  • Recently, mean shift tracking algorithms have been proposed which use the information of color histogram together with some spatial information provided by the kernel. In spite of their fast speed, the algorithms are suffer from an inherent instability problem which is due to the use of an isotropic kernel for spatiality and the use of the Bhattacharyya coefficient as a similarity function. In this paper, we analyze how the kernel and the Bhattacharyya coefficient can arouse the instability problem. Based on the analysis, we propose a novel tracking scheme that uses a new representation of the location of the target which is constrained by the color, the area, and the spatiality information of the target in a more stable way than the mean shift algorithm. With this representation, the target localization in the next frame can be achieved by one step computation, which makes the tracking stable, even in difficult situations such as low-rate-frame environment, and partial occlusion.

  • H.264 adopts new coding tools such as intra-prediction, loop filter, etc. The adoption of these tools enables an H.264-coded bitstream to have more information compared with previous standards. In this paper we proposed an effective spatial error concealment method for H.264. Among the information included in an H.264-coded bitstream, we use intra-mode for recovering a damaged block. This is because prediction direction in intra-mode is highly correlated to the edge direction of a lost macroblock. We first estimate the edge direction using intra-modes of blocks adjacent to a lost macroblock, and classify the area in a damaged macroblock into the edge and the flat area. And then our method recovers pixel values in the edge area using edge-directed interpolation, and recovers pixel values in the flat area using weighted interpolation. Simulation results show the proposed method yields better video quality than conventional approaches by 0.35 to 5.48 dB.

  • This paper deals with the space-time finite element analysis of two-dimensional vibration problem with a single variable. The method of space-time finite elements enables the simpler solution than the usual finite element analysis with discretization in space only. We present a discretization technique in which finite element approximations are used in time and space simultaneously for a relatively large time period. The weighted residual process is used to formulate a finite element method for a space-time domain. A stability problem is described and some investigations for chosen type of rectangular space-time finite elements are carried out. Instability is caused by a too large time step of successive time steps in the traditional time-dependent problems. It has been shown that the numerical stability of time-stepping on the larger time steps is quite good. The unstructured space-time finite element not only overcomes the shortcomings of the stability in the traditional numerical methods, but it is also endowed with the features of an effective computational technique. Some numerical examples have been presented to illustrate the efficiency of the described method.

  • Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is the primary statistical method in previous studies for vegetation distribution patterns in relation to landform. However, this global regression lacks the ability to uncover some local-specific relationships and spatial autocorrelation in model residuals. This study employed geographically weighted regression (GWR) to examine the spatially varying relationships between NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) patterns and changing trends of landform (elevation, slope) and solar intensity (insolation and duration of sunshine) in Mt Geum-gang of North-Korea. Results denoted that GWR was more powerful than OLS in interpreting relationships between NDVI patterns and landform/solar intensity, since GWR was characterized by higher adjusted R2, and reduced spatial autocorrelations in model residuals. Unlike OLS regression, GWR allowed the coefficients of explanatory variables to differ by locality by giving relatively more weight to NDVI patterns which are affected by local landform and solar factors. The strength of the regression relationships in the GWR increased significantly, by showing regression coefficient of higher than 70% (0.744) in the southern ridge of the experimental area. It is anticipated that this research output will serve to increase the scientific and objective vegetation monitoring in relation to landform and solar intensity by overcoming serious constraints suffered from the past non-GWR-based approach.

  • This study will be a new attempt to quantify flood vulnerability taking into account uncertainty. Information obtained from the real world has lots of uncertainties. Therefore, this study developed an approach to quantify spatial flood vulnerability of Korea using Fuzzy TOPSIS approach. Also, Fuzzy TOPSIS were compared with TOPSIS and weighted sum method. As a result, rankings of some areas were changed dramatically due to the uncertainty. Spearman rank correlation analysis indicated that the rankings of TOPSIS and weighted sum method were almost similar, but quite different from ranking of Fuzzy TOPSIS. In other words, because applying Fuzzy concept in regional vulnerability assessment may cause a significant change in priorities, the model presented in this study may be a method of vulnerability assessment.

  • This paper introduces the Spatially Preprocessed Speech Distortion Weighted Multi-channel Wiener Filter (SP-SDW-MWF) for multi-microphone noise reduction and proposes a method to determine the speech distortion weights. The SP-SDW-MWF is known as a robust noise reduction algorithm against the error caused by the mismatch in microphones. The SP-SDW-MWF adopts weights which determine the amount of noise reduction at the expense of introducing speech distortion in the noise-suppressed speech. In this paper, we use the error of power spectral density between the estimated signal and the desired signal as the evaluation measure. Thus the a priori SNR is used to control the speech distortion weights in the frequency domain. In the experimental results, the proposed method yields better result in terms of MFCC distortion compared to the conventional method.

  • This study analyzed the seismic fragility of bored tunnels based on their surrounding conditions and suggested a representative seismic fragility model. By analyzing the existed seismic fragility models developed for bored tunnels, we developed weighted combination models for each surrounding conditions, such as ground conditions and depth of the tunnel. The seismic fragility curves use the peak ground acceleration (PGA) as a parameter. When the PGA was 0.3 g, the probability of damage exceeding minor or slight damage was 20% for depth of 50 m or less, 10% for depth between 50 m and 100 m, and 3% for depth of 100 m or more. It was also found that the probability of damage was higher for the same PGA and depth when the surrounding ground was rock rather than soil. The probability of damage decreases as the depth increase. This study is expected to be used for developing a comprehensive seismic fragility function for tunnels in the future.
