  • There are three major processes to impact the groundwater flow near underground storage caverns in the coastal area; effect of topography, effect of sea water intrusion, and effect of excavation. In this paper, the effects of three items were numerically studied to identify the major cause for altering the flow pattern. It turned out that the excavation is the most significant effect on the groundwater flow system. The groundwater pressure distributions and consequent groundwater pathways were significantly altered near the openings. By increasing the groundwater pressures from water curtain holes, the potential leakage of storage cavern was properly prevented

  • The present study aims at investigating the effectiveness of a new passive cavity flow control technique, sub-cavity. The characteristics of cavity flow oscillation with the device are compared with those with other control techniques tested previously, including a triangular bump and blowing jet. In the computation, the three-dimensional, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations governing the supersonic cavity flow are solved based on an implicit finite volume scheme spatially and multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme temporally. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The present results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations, and the amplitude of the pressure oscillation can be reduced in the presence of a sub-cavity.

  • This paper presents the delivered power and reflection coefficient in metallic shielding enclosure excited by the interior source, which are evaluated with the method of moments, and describes a method for reducing the radiation of electromagnetic fields in the cavity by putting lossy dielectric material in one inside wall. In this paper we introduce carbon polystyrene-foam as lossy dielectric material and observe it's effects of reduction when the thickness and permittivity of lossy dielectric material are changed. The results show that the reduction of the electromagnetic radiation can be achieved by controlling the amount of carbon in lossy dielectric material. The theoretical analysis is verified by the measured delivered power.

  • The cryogenic fluid is the propellant for the liquid rocket engine. The design of space launcher vehicle is guided by minimum size and weight criteria, so the turbo pump solicits high impeller speed. Such high speed results in a zone of pressure drop below vapor pressure causing caivtation around inducer blades. The cryogenic fluid has different characters from isothermal fluid like water. The cryogenic fluid has very sensible thermodynamic properties and the phase change undergoes evaporative cooling. So, the developed code has to be modified cavitation modeling and it is added the energy equation for temperature sensitivity.

  • The ground cavity occurring in the downtown area is on the increase. However, when ground subsidence is occurred or a cavity that causes it to occur is found, time and economic difficulties are follwed in recovery. In advance, this study conducted to develop filling system for reinforcement material which is consist of polymer pouch and admixture as a new filler material. We developed a polymer pouch that is water soluble in the precedent study. Since the filling system is trenchless method and don't need any plant, it has time and economic benefits. This system uses air pressure to filling out cavity in a short time. We estimate this system with respect to filling speed and filling ratio by model experiment. In addition, we could confirm various filling condition using DEM Analysis. So, we could develop filling system and analysis it.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of an efficient multi-point multimedia conference system using IP grouping. Existing multi-point multimedia conference systems are difficult for multi-user to perform efficient cooperation due to bandwidth limitation for data transmission of video, audio and documentation. In the case that multi-user uses limited bandwidth, smooth cooperation does not accomplish due to transmission delay for the real-time transmission of image and speech data. A hybrid transfer method which is mixed with distributed and centralized methods is used for smooth cooperation, and the network bandwidth is reduced by forming multi-user conference systems of IP grouping in this paper. Also, adaptive image frame variations are used to solve bottleneck effect according to the number of users. An efficient multi-user conference system is designed to support audio quality.

  • Developed ground cavity due to leakage of decrepit old sewer pipe causes ground surface settlement and brittle fracture of pavement. Recently, for 5 years, frequency of occurrence of ground subsidence phenomenon tends to increase rapidly and/or steadily. It is difficult to investigate ground surface settlement and/or subsidence in urban area because most ground surfaces are covered with asphalt or concrete pavement. In this research, therefore, ground surface settlement, influence zone and settlement of sewer pipe were analyzed using finite element method. Not only reinforced effect of pseudo-plastic backfill that is applied to prevent ground surface settlement or subsidence spot, was compared and analyzed using numerical analysis program, but also direct shear test was carried out to determine strength parameters of pseudo-plastic backfill.

  • The prototypical building energy model is very useful in building energy policies, research, and technology development. A prototypical apartment model for detailed energy analysis was proposed by Seo et al. in 2014, but sufficient verification was not possible due to the lack of reliable measurement data in predicting the model's energy consumption. However, verification is now possible thanks to a recent study that analyzed the Household Energy Panel Survey (HEPS) data that is released annually by the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) and published apartment complex benchmark data. The data was used to calibrate the prototypical apartment energy model located in the central region and constructed between 1990 and 1999. The calibrated model was used to verify the other apartment building groups with respect to region and year of completion. Meteorological data for five representative cities each in the central and southern regions were used for the simulation. A majority of the 18 groups produced results that satisfied the MBE and cv(RMSE) criteria.

  • A computational study has been performed out to evaluate the effect of a vertical porous barrier on the pressure oscillations in a supersonic cavity. The porous barriers with different perforations were vertically installed into a rectangular cavity at Mach numbers 1.50, 1.83 and 2.50. TVD finite difference MUSCL scheme was employed to solve the two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present vertical porous barrier considerably altered the characteristics of the time-dependent shear layers that occur at the upstream edge of cavity and remarkably reduced the pressure oscillations inside the supersonic cavity. The present results showed that the effectiveness of passive control using the present porous vertical barrier is dependent on Mach number and the perforation of the porous barrier.

  • In order to prevent the ground subsidence accidents caused by the occurrence of underground cavity, it is necessary to evaluate the mechanical characteristics in the relaxation zone of the underground cavity. Also, the relaxation zone including underground cavity be appropriately reinforced. This paper described analysis results based on finite element method that was conducted to analyze the mechanism for occurrence of the relaxation zone around the underground cavity. The finite element analysis applied in forced displacement was carried out to simulate the underground cavity and relaxation zone, and then there were compared with previous research results. The analysis results showed that the void distribution of soil around the underground cavity has figured out. As a result, the area of the relaxation zone could be quantitatively presented by reduction characteristics of the shear stress.
