Ductiluty factor has played an important role in seismic design as it is key component of response modification factor(R). In this stuty, ductility factors() are calculated by multiplying ductility factor for SDOF systems() and MDOF modification factors(). Ductility factors() for SDOF systems are computed from nonlinear dynamic analysis undergoing different level of displacement ductiluty demands and period when subjected to a large number of recorded earthquake ground motions. The MDOF modification factors() are proposed to account for the MDOF systems, based on previous studies. A total of 108 prototype steel frames are designed to investigate the ductility factors considering the number of stories(4, 8 and 16-stories), framing system(Perimeter Frames, PF and Distributed Frames, DF), failure mechanism(Strong-Column Weak-Beam, SCWB and Weak-Column Strong-Beam, WCSB), soil profiles(SA, SC and SE in UBC 1997) and seismic zone factors(Z=0.075, 0.2 and 0.4 in UBC 1997). It is shown that the number of stories, failure mechanisms (SCWB, WCSB), and soil profiles have great influence on the ductility factors, however, the structural system(Perimeter frames, Distributed frames), and seismic zones have no influence on the ductility factors.

To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.

The seismic design regulations have not been applied to the low-rised buildings which are less than 6 stories in Korea. For these buildings which are designed only for gravity loads, theoretical formulas which can estimate the seismic strength of building are derived. The column hinge sway and beam hinge sway mechanism are assumed for the formulars. For the comparisons with the formulas, the results of push-over analyses of 3 and 4 storied buildings are used. It can be shown that the estimating formulas correspond well with the push-over analyses. And the seismic strength of building has a little relations with the number of bay and becomes larger as the building becomes lower. Also, as the ratio and strength of reinforcing steel increase, the seismic strength of building is increased.

This paper presents a conceptual strategy and technologies for the digital transformation of design and construction of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The development of an automated detail design strategy for RC structures is described. Integrated digital platform based on 5D BIM concept is proposed for the replacement of the current technology environment-based 2D CAD. Generally, the detail design development is labor-intensive and iterative. Effective automation of relevant aspects can dramatically improve productivity and accuracy. The proposed solutions for the automated BIM modeling based on the rebar and formwork detail design automation achieves the productivity and accuracy sufficient for site application. The platform integrates and manages the information flow between each solution or application and provides it to all participants of the project. Finally, it is expected that the proposed strategy and technologies can be further enhanced to achieve the productivity and accuracy needed for widespread site application and digital transformation.

Recently, the concern for displacement-based design has been increased as a performance based design method in which the deformation capacity of structure becomes so important. In this paper, a process is presented to accurately evaluate the deformation capacity of multistory RC frame structure. In the calculation of drift of frame, the deformation of beam and column as well as the deformation of anchorage and joint are considered. From the comparison between previous test and calculation results, the usefulness of the process is verified. The proposed process is also applied to the multiple story RC frame buildings(5, 10, 15 stories) designed to have strong column-weak beam. The results showed that the deformation capacity of the buildings could be not properly evaluated when deformations of anchorage and joint were ignored.

The risk-targeted seismic design concept was first included in ASCE/SEI 7-10 to address problems related to the uniform-hazard based seismic concept that has been constructed without explicitly considering probabilistic uncertainties in the collapse capacities of structures. However, this concept is not yet reflected to the current Korean building code(KBC) because of insufficient strong earthquake data occurred at the Korean peninsula and little information on the collapse capacities of structures. This study evaluates the risk-targeted seismic performance of steel ordinary concentrically braced frames(OCBFs). To do this, the collapse capacities of prototype steel OCBFs are assessed with various analysis parameters including building locations, building heights and soil conditions. The seismic hazard curves are developed using an empirical spectral shape prediction model that is capable of reflecting the characteristics of earthquake records. The collapse probabilities of the prototype steel OCBFs located at the Korean major cities are then evaluated using the risk integral concept. As a result, analysis parameters considerably influence the collapse probabilities of steel OCBFs. The collapse probabilities of taller steel OCBFs exceed the target seismic risk of 1 percent in 50 years, which the introduction of the height limitation of steel OCBFs into the future KBC should be considered.

This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for tall frameworks using composit member subject to lateral loads. To this end, displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of tall frameworks is established and approximation concept that preserves the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Specifically, under the 'constant-shape' assumption, resizing techniqe of composite member is developed. Two types of 50 story frameworks are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

The KBC2009 first introduces the requirements about vertical unbalanced forces into the design for steel ordinary concentrically braced frames(steel OCBFs), which forces them to easily meet the target seismic performance, called as the life safety performance objective under design based earthquakes(DBEs) pursuing in the KBC2009. However, there is little information on the effects of vertical unbalanced forces to the collapse prevention performance objective under maximum considered earthquakes(MCEs) which is another target seismic performance level implicitly prescribed in ASCE 7-10. It is valuable that the collapse capacities of steel OCBFs designed according to the KBC2009 are investigated. In this paper, the collapse modes of inverted V shaped steel OCBFs excited by MCEs are investigated. The prototype buildings of 5 story steel OCBFs are designed with different site conditions and three types of unbalanced forces are considered in the design stages. The prototype buildings are evaluated their seismic performances and collapse modes by nonlinear static analyses and nonlinear dynamic analyses. Analysis results show that the unbalanced forces significantly affect the seismic performance of the prototype buildings and proper considerations of unbalanced forces are required to achieve the desirable collapse mode and the collapse prevention performance objective.

This study summarizes the results of a research project aimed at investigating the inelastic rotation capacity of beam-column joints of reinforced concrete special moment frames. All of the test specimens were classified as special moment frame (SMF), based on the design and detailing requirements of the ACI 318-02 provisions. The acceptance criteria, originally defined for steel moment frame connections in the 1997 edition of the AISC Seismic provisions, were used to evaluate the beam-column joints of the reinforced concrete moment frames. A total of 39 test specimens were examined in detail. Most of the joints that satisfy the design requirements for special moment frame structures were found to be ductile up to a plastic rotation of 3% without any major degradation in strength. This is mainly due to the stringent ACI 318-02 requirements for special moment frame joints. The presence of transverse beams increases confinement and shear resistance of joints, which results in better performance than for joints without transverse beams. All of the SMF connections that satisfy the ACI 318-02 limitations on joint shear stress turned out to meet the acceptance criteria.
Moment frames have been widely used in building construction. In current design codes, concrete moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF, IMRCF, SMRCF)). The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of columns in ordinary moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF) and intermediate moment resisting concrete frames (IMRCF). For this purpose 3 story OMRCF and IMRCF buildings were designed and detailed in compliance to ACI 318 (2002) and KCI (1999). In this study the buildings were assumed to be located in seismic zone 1 classified by UBC (1997). This study considered the columns in the 1st story since these columns shall resist the largest axial and lateral forces during an earthquake. Eight 2/3 scale column specimens were made for representing the upper part and lower part of exterior and interior columns of the OMRCF and the IMRCF Quasi-static reversed cyclic loading was applied to each specimen with a constant or varying axial load. Test results show that seismic behaviors of columns are influenced by existence of lap splices, axial force levels, and lateral reinforcement at possible plastic hinging region. However, the effect of such variables strongly co-related to each other.
