  • In this paper, the effect of compression levels on the strengths of porous concrete using bottom ash aggregates was analyzed. Coal bottom ash (CBA) was used as aggregate in porous concrete in this study. The aggregate size types used in the CBA concrete mixtures were catagorized into two different ones. One included only a single aggregate particle size and the other included hybrid aggregate particles mixed at a ratio of 8:2 volume proportion. The water-binder ratio was fixed at 0.30, and the compression levels were applied at 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa valu es to fabricate a porou s concrete specimen. The total porosity, compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths were tested and analyzed. When the compression level increased, the total porosity decreased, meanwhile the compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths increased. The total porosity of concrete using hybrid aggregate was lower and the strength was larger than those of concrete using single-type aggregate. Finally, the correlation between the total porosity, compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of porous concrete were presented. The total porosity and strength characteristics showed an inversely proportional correlation.

  • Recently, NDTs (Non-Destructive Techniques) using infrared camera are widely studied for detection of damage and void in RC (reinforced concrete) structures and they are also considered as an effective techniques for maintenance of infrastructures. The temperature on concrete surface depends on material and thermal properties such as specific heat, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusion coefficient. Different porosity on cement mortar due to different mixture proportions can show different heat behavior in cooling stage. The porosity can affect physical and durability properties like strength and chloride diffusion coefficient as well. In this paper, active thermography which uses flash for heat induction is utilized and thermal characteristics on surface are evaluated. Samples of cement mortar with W/C (water to cement ratio) of 0.55 and 0.65 are prepared and physical properties like porosity, compressive strength, and chloride diffusion coefficient are evaluated. Then infrared thermography technique is carried out in a constant room condition (temperature $20{\sim}22^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity 55-60%). The mortar samples with higher porosity shows higher residual temperature at the cooling stage and also shows reduced critical time which shows constant temperature due to back wall effect. Furthermore, simple equation for critical time of back wall effect is suggested with porosity and experimental constants. These characteristics indicate the applicability of infrared thermography as an NDT for quality assessment of cement based composite like concrete. Physical properties and thermal behavior in cement mortar with different porosity are analyzed in discussed in this paper.

  • Many researches on electromagnetic (EM) properties like dielectric constant and conductivity are performed since they can be characterized in nonmetallic cement-based material such as mortar and concrete. However, they are much affected by the moisture so that the behaviors of EM properties are to be clearly understood. In this paper, measurements for saturation and EM properties are performed for cement mortar specimens with five different water to cement (W/C) ratios including basic tests like compressive strength and porosity measurement. Every saturated specimens are exposed to room condition and the changes in EM properties caused by decreasing saturation are analyzed. In the saturated condition, higher measurement of EM properties are evaluated in the specimens with higher porosity, however this relationship is adversely changed with drying process. Since the pores without filled water causes the decreases in EM properties, the measurements show stable and linear increment with the lower W/C ratios. Furthermore, the increasing ratios of EM measurements with W/C ratio are shown with saturation and the relationships between them are derived through regression analysis.

  • To obtain the input data for the design and long-term performance assessment of a high-level waste repository, the thermal conductivities of several granite rocks which were taken from the rock cores from the declined borehole were measured. The thermal conductivities of granite were measured under the different conditions of water content to investigate the effects of the water content on the thermal conductivity. A simple empirical correlation was proposed to predict the thermal conductivity of granite as a function of effective porosity and water content which can be measured with relative ease while neglecting the possible effects of mineralogy, structure and anisotropy. The correlation could predict the thermal conductivity of granite with the effective porosity below 2.7% from the KURT site with an estimated error below 10%.

  • A new model which requires one branch of main curves for the model calibration is developed based on the assumption that the weighting factor accounting for the pore blockage effect against air entry, $P_a({\theta})$, in Mualem's Model III-1 has a linear relation to the dimensionless pore radius r. The proposed model simulates experimental data more accurately than existing models which require one branch of main curves for the model calibration. Previous study showed that Model III-1 is the most appropriate model among domain models which require two branches of main curves for the model calibration. In comparison of the proposed model with Model III-1, both simulate hysteresis curves with almost the same accuracy. The proposed model can be applied efficiently in analyzing the unsaturated flow.

  • As the flow velocity and Reynolds number increase in rockfill porous media, the flow deviates from Darcy conditions. In this study, the permeability tests of rock column specimen and laboratory gabion weir model were carried out to investigate a head loss behaviour of flow through rockfill deposition in small river artificial recharge. Through column test, the nonlinear relationships between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient and coefficients were determined and the correlation formula of hydraulic mean radius and coefficients was proposed. The flow velocities and discharges in voids estimated by proposed equations were well matched with the measured values of laboratory gabion weir model.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical properties of porous concrete according to the aggregate shape and size which is produced by con crusher and impact crusher. For this purpose, the selected test variables were the aggregate size and shape, the ratio of water to cement and the ratio of paste to aggregate. The results of this study showed that its economic performance and physical properties were improved using the aggregate made by impact crusher. The coefficient of permeability and compressive strength of porous concrete had a close correlationship with the void ratio, and it was suggested as a function of void ratio.

  • Using fractal dimensionality theory proposed by Riew and Sposito (1991), we attempted to analyze quantitatively the characteristics of porous distribution for built-in soils in the mini-lysimeter and artificial seed-bed media. The 2" stainless core soil samples were taken from lysimeter soils. Artificial seed-bed media were compacted in the acrylic core filled with raw materials consisted of cocopeat, zeolite and perlite. N (Constant number of partitioned group size smaller media volumes) and r (Self-similarity ratio) parameters consisting of fractal dimension D=log(N)/log(1/r) were obtained by Excel Programme using the Riew and Sposito's fractal model. The pore distribution of tested media was screened in pore size and its occurring frequency. The results reveal that the distribution range of pores is wider in the lysimeter soils than in the seed-bed media, while average size of pores in the media is smaller in lysimeter core soils than in seed-bed media.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salt water resistance of concrete depending on various types of cement. In this regard, 5 types of concrete were selected and their strength, void ratio and chloride ion diffusion characteristics were tested, and mutual correlation were analyzed. From the test results, the compressive strength and void ratio of concrete which using Type V cement was as good as Type I cement at long-term ages but the chloride diffusion coefficient of Type V cement was larger than Type I cement. And the concrete replacing some portion of the Type I cement with fly ash was superior in the cases of compressive strength, void ratio and the resistance of chloride ion permeation compared to the Type I cement with the lapse of ages. On the other hand, the compressive strength, the void ratio and the chloride diffusion coefficient of the concrete all indicated high levels of the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination regardless of the type of cement.

  • The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the pore structure and mechanical properties of early frost damaged concrete using electric arc furnace slag as aggregate. From the results, when the concrete is exposed to frost damage at an early age, the peak point of pores 100 to 150 ㎛ in diameter were transferred into larger one. When the freezing duration is not exceeded 24 hours, it is possible that the pore distribution of under the 200 ㎛ is maintained and pore size of over 500 ㎛ is not formed, and, the freezing resistance of concrete using EFG could be improved. When BFS was mixed in concrete using EFG as coarse aggregate, the relative strength is higher than that of natural coarse aggregate. Meanwhile, the elastic modulus and resonance frequency did not change significantly due to the early frost damage as compared with the compressive strength. So, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between the experimental results in order to evaluate the performance degradation due to early frost damage.
