  • We have examined the perception of teachers and students in elementary schools toward the frontier science and analyzed corresponding contents in science textbooks in Korea and the U. S. in order to promote a good guidance for the frontier science education. We prepared separate questionnaires for teachers and children, respectively, and analyzed the responses obtained from 244 teachers and 1,000 students in five elementary schools. For the analysis of how to introduce the frontier science, we investigated textbooks such as Science, Society and Practical Arts of Korean elementary school, and an American science textbook published by Scott Foresman. This study revealed that teachers are well aware of the importance of the frontier science, however, they are inactive in conducting the subject in class rooms because of their insufficient scientific knowledge and poor environment for teaching. It has been found that children had strong interest in the frontier science, however, opportunities to learn the topic are not properly provided. The frontier science m the American science textbook turned out to be more systematically introduced than that in Korean ones.

  • In this study, we analyzed elementary school teachers' self-diagnosis on their competency for assessment in science. A questionnaire was administered to 217 elementary school teachers and in-depth group interviews with 6 teachers were also conducted. The results revealed that the mean scores of five subcategories, 'choosing assessment methods', 'developing assessment instruments', 'administering, scoring, and grading', 'analyzing, interpreting, using, and communicating assessment results', and 'recognizing ethics in assessment', were 3.82, 3.50, 3.92, 3.76, and 4.09 on a scale of 5 points, respectively. Teachers having more teaching experience showed higher mean scores in all subcategories. However, only the teachers having more than 20 years of teaching experience were statistically better than those having less than 5 years of teaching experience in four subcategories except for 'recognizing ethics in assessment'. There were no significant differences in terms of major, whereas the mean scores of the teachers having master's degree were statistically higher than their counterpart in some subcategories. In addition, the teachers who had completed training for assessment exhibited statistically higher mean scores than their counterpart in four subcategories except for 'recognizing ethics in assessment'. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different types of texts, which were narrative and expository, on the understanding of content. Elementary students' perceptions of the two types of the texts were also investigated. In the comparison of the effects on the understanding of the text contents, test scores of mind-mapping, closed-answer question, and essay test were used. The analyses of mind-mapping tests showed narrative text was more effective to figure out main concepts of the text throughout the mind-mapping test. But expository text was more effective in the hierarchical organization of the concepts. In the closed-answer questions and essay test, narrative text was more effective than expository text. However when the contents of text were difficult and complex, there was no meaningful difference between the two types of texts. The analyses of students' perceptions of the texts showed that narrative texts were preferred. Students perceived that the narrative text was more interesting and familiar. However, the perceptions of helpful text for their science learning were not different by the types of texts.

  • In this study, a part of high school science instructional materials is evaluated by Instructional Quality Profile(IQP) based on the Merrill's Component Display Theory(CDT). The CDT is based on the Gagne assumption of different conditions of learning for different outcomes. The IQP enables the user to check both the consistency and adequacy of existing cognitive instruction. The IQP can be used to predict student performance, and also to design and develop new insturctional materials. The instructional components are classified according to 5 task levels; An Use-Generalities on Newly Encountered Examples(UGeg), A Remember-Paraphrased -Generalities (RpG), A Remember-Verbatim-Generalities (RvG), A Remember-Paraphrased -Examples (Rpeg), A Remember-Verbatim-Examples(Rveg). And the instructional presentations are classified according to 4 levels: Explain Generalities(EG), Explain examples(Eeg), Inquiry Generalities(IG), Inquiry examples(Ieg). The instructional presentations are determined by instructional components of a related test item, and indexes of the presentation adequacy are calculated by the instructional presentations. The indexes of this study(0.17 - 0.44) were very low and it indicates that the instructional presentations were not adequate to the instructional components of the related text item.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop appropriate science teaching models which can be applied effectively to relevant situations. Five science teaching models; cognitive conflict teaching models, generative teaching model, learning cycle teaching model, hypothesis verification teaching model and discovery teaching model, were identified from the existing models. The teaching models were modified and in primary and secondary students using a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. Major findings of this study were as follows: 1. For teaching science concepts, three teaching models were found more effective; cognitive conflict teaching model, generative teaching model and discovery teaching model. 2. For teaching inquiry skills, two teaching models were found more effective; learning cycle teaching model and hypothesis verification teaching model. 3. For teaching scientific attitudes, two teaching models were found more effective; learning cycle teaching models and discovery teaching model. Each teaching model requires specific learning environment. It is strongly suggested that teachers should select a suitable teaching model carefully after evaluating the learning environment including teacher and student variables, learning objectives and curricular materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the problem of teachers' narrative reporting of children's science learning in elementary school report cards. For the purposes of this study, a questionnaire, comprised of 6 questions and an analysis tool (Cronbach's $\alpha=.70$) were developed to categorize the answers. The survey was conducted by 53 teachers, who are currently taking 5th ade in elementary school, and the results are as follows: First, they interpreted the same content of report cards in a variety of different ways. Second, they exhibited a number of different principles and criteria in terms of preparing the content of narrative report cards. Third, they experienced difficulties in preparing narrative report cards on science teaming which required explanation of complete processes. Fourth, most teachers surveyed answered that the content of their narrative reports on science learning did not communicate specifically the students' achievement and further studies. Fifth, the activities related to preparing the content of the science learning on narrative reports was widely perceived to be useless for teachers' professional development. Finally, teachers made a number of alternative proposals to overcome the current, perceived problems of teachers' narrative reporting for children's science learning in report cards. Based on the results of this analysis, alternative forms and content of narrative reports on science learning were discussed.

  • The purpose of this research is to minimize the learning deficiency on science subject in changeover from the 7th education curriculum to the next curriculum which was noticed in 2007. We investigated the contents overlapped or omitted in science contents organization between the two curriculums; moved contents to upper or lower grade, deleted contents, enlarged contents and reduced contents. Also we found that the deficiency will be occurred for the students who entered school in 2006 and 2007 in elementary school. To minimize the learning deficiency in the changeover, we must consider the following points. (1) We need to promote the teachers' comprehension about the learning deficiency and supplementary instruction through the teacher training program before carrying out the next curriculum. (2) We must add the measures minimizing the learning deficiency to the teachers' guide and resources which are used in encouragement of learning and teachers' training. (3) We must develop the instructing materials to supplement the learning deficiency for the students who entered school in 2006 and 2007. As practicing above points, we will be able to reduce time loss in studying and teaching the same contents and to supplement the omitted contents.
