  • This study expects to understand Korean girls' weaknesses in science achievement and to make suggestions for improvement. The analyses of 95 released items in TIMSS 2003 show that Korean girls had few difficulties in 'inference and analysis', 'very hard or very easy' items, 'previously-learned' items, and items presented in context of 'school science'. They achieved lower in items of understanding science concept or factual knowledge. Inference and analysis items, which were favorable to girls, worked unfavorably to them as case science knowledge intervened. Girls outperformed boys in items with 80% or more and with 20% or less percent correct. Also, the boys showed much higher achievement in previously learned and contextualized items, which proves girls' lack of interest in science in everyday life. On the base of item analysis, several suggestions were made for the girl-inclusive science education in Korea: First, girls should have more opportunities for science experience not only in school context but also in everyday life. Second, more teaching and learning programs should be developed to care girls' weaknesses in science learning. Lastly, gender issues in science education should be actively included in curriculum development process and teacher training programs.

  • Existing methodologies of technology planning about promising new technology focused on target technology itself, so it is true that socio-environmental context which the relevant technology has influence on is not well understood. In this respect, this study is aimed to questingly examine that news content analysis methodologies widely available in the field of science communication can be applied as a complementary methodology for contextual understanding of socio-environment in terms of technology planning about promising new technology. In the co-evolutionary environment of technology-society, promising new technology shows hype phenomenon regarding the relation with the society. Based on this, this study performed news content analysis and examined if the consequences of analysis would match hype cycle. It tried to explore substantive content understanding by socio-environment factors according to specific news frame content. To do this, new content analysis was performed targeting cloud computing as a representative promising new technology. The result of news content analysis targeting general newspapers, business news, IT special newspapers revealed that the tendency of news reporting matched the trend of hype cycle. Particularly, it was verified that reporting attitude and news frame analysis provided useful information to understand contextual content depending on social, economic, and cultural environment factors about promising new technology. The results of this study implied that news content analysis could overcome the limitation of technology information analysis focusing on academic journal patent usually applied for technology planning and could be used as a complementary methodology for understanding the context depending on macro-environment factors. In conclusion, application of news content analysis on the phase of macro-environment analysis of technology planning could contribute to the securement of mutually balanced view in the co-evolutionary perspective of technology-society.

  • In Korean Studies, there have been made many studies for finding the identity as the intrinsic academic field, because the Korean studies have complex intertwined characteristics with other fields. However, previous related studies have been mostly focused on the qualitative content analysis method related to the major Korean Studies, the study applying the bibliometric method was not conducted. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to draw intellectual structures about the domestic and overseas Korean studies academic papers applying the bibliometric methods, and to analyze content of intellectual structures by focus group interview (FGI). As the result of this study, the intellectual structure in the domestic Korean Studies had the characteristics of the Humanities, and the intellectual structure in the foreign Korean Studies had the characteristics of the Social Sciences. Also, the domestic Korean Studies encompassed a wide range of period from ancient to modern times, while the foreign Korean Studies focused on a modern and contemporary times. This study has a significance in the way that it is the first study to draw the intellectual structures in the domestic and foreign Korean Studies applying the bibliometric method, and then to carry out the comprehensive analysis through FGI with specialists in Korean Studies. However, in order to do more meaningful one-to-one comparison studies about the field of the domestic and foreign Korean Studies, many follow-up co-studies reflecting diverse opinions of many researchers in Korean Studies will be necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the teaching professionalism of the two teachers for secondary science-gifted students in perspective of teaching orientations. Both teachers have been taught biology to secondary science-gifted students for more than six years and they have received in-service training in gifted education. Teachers' orientations were investigated through in-depth interviews and observing lessons. For the data collection, videotapes were recorded during two lessons and two in-depth interviews for each participant were conducted. All recorded data were carefully transcribed and analyzed. Some unique characteristics of teaching were identified from the class instruction of each participant. Both teachers revealed 'Open Inquiry' orientation. This was reflected by their educational goals and beliefs that they should help science-gifted students to grow themselves as scientists by enhancing their inquisitiveness and creative problem solving ability. However, each teacher had shown different teaching orientations such as 'Academic Rigor' and 'Discovery' that seemed to have influence on the level or the range of subject matter covered in the classes. Teachers' science teaching orientations have been changed by their subject of teaching and their experiences in teaching the gifted. In the process, teachers' educational philosophy about gifted education plays an important role in teaching orientation. Based on the ongoing teachers' efforts for enhancing his/her professionalism, the teachers seemed to critically review theoretical knowledge of the science teachers in gifted education through self-reflection on their own teaching methods. When teacher's educational philosophy about gifted education was established and internalized, science teaching orientations in teaching practice seemed to be consistent with his/her goal of teaching.

  • Misconceptions are one of the most important and long-lasting studied themes on science education. It is because their nature is obstinate and settled as well as they corrupt students' understanding of science concepts. This study examines whether preservice elementary school teachers enrolled in biology teaching material research course changed positively on science teaching efficacy and correcting life science misconceptions when they used the handbook developed for this study. The handbook comprises 203 life science concepts surveyed among preservice teachers holding from advanced researches and arranged by 2007 Revised Science Curriculum. 107 preservice elementary school teachers participated in the study. Forty-six (46) of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 61 to the control group. ANOVA was conducted for analyzing data. Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) and the life science misconception test which was developed for this study, were administrated as assessing instruments for pretest and posttest. The experimental group, using the handbook, acquired higher scores in both tests on statistical significance level than the control group who were not using the handbook. The results indicate the handbook developed for correcting life science misconceptions for this study is effective in enhancing science teaching efficacy and correcting life science misconceptions.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the school science high achievers' achievements in enrichment physics, logical thinking level, and to analyze the relationship between logical thinking level and the achievement in enrichment physics of high achievers in science. The subjects were 357th and 8th graders who achieved highly in school science. To assess their achievements in enrichment physics, we developed a new test consisting of descriptive problems which were based on middle school curriculum. Those problems require one or two steps of thinking process, not simple knowledge of science. To assess logical thinking level, we used the instrument called GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking) developed by Roadranka et al. The results showed that the school science high achievers' average achievement in enrichment physics was low, 56.3 out of 150, which indicated that they had not done much of enrichment learning beyond middle school science curriculum. Just only 54% of the school science high achievers are in formal logical thinking level. From the analysis of relationship between their logical thinking level and the achievement in enrichment physics, the value of the correlation coefficient was 0.174, which means that they are not almost correlated. Therefore, it is not desirable to judge science gifted children just from achievement in school science or enrichment physics, so both(logical thinking and the achievement in enrichment physics) tests should be taken for selecting gifted student.
