  • From the outset Library and Information Science as a field of discipline began as part of the social sciences (or applied social sciences) in the 1930s. However, due to the practicality and technology emphasized by functionalists, the social science characteristics deteriorated and the science and technological aspect became more accentuated. Ultimately, Library and Information Science was not able to identify its main research subject of libraries and associated apparatuses as a form of social knowledge system, and could not help but neglect to induct and apply theory and philosophy from the social sciences. In the present study, after an examination of social epistemology and sociology of knowledge, which are important epistemological foundations necessary for the strengthening of social scientific aspect of Library and Information Science, a new research parameter called sociology of library was presenteL The sociology of library will be a scheme for an epistemological turnover on the discipline of Library and Information Science.

  • 산업사회를 구성하고 발전 변화시키는 가장 중요한 힘은 과학과 지식이다. 그러므로 과학지식의 구조와 그림자는 현대사회의 구조와 과제에 그대로 반영된다. 한국과학저술인협회는 6월 18일 성균관대학에서 「과학과 사회」심포지움을 갖고 현대과학의 방법론적 특징등을 분석, 현대사회와 현대인이 처한 상황 진단을 모색했다. 이날 심포지움에서는 김경동교수(서울대 사회학과)의「기술과 사회변동」 및 노재식 박사(원자력연구소 환경부장)의 「국가발전과 환경보전」등 논문이 발표되었는데 다음은 그 요지이다.

STS and the Innovation of Sociology: Focusing on Actor-Network Theory (STS(과학기술학)와 사회학의 혁신: 행위자-연결망이론(ANT)을 중심으로)

  • Sociology(or social science in general) is often diagnosed as in the state of 'crisis' after the collapse of socialism and the erosion of national societies because of rapid globalization. This paper introduces some recent work within science and technology studies(STS) and discusses its potentials to reinvigorate sociology. Although sociologists have rarely regarded STS as contributing to 'mainstream' issues in sociology, an increasing number of STS writers and sociologists have recently started to notice such possibilities. One main reason of this recent change is that STS is no longer merely concerned to convey substantive findings about science and technology, but instead attempts to reconstruct key notions of sociology such as 'social', 'society' and 'agency'. It is in this respect that the discussion below aims to introduce, discuss, and assess the potential contribution of some recent work of STS to sociology. In particular, it is 'actor-network theory'(ANT) that explicitly attempts to examine and suggest the ways in which STS ran help innovate sociology. One major characteristics of ANT is to impute 'agency' to things(nonhumans) unlike traditional sociology. ANT argues that if sociology studies heterogeneous relationships between humans and nonhumans instead of human relations only, it can become once again a vigorous discipline which is able to provide alternative worlds central to the basis of sociology. So this paper focuses on, not the diverse approaches of STS, the characteristics of ANT and its potential contribution to sociology. The author concludes that ANT can not only rejuvenate sociology by implicating new forms of alternative worlds but also open the possibility to contribute to the democratic reformulation of human-nonhuman relationships.

A Comparative Study of Diverging Citation Patterns in the Disciplines of Physics and Sociology in Korea Differential Preferences according to Employment Status and Ph. D. Diploma Area (한국의 물리학과 사회학의 인용패턴 비교연구 - 전임 여부와 박사학위 취득지역을 중심으로)

  • Although the study of citation patterns is an important theme within the sociology of science, due to the fact that it is intimately related to the production, reproduction, and evaluation of knowledge, only sustained theoretical research outlining the differences of citation patterns between the hard and soft sciences has been conducted, and empirical studies nevertheless remain few and far between. The perspectives of institutionalism and constructivism have to attempted to explain different citation patterns between the hard and soft sciences as a contrast between 'what one says' and 'who one is'. Therefore, against this background this study examines the 'theoretical' controversy empirically by comparing the contrasting citation patterns of physics, as a representative of hard science, and sociology, as a representative of soft science. The results, in brief, are as follows: the citaton patterns in physics, as in sociology, vary according to the author's status within the hierarchical employment structure, i. e. whether s/he is a full-time lecturer or not, but diversity of citation patterns according to Ph. D. diploma area is unique to sociology. These results would suggest that the explanation of constructivism is more relevant in explaining variance according to the author's status in the employment hierarchy, but the approach of institutionalism is more appropriate to understanding variance due to Ph. D. diploma area. Furthermore, this implies the complex diversity of the citation patterns between the hard and soft sciences, pointing us to the more qualified conclusion that rather than having to choose between institutionalism and constructivism according to a mutually exclusive either/or logic, these two approaches can in fact be mutually complementary, and these approaches should also be applied piecemeal to different levels of phenomena. In conclusion, this comparative research enables us to assert the following two claims: firstly that physics, as a 'science in society', produces knowledge dependent on social context, and secondly that it also possesses a characteristic that transcends locality from the view of a sociology of knowledge.

Science Gifted and Talented Students' Views on Science - Technology - Society (과학 영재들의 STS에 대한 관점)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of STS by science gifted and talented students. A multiple-choice format questionnaire HS-VOSTS was administered to 134 science gifted and talented students. We found that most of students had possessed the tentativeness of scientific knowledge. Science gifted and talented students mainly agreed that government should not control scientists' researches. Science gifted and talented students emphasized that scientists should consider the positive and negative influences of research products. There was no significant difference according to the gender in the view of science gifted and talented students on the definition of science, the external and internal sociology of science, and epistemology. This study would provide implication for the development of gifted students' program and curriculum.

A Critical Examination of Shapin's Social Constructivism (세이핀의 사회구성주의에 대한 비판적 고찰)

  • The purpose of the paper is to examine the validity of social constructivism embodied in Shapin's case study of Boyle's air pump as a typical case study of the sociology of scientific knowledge. I shall argue that scientific activity has not only epistemic dimension but also non-epistemic dimension, and that social constructivism has put too much emphasis on non-epistemic social dimension such that it cannot provide any balanced understanding of scientific knowledge. I shall first examine the epistemic dimension of the debate between Boyle and Hobbes about air pump, then examine Shapin's view emphasizing epistemic one. Finally I consider some limits of social constructivism shown in Shapin's view.

Against Skepticism: Doubt and Belief in C. S. Peirce and Michael Polanyi (찰스 S. 퍼스와 마이클 폴라니의 회의론과 믿음(belief)에 대한 비교 연구)

  • Michael Polanyi's idea of tacit knowledge came from the realization that scientific objectivity and critical philosophy had become too restrictive for philosophy, especially in the realm of meaning, which is beyond positivistic proof and contains more non-critical elements than critical ones. In social life, people still share certain kinds of knowledge and beliefs which they obtain without making or learning those explicitly. Contemplating the role and significance of tacit knowledge, he called for a post-critical philosophy that integrates the realm of meaning and thereby appreciates the intertwined nature of tacit and explicit knowledge. Polanyi's position towards skepticism and doubt shows similarities with Charles S. Peirce's thinking about the relationship between belief and doubt. Although Peirce's semeiotics stands firmly in the tradition of critical philosophy, he affirms that doubt cannot be a constant state of mind and only belief can form a basis for a specific way of life. Polanyi's approach differs from Peirce's by focusing on the impossibility of scientific knowledge based solely on principles and precision, and his emphasis on the crucial role of the community of scientists. Nevertheless, the deeper implications of Peirce's contemplations on belief and doubt have myriad ramifications on the philosophy of science as well as the sociology of science.

A Study on the Plurality of Nature of Science in Science Education ('과학의 본성' 교육 -그 다원성 고찰-)

  • Nature of Science(NOS) has been a well-organized focus of science education and one of the key elements in defining and cultivating scientific literacy for more than a century. In recent years, a specific description of NOS, which is often known as 'the consensus view of NOS', has become very influential and has gained ready acceptance as an arrangement for both curriculum building and research into understanding of NOS by students and teachers in many countries around the world. This study has two purposes; one is to review some debates and criticism on the consensus view of NOS which consists of a list of sentences to describe nature of refined and general science, which have been heated up for the last few years by many prominent science education researchers, and the other is to consider alternative perspectives on NOS for the purpose of a new direction of NOS education. As a result of an investigation into such views as 'Teaching about NOS', 'Critical NOS', 'Critical Thinking-NOS', 'Whole Science', 'Features of Science' and 'Reconceptualized Family Resemblance Approach to NOS', some implications which focus on the generality and plurality of content knowledge of NOS based on current philosophy of science and sociology of scientific knowledge are suggested for the improvement of teaching and learning NOS.

  • 구조방정식모델(Structural Equation Modeling: SEM)은 변수들 간의 인관관계 및 상관관계를 검증하기 위한 통계기법으로 사회학 및 심리학 분야에서 개발되었지만 현재는 경영학, 광고학, 교육학, 생물학, 체육학, 의학, 정치학 등 여러 학문분야에서 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. Amos는 기본적으로 그래픽(Amos graphics)과 베이직(Amos basic)을 제공하기 때문에 정확한 프로그램의 작성이나 행렬에 대한 지식이 없는 초보자들도 아이콘을 이용하여 복잡한 연구모델이나 다중집단분석모델을 분석할 수 있다. PLS(Partial Least Square)는 모형 추정과정에서 발생하는 잔차 또는 예측오차를 최소화하여 예측력을 극대화하기 위한 프로그램이며, 즉, PLS-SEM는 표본 수가 적고 자료가 정규분포를 보이지 않거나 조형지표 모델이거나 복잡한 연구모델 분석에 유용하다. 최근 빅데이터의 열풍으로 자료들을 분석을 위한 도구로 R이 실무 현장에서 인기를 끌고 있다. R은 통계 프로그래밍 언어이자 오픈 소프트웨어 환경으로 통계, 그래픽, 데이터마이닝 등의 다양하고 방대한 양의 패키지들을 지원한다. R에서 제공되는 패키지들이 오픈 소스이고 선형 및 비선형 모델링, 고전적인 통계분석, 시 계열 분석, 분류 및 군집분석 등의 다양한 통계 패키지들을 제공한다는 측면에서 R은 실무는 물론 학문적인 측면에서도, 특히 통계를 기반으로 실증분석을 수행하는 사회과학연구들에서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The Development of an Instrument for Assessing Secondary Students' Views on the Nature of Science (과학의 본성에 대한 중등학생들의 견해조사를 위한 도구 개발)

  • An assessment instrument dealing with secondary students' views on the nature of science was developed in this study. The features in aspects of the nature of science are generally accepted as characterizing the scientific enterprise and we have focused on are: 1) the purposes of the scientific enterprise, 2) the nature of scientific enquiry, 3) the nature and status of scientific knowledge, and 4) the nature and functioning of the scientific community. The questionnaire is made of three sections; that is, "Scientific Question", "Experiment", and "Belief". The Scientific Questions probe was designed to examine the ways in which learners mark out science as a particular domain, and particularly the types of questions that they think are open to scientific investigation. The Experiment probe was designed to throw light on the ways in which learners may think about theories and their relationship to evidence in a range of contexts. A related aim concerns the sorts of activities that learners consider to be experiments, and their reasons for this. The Belief probe was designed to see whether students are able to articulate the grounds for their acceptance of a proposition and, if they are, to explore the nature of these grounds. The reliability of the instrument developed in this study was found to be 0.86.
