessels when an anterior portal is formed. This is a complication that rarely develops in patients who are taking antithrombotic drugs or who do not have associated diseases, such as thrombocytopenia. We report a case of hemarthrosis that occurred after performing arthroscopic surgery to repair a rotator cuff tear in a patient with a stenosis in an arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis in the ipsilateral upper arm.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the regional disparity of ambulatory health care utilization considering spatio-temporal variation in South Korea during 1996-2008(precisely, in 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2008) using bayesian hierarchial spatio-temporal model. The spatial pattern uses an intrinsic gaussian conditional autoregressive (CAR) error component. Ornstein-Uhlenbeck method was applied to detect the temporal patterns. The results showed that substantial temporal-geographical variation depending on diseases exists in Korea. On the Contrary to the pattern of total outpatient utilizations, for example, the areas that chronic diseases distributed relatively high were most in rural where the proportion of elderly population was higher than in the urban. Chungcheongnam-do, Junlabuk-do, and Kyeongsangbuk-do had higher risks in hypertension, whereas arthritis was higher risk in the Kyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Junlanam-do, and Junlabuk-do. The results of this study suggested that the effective health intervention programmes needed to alleviate the regional variation of health care utilization. These outcomes also provided the foundation for further investigation of risk factors and interventions in these high-risk areas.

  • In modern society, lifestyle and individuality are important, and personalized lifestyle and patterns are emerging. The number of people with articulation diseases is increasing due to wrong living habits. In addition, as the number of households increases, there is a case where emergency care is not received at the appropriate time. We need information that can be managed by ourselves through accurate analysis according to the individual's condition for health and disease management, and care appropriate to the emergency situation. It is effectively used for classification and prediction of data using CNN in deep learning. CNN differs in accuracy and processing time according to the data features. Therefore, it is necessary to improve processing speed and accuracy for real-time healthcare. In this paper, we propose motion monitoring using Mask R-CNN for articulation disease management. The proposed method uses Mask R-CNN which is superior in accuracy and processing time than CNN. After the user's motion is learned in the neural network, if the user's motion is different from the learned data, the control method can be fed back to the user, the emergency situation can be informed to the guardian, and appropriate methods can be taken according to the situation.
