  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the development of scientific conceptual understanding through a process-centered assessment that visualizes the process of scientific argumentation. In this study, 353 high school students and five teachers participated in the scientific argumentation. As a result of analyzing students' utterances on the elements of argumentation, scientific concepts in intragroup were embodied through query and clarification of meaning, and organized through agreement and rebuttal. In intergroup argumentation, scientific concepts were elaborated through query, clarification of meaning, and change of claim. Teachers were able to understand the process of argumentation through small-group activity sheets where the process was visualized, thereby providing feedback and improving the class. Based on the results, the scientific argumentation of visualizing the process was found not only to allow students to perform self-assessment and peer-assessment but also to help teachers understand the argumentation process. The findings of this study guide process-centered assessment in the science curriculum and are expected to contribute to the promotion of scientific argumentation in classrooms.

  • Extended Reality (XR), such as virtual and augmented reality, has huge potential for immersive data visualization and analysis. In XR, users can interact with data and other users realistically by navigating the shared virtual space, allowing for more intuitive data analysis. However, creating a visualization in XR also poses a challenge because complicated, low-level programming is required, which hinders broad adaptation in visual analytics. This paper proposes an interactive visualization authoring tool based on hand gesture for immersive data visualization-Gadget Arms. The proposed system provides a novel user interaction to create and place visualization in the 3D virtual world. This simple, but intuitive, user interaction enables user designs the entire visualization space in the XR without using a host computer and low-level programming. Our user study also confirmed that the proposed user interaction significantly improves the usability of the visualization authoring tool.

  • The importance of data is increasing at a high rate as data is massively generated and taken into account in various policy supports and contents. However, because of their speed of growth, it is difficult to find the data that is needed. Both the methodological elements that summarize the data and the technical elements of the visualization that help to see at a glance are important. This paper summarizes data visualization methods to improve the currently used design - oriented infographics and propose data - centric infographics. In addition, we will present examples of data analysis and infographics production using Tableau Public. The Gwangju metropolitan city bus user data was used for infographics production, and the results show that the total number of passengers using the stopping point is similar to that of the general passengers, while it is different from the numbers of transit passengers and teen riding-and-transit passengers. Data-centric infographics visualization, unlike existing infographics that is pronounced only as a visual role, is expected to be used as a tool for scientific research as well as efficiently delivering data.

  • Various forms of visual representations enable scientific discovery and scientific reasoning when scientists conduct research. Similarly, in science education, visual representations are important as a means to promote students' understanding of science concepts and scientific thinking skills. To provide a framework that could facilitate the effective use of visual representations in science classroom and systemic science education research, a visual representation competence taxonomy (VRC-T) was developed in this study. VRC-T includes two dimensions: the type of visual representation, and the cognitive process of visual representation. The initial categories for each dimension were developed based on literature review. Then validation and revision was made by conducting teachers' workshop and survey to experts. The types of visual representations were grouped into 3 categories (descriptive, procedural, and explanative representations) and the cognitive processes were grouped into 3 categories (interpretation, integration, and construction). The sub categories of each dimension and the validation process would be explained in detail.

  • There have been increased interests in information visualization. Information visualization has been considered as a way to summarize textual data so that the users can access large amount of data more efficiently and effectively. However, many information visualization techniques stem from scientific visualization techniques, which might be difficult for the regular users to understand. More importantly, the system models used by most of the information visualization techniques do not have real world counterpart. For example, most of the users do not represent or process the textual data in terms of fisheye view or a topological map. This means that there is no affordance on the current information visualization systems from the users point of view. In this paper, we analyzed this problem by using the user interface design principles to point out what lacks in the current information visualization systems. More specifically, we have applied Nielson's Heuristic Evaluation technique to review four representative information visualization techniques. The analysis results confirmed our original hypothesis on why the current information visualization systems are not part of the mainstream information systems. Finally, we suggested to invest more efforts in improving the currently prevalent and familiar bullet list type textual information presentation method based on the usability studies and the intelligent content analysis.

  • Flipped learning can be used as an innovative teaching method in science education. This study analyzes video clip produced by pre-service elementary school teachers for flipped learning and explore strategies to organize effective visualization. The pre-service elementary school teachers focused on providing information on macroscopic natural phenomenon using concrete case selection strategy for earth science class. They used marker and spatial transformation elements effectively, but their efforts to link the elements to the experience of students were not sufficient. In addition, it was very rare to put the contents into simplified drawing or provide extreme cases to enhance the imagery of students. In addition, it is necessary to provide specific case of multi-modal and link the material to the experience of students closely through familiar cases or analogical model to establish an effective visual teaching material. It may also be needed to present simplified drawing for enhancing imagery and provide extreme cases to make students have an opportunity to infer a new situation.
