This study is to explore the characteristics and trends of the interior design of the residence area of the cruise ships. The interior of the cruise ships running three Asian countries - Korea, Japan and China was analyzed to understand the design of the public area and the cabin area. The interior of the ships showed the modern, high-tech style with their unique concept. Also, the feeling of the openness was emphasized in two ways- the visual and psychological expression and the spatial application. The contrast of color and the effect of artificial lighting used to express the extended feeling of the closed space inside the cruise ship. The results are expected to contribute to understand the interior design of the worldwide cruise ship and be used as a valuable data for the development of the interior design of the cruise ship.

The study was intended to evaluate common spaces of office building in view point of universal design. The common spaces were access road, main entrance, parking lot, corridor, and restroom. Two office buildings in Centum city of Busan were evaluated by their workers, each 100 ones. The check list for evaluating them consisted of 36 universal design elements which related to five common spaces. First, there were many universal design elements which need to be improved. Second, among five common spaces, restroom has the most elements to be rated low. First of all, at least one restroom for wheelchair should be provided each floor. Third, even though both of two office buildings were recently built, there were significant difference between their users' evaluations. This implies that the concept of universal design is not applied to office buildings well. Fourth, there were significant difference among users' evaluations according to age, especially in case of design related elements. This means that users' age is an important factor to be considered.

Modern public library is expanding its role as generalized cultural facility. Therefore public library that has comfortable and physical environment for various age and various users are needed. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the application of universal design in common space of public library, and trying to suggest environmental improvement plan that various users could comfortably use the library based on its data. The scope of this research were adjusted as 8 public libraries located in Seoul and metropolitan area of Seoul. Spacial scope that was set of this research was common space of public library and scope of content was about application of universal design. As a result of the research, first, the application of universal design toward common space of public library were appeared as low. Second, constant management and application development of universal design is needed. Third, as roles and functions of public library become various from now on, application of delicate universal design is needed for intention of users.

The Universal Design is introduced as the universal principle to satisfy people's requirements for various environment. The public space of general hospitals should be designed with consideration of specific requirements of customers. The purpose of our research is to develop and propose the Universal Design checklist which considers the circulation in the public space. We investigated that the consideration for universal design was lacked by actual survey with the checklist made according to 'The law for improving convenience of the disabled, old people and pregnant women'. Furthermore, we found the problems of the checklist. We correct the checklist considering the measurements of the user's body and action. In addition, we propose the Universal Design Checklist by adding the new references in the article about the installation.

Architectural design of general hospitals is progressing in the aspects of themes and concepts of design. This study aims to develope an overview of communal space design in general hospitals by analysing design compositions and themes and concepts involved in them. Organizational prototypes for communal space networks in existing hospitals are summariged for the result of this analysis, and concentration/distribution of communal spaces and hospital communications within communal spaces are included in the analysis.

A public space of the general hospitals is for the patron, especially handicapped patrons, the aged, and pregnant women. Therefore, it should be designed with consideration of the users' specific requirements for the environment. The Universal Design has been introduced as the general design principle which satisfies the users' specific requirements for the environment. The main object of this study is to propose the universal design checklist of the general space for the medical space which guarantees the patients' comfort livings without the restriction of the physical environment. The general space is determined according to the orthopedic surgery outpatients' movements in the domestic general hospital. Based on the criteria set by the law, we visited the general hospitals located in Seoul and did on-the-spot research. In this paper, we analyze the present situation and the problems of the general hospitals and propose the Universal Design Checklist.

The age and physical condition of users who use public libraries are becoming diverse in recent years. The need for universal design is recognized as important to create a public library with a convenient and pleasant environment in consideration of various users. The purpose of this research is to propose the universal design application method after analyzing level of application of common spaces in public libraries. First, the environment related to 'Perceptable Information' with low level of universal design should be improved first. Second, it is important to apply it from the initial planning phase to create a more advanced universal design environment. Third, careful consideration and awareness of all users of the library should precede to engance 'Flexibility in Use' related environment.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the daily living activities of the elderly with dementia and user oriented spatial needs of the staff in the common space of nursing home in Japan. Data was taken from six units of the 2 skilled facilities. The results revealed as follows; 4 types of elderly activities were founded, and physical environmental characteristics affected residents' space usage. And it was perceived like as living oriented space, social interaction space, facility space, staff oriented space. Conclusively it was suggested to plan dining space as semi-private space, day corner as semi-public space.

Aging society appears immediate social problem in Korea. Housing for aging is required independent and comfortable housing life to live considering about feature of elderly. It is necessary field to prepare. Aged person who suffers the aging process several stages gets changing weak, so living environment is important aging person aspect of social, psychological and physical point. Finally, aged person living together requires facilities for the naturally communicating and active things. Community of aged person required organization of space for keeping independence and connection with each other. According to space of community, housing for aging should have a different access route. In conclusion, congregate housing of the elderly should be planed organization of space to be solved anxiety and tension and to be aware of joining the community.
