This paper presents the effect of spatially-distributed rainfall on both rainfall-sediment-runoff and erosion or deposition in the experimental Cheoncheon catchment: upstream of Yongdam dam basin. The rainfall fields were generated by three rainfall interpolation techniques (Thiessen polygon: TP, Inverse Distance Weighting: IDW, Kriging) based only on ground gauges and two radar rainfall synthetic techniques (Gauge-Radar ratio: GR, Conditional Merging: CM). Each rainfall field was then assessed in terms of spatial feature and quantity and also used for rainfall-sediment-runoff and erosion-deposition simulation due to the spatial difference of rainfall fields. The results showed that all the interpolation methods based on ground gauges provided very similar hydrologic responses in spite of different spatial pattern of erosion and deposition while raw radar and GR rainfall fields led to underestimated and overestimated simulation results, respectively. The CM technique was acceptable to improve the accuracy of raw radar rainfall for hydrologic simulation even though it is more time consuming to generate spatially-distributed rainfall.

Surface ozone is produced by photochemical reactions of nitrogen oxides(NOx) and volatile organic compounds(VOCs) emitted from vehicles and industrial sites, adversely affecting vegetation and the human body. In South Korea, ozone is monitored in real-time at stations(i.e., point measurements), but it is difficult to monitor and analyze its continuous spatial distribution. In this study, surface ozone concentrations were interpolated to have a spatial resolution of 1.5km every hour using the stacking ensemble technique, followed by a 5-fold cross-validation. Base models for the stacking ensemble were cokriging, multi-linear regression(MLR), random forest(RF), and support vector regression(SVR), while MLR was used as the meta model, having all base model results as additional input variables. The results showed that the stacking ensemble model yielded the better performance than the individual base models, resulting in an averaged R of 0.76 and RMSE of 0.0065ppm during the study period of 2020. The surface ozone concentration distribution generated by the stacking ensemble model had a wider range with a spatial pattern similar with terrain and urbanization variables, compared to those by the base models. Not only should the proposed model be capable of producing the hourly spatial distribution of ozone, but it should also be highly applicable for calculating the daily maximum 8-hour ozone concentrations.

Conventionally, in order to get accurate geolocation of satellite images we need a set of ground control points with respect to individual scenes. In this paper, we tested the possibilities of modeling satellite orbits from individual scenes by establishing a sensor model for one scene and by applying the model, which was derived from the same orbital segment, to other scenes that has been acquired from the same orbital segment. We investigated orbit-attitude models with several interpolation methods and with various parameter sets to be adjusted. We used 7 satellite images of SPOT-3 with a length of 420km and ground control points acquired from GPS surveying. Results of the conventional individual scene modeling hardly introduced differences among different interpolation methods and different adjustment parameter sets. As the results of orbit modeling, the best model was the one with Lagrange interpolation for position/velocity and linear interpolation for attitude and with position/angle bias as parameter sets. The best model showed that it is possible to model orbital segments of 420km with ground control points measured within one scene (60km).

Cold air accumulation plays a critical role in formulating daily minimum temperature in complex terrain on radiative cooling nights, and spatial interpolation can be improved by accommodating this important topoclimatic variable. Little is known about the spatial scale for computing cold air accumulation which influences daily minimum temperature. Air temperature was measured at 10-minute intervals during September 2002- February 2003 at eight locations within a 1 by 1 km hilly orchard area. Minimum temperature data for suspected radiative cooling nights were collected, and the deviations from reference observations at a near-by KMA automated weather station were calculated. A digital elevation model with a 10m cell size was used to calculate the cold air accumulation at 8 locations. Zonal averages of the cold air accumulation were computed for each location by increasing the cell radius from 1 to 10. Temperature deviations were regressed to a common logarithm of the smoothed averages of cold air accumulation to derive a linear relationship between the local temperature deviation and the site topography. The highest coefficient of determination ($r^2$ = 0.78) was found at a cell radius of 5, which corresponds to an approximately 1 ha boundary surrounding the point of interest.

In general, it is necessary to establish the dedicated GPS base station at the central point of the survey area in GPS/INS aerotriangulation. Although this base station is needed to achieve the required survey accuracy, there are some difficulties in practical operation. To tackle these difficulties and to achieve the effective GPS/INS aerotriangulation, the GPS data of CORS was interpolated and used in stead of those of the usual ground base station. Through this study, it was found that the interpolated CORS data was accurate enough to substitute dedicated GPS base station in GPS/INS aerotriangulation.

with the increasing popularity of regional studies, the importance of regional data has been recognized dramatically in recent years. However, due to potential problems from the intrinsic characteristics of aggregate regional data for the research, and incompatible regional units between source and target regional data units, the method for reorganizing the regional data units for a given research analysis should be required. In this regard, the purpose of this research is to review the significant interpolation methods for reorganizing the data units and, based on it, to propose the population weighted interpolation method. For the first purpose, areal weighted interpolation method, pycnophylactic method, dasymetric method, area-to-point method were reviewed. The proposed population-weighted interpolation method was applied to the case study of population census regional data in Erie County, NY, compared with areal weighted interpolation method, pycnophylactic method in terms of several statistical characteristics.

Usage of ecosystem models has been extended to landscape scales for understanding the effects of environmental factors on natural and agro-ecosystems and for serving as their management decision tools. Accurate prediction of spatial variation in daily temperature is required for most ecosystem models to be applied to landscape scales. There are relatively few empirical evaluations of landscape-scale temperature prediction techniques in mountainous terrain such as Korean Peninsula. We derived a periodic function of seasonal lapse rate fluctuation from analysis of elevation effects on daily temperatures. Observed daily maximum and minimum temperature data at 63 standard stations in 1999 were regressed to the latitude, longitude, distance from the nearest coastline and altitude of the stations, and the optimum models with $r^2$ of 0.65 and above were selected. Partial regression coefficients for the altitude variable were plotted against day of year, and a numerical formula was determined for simulating the seasonal trend of daily lapse rate, i.e., partial regression coefficients. The formula in conjunction with an inverse distance weighted interpolation scheme was applied to predict daily temperatures at 267 sites, where observation data are available, on randomly selected dates for winter, spring and summer in 2000. The estimation errors were smaller and more consistent than the inverse distance weighting plus mean annual lapse rate scheme. We conclude that this method is simple and accurate enough to be used as an operational temperature interpolation scheme at landscape scale in Korea and should be applicable to elsewhere.

Spatial interpolation has become a common procedure in converting temperature forecasts and observations at irregular points for use in regional scale ecosystem modeling and the model based decision support systems for resource management. Neglection of terrain effects in most spatial interpolations for short term temperatures may cause erroneous results in mountainous regions, where the observation network hardly covers full features of the complicated terrain. A spatial interpolation model for daytime hourly temperature was formulated based on error analysis of unsampled site with respect to the site topography. The model has a solar irradiance correction scheme in addition to the common backbone of the lapse rate - corrected inverse distance weighting. The solar irradiance scheme calculates the direct, diffuse and reflected components of shortwave radiation over any surfaces based on the sun-slope geometry and compares the sum with that over a reference surface. The deviation from the reference radiation is used to calculate the temperature correction term by an empirical conversion formula between the solar energy and the air temperature on any sloped surfaces at an hourly time scale, which can be prepared seasonally for each land cover type. When this model was applied to a 14 km by 22 km mountainous region at a 10 m horizontal resolution, the estimated hourly temperature surfaces showed a better agreement with the observed distribution than those by a conventional method.
