  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach which models multilingual story link detection by adapting the features such as timelines and multilingual spaces as weighting components to give distinctive weights to terms related to events. On timelines term significance is calculated by comparing term distribution of the documents on that day with that on the total document collection reported, and used to represent the document vectors on that day. Since two languages can provide more information than one language, term significance is measured on each language space and used to refer the other language space as a bridge on multilingual spaces. Evaluating the method on Korean and Japanese news articles, our method achieved $14.3{\%}\;and\;16.7{\%}$ improvement for mono- and multi-lingual story pairs, and for multilingual story pairs, respectively. By measuring the space density, the proposed weighting components are verified with a high density of the intra-event stories and a low density of the inter-events stories. This result indicates that the proposed method is helpful for multilingual story link detection.

  • Surface data generally represent continuous distribution of geographical or social phenomena of a region in urban analysis. Instances include distribution of temperature, population of region, and various distributions related to human activities. When spatial data are given in the form of surface, surface comparison is required as a way of comprehending the surface change or the relationship between two surfaces. As for previous approaches of surface comparison, there are visualization, quantitative methods and qualitative method. All those approaches, however, show the difference between two surfaces in a limited way. Especially, they are not able to distinguish spatial difference between two surfaces. To overcome such problem, this paper proposes a method of comparing two surfaces in terms of their spatial structure. Main concept of the method comes from earth moving problem and the method is named minimum surface transformation, here. When a surface is transformed into another, total surface volume moved in the process of transformation should be the minimum. Both quantitative and spatial differences between two surfaces are evaluted by total surface volume moved and the distribution of moved surface volume of each cell respectively. The method is applied to hypothetical and actual data. From the former, it is understood that the method explains how two surfaces are quantitatively and spatially different. The result of the latter shows that moved total surface volume decreases as time goes by which fits the actual situation that population change rate gets smaller. Concerning the other measure of surface difference, the distribution of $X_{ij}$ describes detailed flow of surface volume than that of simply subtracting surface volume by indicating to what direction the population change occurs.

  • To enhance the user response time of content-based retrieval service for multimedia information, several multi-dimensional index schemes have been proposed. M-tree, a well-known multidimensional index scheme is of metric space access method, and is based on the distance between objects in the metric space. However, since the overlap between index spaces of nodes might enlarge the number of nodes of M-tree accessed for query processing, the user response time for content-based multimedia information retrieval grows longer. In this paper, we propose a node split algorithm which is able to reduce the sire of overlap between index spaces of nodes in M-tree. In the proposed scheme, we choose a virtual center point as the routing object and entry redistribution as the postprocessing after node split in order to reduce the radius of index space of a node, and finally in order to reduce the overlap between the index spaces of routing nodes. From the experimental results, we can see the proposed split algorithm reduce the overlap between index space of nodes and finally enhance the user response time for similarity-based query processing.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply spatial landslide information system using Geographic information system (GIS) in concerned with spatial data. Landslide locations detected from interpretation of aerial photo and field survey, and topographic , soil , forest , and geological maps of the study area, Yongin were collected and constructed into spatial database using GIS. As landslide occurrence factors, slope, aspect and curvature of topography were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of wood were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the Landsat TM satellite image. In addition, landslide damageable objects such as building, road, rail and other facility were extracted from the topographic database. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslide occurrence factors by probability, logistic regression and neural network methods. The spatial landslide information system was developed to retrieve the constructed GIS database and landslide susceptibility . The system was developed using Arc View script language(Avenue), and consisted of pull-down and icon menus for easy use. Also, the constructed database can be retrieved through Internet World Wide Web (WWW) using Internet GIS technology.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques can be used for the spectral efficiency enhancement of the cellular systems, which can be categorized into spatial multiplexing (SM) and spatial diversity schemes. MIMO systems suffer a severe performance degradation due to the intercell interference from the adjacent cells as the mobile terminal moves toward the cell boundary. Therefore for the spectral efficiency enhancement, an appropriate transmission scheme for the given channel environment and reception scheme which can mitigate the intercell interference are required. In this paper, we propose an adaptive signal transmission/reception scheme for the spectral efficiency improvement of $M_R{\times}M_T$ MIMO systems, present the decision criteria for the adaptive operation of the proposed scheme, and demonstrate the performance gain. The proposed scheme performs adaptive transmission using spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity, and adaptive reception using maximal ratio combining (MRC) and intercell spatial demultiplexing (ISD) when the spatial diversity transmission is used at the transmitter. Spatial multiplexing/demultiplexing is performed at the high signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) range, and the transmit diversity in conjunction with the adaptive reception uses either conventional MRC or ISD which can mitigate the $M_R-1$ interference signals, based on the mobile location. For the performance evaluation of the proposed adaptive scheme, the probability density function (pdf) of the effective SIR for the transmission/reception methods in consideration are derived for $M_R{\times}M_T$ MIMO systems. Using the results, the average effective SIR and spectral efficiency are presented and compared with simulation results.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a data transformation method for visualizing the statistical information based on the grid system which has regular shape and size. Grid is better solution than administrator boundary or census block to check the distribution of the statistical information and be able to use as a spatial unit on the map flexibly. On the other hand, we need the additional process to convert the various statistical information to grid if we use the current method which is areal interpolation. Therefore, this paper proposes the 3 steps to convert the various statistical information to grid. 1)Geocoding the statistical information, 2)Converting the spatial information through the defining the spatial relationship, 3)Attribute transformation considering the data scale measurement. This method applies to the population density of Seoul to convert to the grid. Especially, spatial autocorrelation is performed to check the consistency of grid display if the reference data is different for same statistic information. As a result, both distribution of grid are similar to each other when the population density data which is represented by census block and building is converted to grid. Through the result of implementation, it is demonstrated to be able to perform the consistent data conversion based on the proposed method.

  • Interplanetary space between Sun and Earth is area of flowing very fast solar wind which is contained X ray, flare, corona mass, etc. occurred Sun surface to Earth. This solar wind is affected directly to Earth magnetosphere and ionosphere so that this bring out broadcasting and communication interruptions, satellite operation obstacles and power gird defects and etc..Solar wind flow in interplanetary space is measured as solar wind speed, density and direction by measuring scintillation value to be produced during radio source is passed through solar wind. The wider effective collective areas and the more radio sources, accuracy of solar wind measuring is got higher. Function test was performed using 3 tiles which was manufactured as prototype. Restriction of quantity of tiles, test was performed to confirm whether measured beam pattern is complied with requirement or not. In this paper, it is shown design and their specification of ground interplanetary radio measurement system as well as technical issues and resolutions which were raised during design phase. Also result of function verification test using prototype is suggested. It is confirmed that measured beam pattern was met with requirement.

  • This study analyzed the spatial correlograms of minutely rainfall data with respect to various accumulation times. A bivariate mixed lognormal distribution was applied for rainfall modelling. A total of 26 minutely rainfall data sets from rain gauge stations in the central part of Korean peninsula were analyzed, also repeated for several storm types like Jang-Ma, typhoon and convective storms for their comparison. The accumulation times 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 30 and 60 minutes were considered in this study. As results, it was found that the minutely rainfall data available was not good enough for estimating minutely rainfall intensity at ungaged locations. It seems more practical to use the hourly rainfall data with much higher rain gauge density, if proper methods for interpolation and data dis-aggregation are provided.

  • Spatial data base system provides many query types and most of them are required frequent disk I/O and much CPU time. k-NN search is to find k-th closest object from the query point and up to now, several k-NN search methods have been proposed. Among these, MINMAX distance method has an aim not to access unnecessary node by adapting pruning technique. But this method accesses more disks than necessary while pruning unnecessary nodes. In this paper, we propose new k-NN search algorithm based on density of object. With this method, we predict the radius to be expected to contain k-NN objects using density of data set and search those objects within this radius and then adjust radius if failed. Experimental results show that this method outperforms the previous MINMAX distance method. This algorithm visit less disks than MINMAX method by the factor of maximum 22% and average 7%.

  • Essential to the establishment of such 3D spatial information are the laser scanning technology to obtain high-precision 3D point group data and the photography-metric camera to obtain high-resolution multispectral image information. The photography-metric camera, however, lacks in usability for its broad scope of utilization due to the high purchase price, difficult purchase channel, and low applicability. This study thus set out to investigate a technique to establish multi-dimensional ortho-image data with a single lens reflex digital camera of high speed and easy accessibility for general users. That is, the study remodeled a single lens reflex digital camera and calibrated the remodeled camera to establish 3D multispectral image information, which is the essential data of 3D spatial information. Multi-dimensional ortho-image data were collected by surveying the reference points for stereo photos, taking multispectral shots of the objects, and converting them into ortho-images.
