  • An experiment study of the dendrite growth of ice crystals growing in quiescent pure subcooled water was made at small subcoolings of 0.035 K < ${\Delta}T$ < 1.000 K. It was observed that the growth kinetics and morphology are functions of not only subcooling but also thermal convection. When the subcooling is less than 0.35K, it was found that effect of thermal convection on growth kinetics of ice dendrites becomes important. Quantitiative measurements of growth velocity, $V_{G}$, and tip radii of the edge and basal planes, $R_{1}$ and $R_{2}$, were made simultaneously as a function of subcooling.

  • In this study, from January 2006 to February 2009, we observed 107 ice spikes formed in a natural state, and analyzed their environment. We developed an experimental device to reproduce ice spikes in laboratory and successfully made 531 ice spikes. We analyzed the process of the formation and the principle of how those ice spikes grow through videotaped data of the formation in the experiment. In the natural world, when the surface of water and the lower part of a vessel begin to freeze, a vent (breathing hole) develops at the surface where an ice is not frozen; this vent serves as the seed of an ice spike. It is assumed that the volume expansion of ice in the vessel which occurs when water freezes makes the supercooled water go upward through the vent and becomes an ice bar called an ice spike. In the laboratory, however, when distilled water is poured into an ice tray cube and kept in the experimental device for about one and a half hours at a temperature of -12- $-13^{\circ}C$, a thin layer of ice then begins to develop on the surface of the water, the vent is formed, and ice spikes form for about 10-30 minutes. These spikes stop growing when the end becomes clogged. Ice spikes can be described as falling into seven categories of shape, with the apex type topping the list followed by the slant type in the natural state and the vertical type predominating in the laboratory.

  • Test of liquid oxygen sub-cooling by helium injection, which is one of the method of temperature conditioning of cryogenic propellant in liquid propulsion rocket, is performed. The sub-cooling effect at different He injection flow rate with the same initial liquid oxygen mass is compared. Test results showed liquid oxygen temperature decrease of $5\sim6^{\circ}C$ under test condition. And the required time for cooling is inversely proportional to He injection flow rate.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of ground-based glaciogenic seeding on orographic clouds in the Daegwallyeong area on 13 March, 2013. The experiments was conducted by releasing silver iodide (AgI) under following conditions: surface temperature below $-4^{\circ}C$, wind direction between 45 and $130^{\circ}$, and wind speed less than $5ms^{-1}$. Two seeding rates, $38gh^{-1}$ (SR1) and $113gh^{-1}$ (SR2), were tested to obtain an appropriate AgI ratio for snowfall enhancement in the Daegwallyeong area. Numerical simulations were carried out by using the WRF (Weather Research and Forecast) model with AgI point-source module which predicted dispersion fields of AgI particles. The results indicated that the target orographic clouds contained adequate amount of supercooled liquid water and that the dispersion of AgI particles tended to move along the prevailing wind direction. To validate the seeding effects, the observation data from FM-120 and MPS as well as PARSIVEL disdrometer were analyzed. In this case study, glaciogenic seeding significantly increased the concentration of small ice particles below 1 mm in diameter. The observation results suggest that SR1 seeding be reasonable to use the ground-based seeding in the Daegwallyeong area.

  • This study was performed to determine the rapid thawing method for reducing the thawing time of frozen pork loins and to examine the effects of supercooling on the microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory qualities of fresh and frozen-thawed pork during storage at -1.5, 4, and $15^{\circ}C$. Forced-air thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ was the most time-consuming process, whereas radio frequency thawing time was the shortest by dielectric heating. The supercooling storage temperature was chosen to be $-1.5^{\circ}C$ because microstructural damages were not observed in the pork sample after cooling at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Fresh or frozen-thawed pork loins stored at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ had lower drip loss and total volatile base nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance, and Hunter b* levels than loins stored at 4 and $15^{\circ}C$. In addition, the least degree of increase in preexisting microorganisms counts of the fresh or frozen-thawed pork loin samples was obtained during supercooled storage at $-1.5^{\circ}C$. Sensory quality results of fresh and frozen-thawed pork loin samples stored at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ showed higher scores than the samples stored at 4 and $15^{\circ}C$. These data indicate that supercooling at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ in the meat processing industry would be effective for maintaining the quality of pork meats without ice crystal nucleation and formation.

  • Weather modification research has been actively performed worldwide, but a technology that can more quantitatively prove the research effects are needed. In this study, the seeding effect, the efficiency of precipitation enhancement in weather modification experiment, was verified using the radar data. Also, the effects of seeding material on hydrometeor change was analyzed. For this, radar data, weather conditions, and numerical simulation data for diffusion were applied. First, a method to analyze the seeding effect in three steps was proposed: before seeding, during seeding, and after seeding. The proposed method was applied to three cases of weather modification experiments conducted in Gangwon-do and the West Sea regions. As a result, when there is no natural precipitation, the radar reflectivity detected in the area where precipitation change is expected was determined as the seeding effect. When natural precipitation occurs, the seeding effect was determined by excluding the effect of natural precipitation from the maximum reflectivity detected. For the application results, it was found that the precipitation intensity increased by 0.1 mm/h through the seeding effect. In addition, it was confirmed that ice crystals, supercooled water droplets, and mixed-phase precipitation were distributed in the seeding cloud. The results of these weather modification research can be used to secure water resources as well as for future study of cloud physics.

  • Under SLD conditions, due to the large size of droplets, physical phenomena such as wall-droplet interaction and deformation have a significant effect on the icing process. Accordingly, many studies have been conducted in order to computationally simulate SLD effects. As one of the efforts, post-processing method have been proposed to describe wall-droplet interaction effect, which modified collection efficiency using Wright model. However, since the model doesn't properly consider the wall condition, it still overestimated collection efficiency and impingement limit. To solve this problem, impingement areas were divided into 3 different regions, and the post-processing method was introduced with the new wall-droplet interaction model developed based on Bai and Gosman rebound model. In order to consider the effect of deformation, the most suitable model was selected by comparing the deformation models used in the various icing codes. As a result, the modified post-processing method showed improved accuracy in predicting the impingement limits and collection efficiency by further estimating mass flux loss due to rebound, and it was observed that the result was the closest to the experimental data when the deformation effect was included by using Wiegand model.

  • This study is investigated the cooling characteristics of the TMA clathrate compound including TMA (Tri-methyl-amine, (CH₃)₃N) of 20~25 wt% as a low temperature storage material at -5℃ heat source. The results showed that as the concentration of TMA is increased, phase change temperature and specific heat are increased, but the supercooling and retention time of liquid phase are decreased. Especially, low temperature storage material containing TMA 25 wt% has the average of phase change temperature of 5.8℃, supercooling of 8.0℃, retention time of liquid phase for 10 minutes and specific heat of 4.099 kJ/kg℃ in the cooling process. From the results of this study, TMA clathrate compound showed higher phase change temperature than water md supercooling repression effect.
