The accurate evaluation of settlement is important to every steps in the constructions involving soft soils. Relating with those constructions, especially, it has been emphasized recently that the influnce of secondary settlement is important. The ratio of $C_a/C_c$ and the surcharging tests can be applied collaboratively to predicting and reducing secondary consolidation. A series of incremental loading consolidation test and surcharging tests for undisturbed samples of Kunsan clay were performed in this study. As a result of the tests, the ratio of $C_a/C_c$ for the clay was found to be 0.0329. Also, the relationship between void ratio and $t/t_p$ was shown to be linear. Accordingly, the secondary compression index, $C_a for a long term loading had a constant value regardless of time. When the total surcharge ratio was 0.4 and the dissipation ratio of excessive porewater pressure was in the range from 80% to 100%, secondary settlement was effectively reduced for Kunsan clay.

Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of a single pile to open face tunnelling in stiff clay. Several key factors such as tunnelling-induced ground and pile settlement, and shear transfer mechanism have been studied in detail. Tunnelling resulted in the development of pile settlement larger than the Greenfield soil surface settlement. In addition, due to changes in the shear transfer between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. The apparent allowable pile capacity was reduced up to about 30% due to the development of tunnelling-induced pile head settlement. The skin friction on the pile was increased with tunnel advancement associated with the changes of soil stresses and ground deformation and hence axial pile force distribution was reduced. Maximum tunnelling-induced tensile force on the pile was about 21% of the designed pile capacity. The zone of influence on the pile behaviour in the longitudinal direction may be identified as ${\pm}1$-2D (D: tunnel diameter) from the pile centre (behind and ahead of the pile axis in the longitudinal direction) based on the analysis conditions assumed in the current study. Negative excess pore pressure was mobilised near the pile tip, while positive excess pore pressure was computed at the upper part of the pile. It has been found that the serviceability of a pile experiencing adjacent tunnelling is more affected by pile settlement than axial pile force changes.
Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests proposed by one of the authors, cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from cyclic and post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for cyclic and post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils and initial static shear stress (ISSS) was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) liquefaction strength ratio of fine-grained soils decreases with decreasing plasticity index and increasing ISSS; (ii) plasticity index and ISSS did not markedly influence relation between equivalent cyclic stiffness and shear strain relations; (iii) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less the strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalcies excess pore water pressure (NEPWP); (iv) stiffness ratio of plastic silt has large activity decrease rapidly with increasing excess pore water pressure; and (v) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.
This paper is performed to examine the effect of creep during the primary consolidation and the applicability of the Yin's EVP (Elasto-Visco-Plastic) model. In ordinary consolidation theories using the elastic model, the primary consolidation process can be expressed but the secondary consolidation process cannot. It is due to the viscosity, which can express the secondary consolidation, and is sometimes related to the scale effect (difference of the thickness of clay layer between laboratory sample and field condition) such as hypotheses Type A and Type B shown by Ladd et al. (1977). Usually, the existence of the creep during the primary consolidation has been conformed and the Type B is well acceped. On the other hand, from the large-scaled consolidation tests the intermediate characteristic between Type A and Type B was proposed as Type C by Aboshi (1973). In this study, to clarify the effect of creep on the settlement-time relation during the primary consolidation in detail, Type B consolidation tests were performed using the separate-type consolidation test apparatus for a peat and clay. Then the test results were analyzed by using Yin's EVP Model (Yin and Graham, 1994). In conclusion, followings were obtained. At the end of primary consolidation, the compression for the subspecimens should not be the same because of the difference of the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate. And the average settlement measured by the separate-type consolidometer coincides with the analyzed one using the Yin's EVP model. As for the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure, however, the measured excess pore water pressure dissipates faster compared with the Yin's model.
The Gangneung region has an environment suitable for the formation of organic soil, and there is an alluvial layer in which sedimentary sand layers are distributed on the upper and lower parts of the organic soil. In order to evaluate the seismic safety of the railway roadbed passing through the Gangneung area, a railway roadbed and ground model considering the similarity ratio was fabricated, a shaking table test was conducted, and the seismic stability was evaluated by comparing the effective stress analysis results. The applied seismic waves were artificial seismic waves, Gyeongju seismic waves, Borah seismic waves, Nahanni seismic waves, and Tabas seismic waves. It became. Due to the ground reinforcement effect by jet grouting applied to the lower ground of the new roadbed, the displacement of the new roadbed was found to be reduced from a minimum of 33.7% to a maximum of 56.7% compared to the existing roadbed. The shaking table test results were verified by effective stress analysis using the Finn model of the Flac program, and showed a similar trend to the shaking table test values.
For a deltaic clay in the mouth of the Nakdong river, OCR was investigated through methods using the results of field measurement, laboratory and field soil tests. As a result, OCRs were obtained around the range of 0.95 to 1.20 by analysis of field measurements, although they were estimated around the values of 0.4 to 0.7 by the results of conventional consolidation tests for the clay. From the dissipation test it was found out that the excess pore pressures scarcely existed in the clay deposit and then the soil was not in the underconsolidated condition. And the OCRs obtained through methods of Mayne(1991) and Cao et al(1996) using the piezocone test and of Mayne & Kemper(1988) using the cone penetration test were in good agreement with those of field measurement.
In order to ensure the stability of reinforced structures backfilled with low permeability soil, it is very important to determine the change in undrained pullout capacity compared to drained pullout capacity prior to design. In this research, a series of numerical analyses on laboratory pullout tests have been performed on different materials (clean sand, 5, 10, and 15% silty sand), different overburden pressures (30, 100 and 200 kPa), and different drainage conditions (drained and undrained) in order to compare drained pullout capacity with undrained pullout capacity. The results of numerical analysis also have been compared with the results of the laboratory pullout tests. The analysis results show that both drained and undrained pullout capacity are influenced by silt contents and increase with increase of friction angle of the soil and overburden pressure. In undrained condition, the effective stresses acting on the reinforcement decrease as excessive pore pressures are generated, resulting in decrease in pullout capacity; 57% for 30 kPa, and 70% for 100 and 200 kPa. These results show a good agreement with the results of the laboratory pullout tests performed under the same condition.

In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has usually been applied. SCP-reinforced ground is composite soil which consists of the sand pile and the surrounding soft soil. One of main important considerations in design and analysis for SCP-reinforced soils is stress concentration ratio according to area replacement ratio. In this paper, the numerical analysis was conducted to investigate characteristics of stress concentration ratio in composite ground. It was found that stress concentration ratio of composite ground is not constant as well as depends on several factors such as area replacement ratio, depth of soft soil, and consolidation process. The values of stress concentration ratio increase during loading stage due to stress transfer of composite soil, and reach up to 2.5∼12 according to area replacement ratio at the end of construction. After the end of consolidation, however, these values are converged to 2.5 to 6.0 irrespective of area replacement ratio due to increase in effective stress of soft soil during consolidation process.
In situ clay soils with Ko condition have anisotropic characteristics, varying the response according to the principal stress direction upon loading. But because of their practicality and simplicity, consolidated isotropic undrained compression tests are commonly used in practice to determine the behavior of cohesive soils. In this study to investigate the anisotropic characteristics and the effects of consolidation stress states on the response of normally consolidated clay soils during shearing, triaxial compression and extension tests after consolidating the undisturbed clay soil samples, which are obtained as a block sample to normalized consolidation states under isotropic or Ko state, were carried out. As a result of tests, the anisotropy of the undrained strength was confirmed. Comparing the soil responses between isotropic and Ko consolidation, the undrained strength by isotropic consolidation is overestimated because of its higher mean consolidation pressure. And isotropic consolidation reduces the anisotropy of soil response and influences on the stress-strain behavior and pore pressure response because the animotropic soil structure is partially collapsed during isotropic consolidation process. Also, OCR in overconsolidated soils is decreased by isotropic consolidatiorL Friction angle in eztension is higher than that in compression, but regression analysis shows that friction angle with cohesion in extension is almost the same as that without cohesion in compresslon.
This research, in order to study the effects of initial shear stress of anisotropically consolidated sand that has 0.558% fines, performed several undrained static and dynamic triaxial test. To simulate the real field conditions, loose and dense samples were prepared. Besides, the cyclic shear strength of Nakdong River sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress, stress path, pore water pressure and residual strength relationship was studied. By using Bolton's theory, peak internal friction angle at failure which has considerable effects on the relative density and mean effective stress was determined. In p'- q diagram, the phase transformation line moves closer to the failure line as the specimen's initial anistropical consolidation stress increases. Loose sands were more affected than dense sands. The increase of consolidation stress ratio from 1.4 to 1.8 had an effect on liquefaction resistance strength resulting from the increase of relativity density, and showed similar CSR values in dense specimen condition.
