  • The freeze-thaw deterioration and chloride attack, which are the typical degradation factors for durability of marine concrete, are significantly affected by pore structures in terms of penetration and diffusion. These pore structures of concrete are closely related to the types and amount of AE agent, used to guarantee the resistance of freeze-thaw deterioration, and the elapsed time before concrete pouring. This paper evaluates the durability of concrete based on the results of tests on cylinder specimens and core specimens from mock-up members with different air content of 4~6% and 8~10%, respectively. According to the test results, the air content of hardened concrete is 2.5~5.2% at 7 days and 2.4~5.1% at 28 days. These air contents are about half of the initial values just after the concrete mixing. Judging from the amount of scale after the freeze-thaw test completed, air content of 8~10% is slightly more beneficial against the deterioration of concrete than air content of 4~6%. Meanwhile, the core specimens from mock-up members exhibit somewhat unfavorable freeze-thaw deterioration and chloride migration characteristic compared with the cylinder specimens tested in the laboratory under the same mixing condition, as to show 106% in freeze-thaw test and 160% in chloride diffusion coefficient test, respectively.

  • This paper studies the early-aged chloride binding capacity of various blended concretes including OPC(ordinary Portland cement), PFA(pulversied fly ash), GGBFS(ground granulated blast furnace slag) and SF(silica fume) cement paste. Cement pastes with 0.4 of a free water/binder ratio were cast with chloride admixed in mixing water, which ranged from 0.1 to 3.0% by weight of cement and different replacement ratios for the PFA, GGBFS and SF were used. The content of chloride in each paste was measured using water extraction method after 7 days curing. It was found that the chloride binding capacity strongly depends on binder type, replacement ratio and total chloride content. An increase in total chloride results in a decrease in the chloride binding, because of the restriction of the binding capacity of cement matrix. For the pastes containing maximum level of PFA(30%) and GGBFS(60%) replacement in this study, the chloride binding capacity was lower than those of OPC paste, and an increase in SF resulted in decreased chloride binding, which are ascribed to a latent hydration of pozzolanic materials and a fall in the pH of the pore solution, respectively. The chloride binding capacity at 7 days shows that the order of the resistance to chloride-induced corrosion is 30%PFA > 10%SF > 60%GGBFS > OPC, when chlorides are internally intruded in concrete. In addition, it is found that the binding behaviour of all binders are well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.

  • Soil structure and organic matter have been known to strongly affect water flow and solute transport, yet little information is available concerning soil hydraulic properties related to soil physical and chemical properties in the forest site. The purpose of this study was to quantify the spatial variability and spatial correlation of the measured parameter values from the plots established with the rainfall simulator on Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) dominated site in Kwangju. Kyunggi-Do. Measurement of soil water flux and retention were made with the inherent soil texture, soil structure, and organic matter. The method was based on the observation that when water was applied at a constant rate to the soil surface on each plot. The method was simple to apply and consists of following steps: (i) Wet the soil from a rainfall simulator with several known discharge rates on a relatively leveled soil surface with and without organic matter. (ii) Once the borders of the ponded zone were steady, saturated hydraulic conductivity( $K_{s}$) and the matric flux function(F) was evaluated from a regression of flux vs. the reciprocal of the ponded area. A conductivity of the form $K_{i+}$$_1$ $_{c}$= $K_{i}$( $_{c}$) [1-d /dz] where flux continuity implies. For this, continuity of matric potential at the interface at all times are as follows: $_1$( $Z_{c}$) = $_2$( $Z_{c}$) = $_{c}$ for steady state intake from water ponded on the soil surface. Results of this investigation showed the importance of understanding spatial variability in wide differences of water retention and saturated hydraulic conductivity with respect to pore geometry and organic matter contents which influenced the water flux throughout the soil profile.l profile.ile.

  • GFRP rebars could be deteriorated by concrete alkalinity. This paper focuses on the investigation of durability of GFRP rebars with ribs exposed to alkaline environment of concrete. It has been reported that the milled E-glass fibers in the ribs of GFRP rebar can increase bond strength between GFRP rebars and the concrete. In this study, the effect of milled alkaline resistant glass fibers (milled AR glass) and milled E-glass in the ribs on the durability of GFRP rebar is investigated through ISS tests and moist absorption tests of the bare rebar. To accelerate the effect of the alkalinity, high temperature($40^{\circ}C$) was applied. According to the test results, mix ratio of milled glass fibers in the ribs by weight had significant effect on durability of GFRP rebars with ribs. It is because that the high mix ratio may leads more voids in the ribs due to lower workability and formability. On the other hand, changing fiber type in the ribs from E-glass to AR-glass had no improvements on ISS strength of the GFRP rebar. Therefore, it is found that determination of proper mix ratio of milled glass fiber in the mixture for the formation of the ribs of the GFRP rebar is important.

  • In this work, to develop soil inoculant which maintains stable viable cells and normalized quality, studies on micro-encapsulation with bacteria and yeast cells were performed by investigating materials and methods for micro-encapsulation as well as variation and stability of encapsulated cells. Preparation of capsule was conducted by application of extrusion system using micro-nozzle and peristaltic pump. K-carragenan and Na-alginate were selected as best carrier for gelation among K-carageenan, Na-alginate, locust bean gum, cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), chitosan and gelatin tested. Comparing the gels prepared with Bacillus sp. KSIA-9 and carriers of 1.5% concentration, although viable cell of K-carragenan and Na-alginate was six times higher than those of other, Na-alginate was finally selected as carrier for gelation because it is seven times cheaper than K-carragenan. The gel of 1.5% Na-alginate was also observed to have the best morphology with circular hardness polymatrix and highest viable cell. When investigating the stability of encapsulated cells and the stabilizer effect, free cells were almost dead within 30 or 40 days whereas encapsulated cells decreased in 10% after 30 days and 15-30% even after 120 days. As stabilizer for maintaining viable cell, both 1% starch and zeolite appeared to possess the level of 70-80% cell for bacteria and yeast until after 120 days.

  • Softening effects of enzyme following pre-treatments were examined. Four pre-treatments: raw (R), heat (H), heat and freeze-thawing (HFT), heat and freeze-drying (HFD) were applied to carrot. Subsequently, each treated sample was immersed in 10% celluclast enzyme solution for up to 6 h and then their properties were compared. The minimum and the maximum color change was observed in HFD and H, respectively. R showed no change in hardness after 6 h immersion, indicating that the enzyme did not penetrate the carrot. The number and size of pores were greater in samples undergone HFT or HFD as observed by microstructure analysis using SEM, and HFD caused 99.5% reduction in hardness after 6 h immersion. After 6 h immersion post-HFT or 3 h immersion post-HFD, the hardness was less than $20,000N/m^2$, indicating tongue ingestion was possible, and the samples retained their original shape and easily collapsed by spoon pressing.

  • As of 2018, Steel slag was generated approximately 24.23 million tons. Howeve, except blast furnace slag, steel slag is a typical by-product which does not have a clearly defined purpose in recycling. Thus, countries around the world are putting great efforts into developing a purpose for the recycling of steel slag. The vast habitat foundation of marine life has been destroyed due to recent reckless marine development and environment pollution, resulting in intensification of the decline of marine resources, and a solution to this issue is imperative. In order to propose a method to recycle large amounts of by-product slag into a material that can serve as an alternative to natural aggregate, the engineering properties and applicability for each mixing factor of environment friendly porous concrete as a material for the composition of seawater purification were in this study. Regarding the nutrient elution properties, it was clear that the nutrients continuously flowed out up to an immersion time by 8 months in natural seawater; the nitrogenous fertilizer displayed excellent elution properties in this regard.

  • This paper aims to evaluating the interlayer strength of 3D-printed concrete with interlayer reinforcement. According to lap splices, two reinforcement methods were considered. One method did not include lap splices of interlayer reinforcement, but the other method included lap splices with length of 40mm. In addition, two different curing conditions were applied: air curing conditions and water curing conditions. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of 3D-printed concrete specimens were measured in three loading directions with different reinforcement methods and curing conditions. Splitting and flexural tensile strengths decreased considerably when tensile stresses acted over the interlayers of 3D-printed concrete specimens. However, the flexural tensile strength or interlayer bonding strength of the printed specimens increased significantly at the interlayers when the longitudinal interlayer reinforcement penetrated printed layers. Interlayer bonding strength of printed concrete decreased after air curing treatment was applied because interlayers of printed concrete with more pores formed by the air cu ring conditions are more vulnerable to the load.

  • To overcome the limitation of conventional rock excavation methods, the excavation with abrasive waterjet has been actively developed. The abrasive waterjet excavation method has the effect of reducing blasting vibration and enhancing the excavation efficiency by forming a continuous free surface on the rock. However, the waterjet cutting performance varies with rock fracturing characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the cutting performance for various rocks in order to effectively utilize the waterjet excavation. In this study, cutting experiments with the high pressure waterjet system were performed for basalt and granite specimens. Water pressure, standoff distance, and traverse speed were determined as effective parameters for the abrasive waterjet cutting. The cutting depth and width of basalt specimens were analyzed to compare with granite results. The averaged cutting depth of basalt was shown in 41% deeper than granite; in addition, the averaged cutting width of basalt was formed by 18.5% narrower than granite. The results of this study are expected to be useful basic data for applying rock excavation site with low strength and high porosity such as basalt.

  • The performance of carbon fiber is important for the production of these high-quality polymer composite materials such as CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). For this purpose, it is essential to use an optimized spinning process for improving the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of the precursor fiber, which greatly affects the properties of the carbon fiber, and the use of a suitable precursor polymer. In this study, the content of MAA (Methacrylic Acid), MAA injection time, and concentration of AIBN (2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile)) were set as parameters for the polymer synthesis process, and Poly(AN-co-MAA) (poly(acrylonitrile-co-methacrylic acid)) was polymerized by solution polymerization. Poly(AN-co-MAA) with a molecular weight of 305,138 g/mol and an MAA ratio of 4.2% was dissolved in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) at a concentration of 16.0 wt%, and then a precursor fiber was prepared through dry-jet-wet spinning. The precursor fiber had a tensile strength of ~1.06 GPa and a tensile modulus of ~22.01 GPa, and no voids and structural defects were observed on the fiber.
