Reuse of recycled aggregate from demolished concrete structure is beneficial and necessary from the viewpoint of environmental preservation and effective utilization of resources. The most important mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are the compressive strength, the tensile and the flexural strengths, the bond strength and the elastic modulus of such concrete. In particular, the stress-strain relation and fracture process of RAC in compression is especially important in theoretical and numerical analysis as well as engineering design of RAC structures. In this paper, to clarify the characteristics of fracture process in RAC, acoustic emission(AE) method is applied to detect micro-cracking in concrete under compression. From AE parameters, it is found that cracking and fracture behaviors in recycled aggregate concrete fairly differ from that of normal and recycled sand concrete.

The causes of concrete shrinkage are very diverse, in particular, aggregates impact the characteristics of shrinkage in concrete by constraining the shrinkage of cement paste. Meanwhile, owing to the lack of natural aggregate, various alternative aggregates are being developed, and their application in concrete also becomes more diverse. This study aimed to experimentally evaluate the drying and autogenous shrinkage in concrete that was composed of electric arc furnace slag as coarse aggregates. And, the results were compared with prediction models. From the results, the application of electric arc furnace slag can reduce the drying and autogenous shrinkage. In particular, autogenous shrinkage is greatly decreased. The predictions using GL2000 for drying shrinkage and Tazawa model for autogenous shrinkage were similar to the experimental results. However, the most prediction models do not consider the impact of aggregates, hence, the new prediction model should be developed or improved.
Since the concrete covers most structures in modern architecture and it is composed of aggregates of about 75%, the appropriate selection of aggregates is valuable for the durability of concrete. A major cause of the expansion of mortar-bar measured by ASTM C 227-90 has been accounted by the alkali-aggregate reaction. This study carried out designed experiments on some aggregates including basalt and sandstone, to classify the expansion factors into the alkali-aggregate reaction, the increase of the gel pore volume, and the interstitial water that could expand physically the cracks or foliation developed in aggregates itself. The quantitative analyses of expansion by each factor indicated that the interstitial water and/or the alkali-aggregate reaction had major roles in the concrete expansion. Thus, if the supplied aggregates have deteriorated the structural framework, it is important to investigate the exact causes through this suggested method.

Using the recycled aggregate not only saves landfill space but also reduces the demand for extraction of natural raw material for new construction activity. However few investigations have been carried out to study the shear behaviors of RC beams with recycled aggregates such as low absorption of recycled aggregate and full-scale specimens. In this study, six reinforced concrete beams were tested to evaluate the effects of shear strength, and shear behavior on the replacement level (0, 30, 60, and 100%) of recycled coarse aggregate and different amounts of shear reinforcement. The results showed that the beams with recycled coarse aggregates present the similar shear strength and deflections as the beam with natural aggregate on an equal amount of shear reinforcement. the reinforced concrete beams with recycled coarse aggregates present the Influence of shear span-to-depth ratio, effective depth, tension reinforcement ratio and compressive strength as the beams with natural aggregate. Shear strength were compared with the provisions in current code (KCI2007) and the equation proposed by Zsutty. The KCI equations were conservative and subsequently can be used for the shear design of recycled aggregate concrete beam.

The use of the recycled fine aggregate to the material of structural concrete is not easy currently because there are some problems, such as the difficulty of quality control and the badness of chemical and physical property other than river sand, crushed fine aggregate. To use of recycled fine aggregate, many researches on the recycling of recycled fine aggregate have been studying until today. However, the result of the research is little except for some results. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of use of recycled fine aggregate for raw material of plaster mortar. In this study, various tests were performed such as flow, air content, unit weight, bond strength, and compressive strength test to evaluate the effect according to the substitution of recycled concrete aggregate. The results of strength test showed that the concrete strength improved with the increase of replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. In the other side, flow and air content are decreased according to replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. The result of this study could be used as the basic data for the recycling of recycled fine aggregate.

Using the recycled aggregate can reduces the landfill space, the demand for natural raw material for new construction. Some investigations have been carried out to study the shear behaviors of RC beams with recycled aggregates. But these have some limitation due to the use of low quality recycled aggregates and small-scale specimens in the laboratory. In this study, four full-scaled RC beams were tested to evaluate the effects of replacement level (0,30, 60, and 100%) of recycled fine aggregate on shear behavior of RC beams. The results showed that the beams with recycled fine aggregates show similar crack pattern and failure mode compared with the beam with natural aggregate. Also, the beams with recycled fine aggregates present the similar shear strength except the one with the replacement level of 100% recycled fine aggregates. Shear strength were compared with the provisions in current code (KCI2007) and the equation proposed by Zsutty. The KCI equations were conservative and subsequently can be used for the shear design of recycled aggregate concrete beam.

Structural lightweight concrete will reduced total loads of supporting sections and foundations in archtectural and civil structures. So, the lightweight concrete can use widely for various purpose in the archtectural and civil structures. However, the performance of lightweight concrete is essentially dependent of properties of used lightweight aggregates. So, in this paper were examined the fresh and hardened properties of lightweight concrete that are used 3types of the differences properties of lightweight aggregates from lower water-ratio to higher water-ratio of concrete mixing regions. Lightweight concrete was somewhat exhibit larger slump loss than ordinary concrete. Also, the development of compressive strength was lower than ordinary concrete, however it was not showed a marked difference. According to types of lightweight aggregates, the case of synthetic lightweight aggregate are highest performance in fresh and hardened concrete, but it is should be to evaluate the structural performance testing as anchoring and bond strength with reinforcing steel bars.

In Korea, reutilization of construction waste is gaining attention as construction waste generated increases continuously. Currently, the concrete waste is simply crushed and used as a low value application such as paving, back filling, etc. To meet the demand of aggregate for construction and the resource efficiently, production of high quality recycled aggregate is necessary. Therefore, in this study, a better process for production of high quality recycled aggregate was developed using combination of heat pretreatment and autogenous milling. Test results showed that the recycled aggregate has a density of $2.5\;g/cm^3$ and a water absorption ratio of 3.0%, which meet the specification of the first class of KS F 2573. Currently, a pilot scale autogenous mill is being constructed and tests will be further conducted to develop a commerce-scale process.
The purpose of this study is to present the method of utilizing the recycled aggregate that are obtained from waste concrete as the concrete aggregate. We manufactured the recycled aggregate concrete with compressive strength of over 300kgf/㎠ to increase its weaker strength than the normal concrete, and compared the physical features of the recycled aggregate concrete with that of the normal concrete. As a result of the study, the mechanical performances such as compressive and tensile strength were generally reduced as the mixing rate of the recycled aggregate increased; however, it was possible to manufacture the concrete with the compressive strength of 300∼600kgf/㎠ using the adequate mixing material such as unit quantity of cement, compounding water and silicafume. However, a continuous study on long-term durability performance is required to manufacture and utilize the recycled aggregate concrete for the structure.
