  • The Voids in the Mineral Aggregate (VMA) within asphalt mixtures play a crucial role in defining the mixture's structural integrity, durability, and resistance to environmental factors. Accurate prediction and optimization of VMA are essential for enhancing the performance and longevity of asphalt pavements, particularly in varying climatic and environmental conditions. This study introduces a novel machine learning framework leveraging ensemble machine learning model for predicting VMA in asphalt mixtures. By analyzing a comprehensive set of variables, including aggregate size distribution, binder content, and compaction levels, our framework offers a more precise prediction of VMA than traditional single-model approaches. The use of advanced machine learning techniques not only surpasses the accuracy of conventional empirical methods but also significantly reduces the reliance on extensive laboratory testing. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of a data-driven approach in the field of asphalt mixture design, showcasing a path toward more efficient and sustainable pavement engineering practices. This research contributes to the advancement of predictive modeling in construction materials, offering valuable insights for the design and optimization of asphalt mixtures with optimal void characteristics.

  • Rutting on asphalt pavement surface is an important damage in most roadways in the world. Most of researches have developed prediction model for rutting on asphalt pavement as a function of physical properties of asphalt binder. But this study was devised to estimate rutting based on fundamental properties of asphalt mixture, not binder. Therefore this study objective is to estimate rutting based on volumetric properties, that is Air void, Void in mineral aggregate(VMA) and Void filled with asphalt(VFA), of asphalt mixture with various asphalt binders, aggregates and aggregate gradation. Results showed that it was possible to estimate rutting depth based on volumetric variables of asphalt mixture. In addition, VMA, the variable which is nor used In mix design in Korea, showed a significant correlation with rutting, It is recommended that VMA is adapted as a variable in domestic mix design. Also, It showed that VFA in the specification should be lowered at least 5% point since VFA was somewhat higher than optimum.

  • The Marshall mix design method used in Korea, which was described in the design & construction regulation, had been introduced from Japan Highway Cooperation standard guide. Most engineers have thought that it is the major reason that causes pavement distresses. Therefore, there is a need to modify the current Marshall mix design through using the volumetric design concept, which is most widely used in asphalt mix design. The modified mix design determines the preliminary optimum asphalt content at 4% VTM (Voids in Total Mix). If the Marshall properties, which are VFA, VMA, stability, and flow, were satisfied with the requirements, the preliminary optimum asphalt content is determined as the final optimum asphalt content. The modified Marshall mix design considers VMA. while the current Marshall mix design does not consider VMA. By considering the Marshall stability and flow as the criteria instead of design factors, the modified Marshall mix design is able to decrease the errors occurred in Marshall stability test The test was performed to compare the Marshall properties between current and modified Marshall mix design. The left results showed that there was no difference in the Marshall properties, except for VTM. Thus, the modified Marshall mix design can produce the asphalt mixtures with the constant VTM (4%), and it can improve the asphalt mixture quality in Korea.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest 10 mm aggregate specification for thin layer asphalt pavement using steel slag. Aggregate gradations of conventional dense-graded asphalt mixtures were made by fuller's model, whereas 10 mm dense-graded asphalt mixture was obtained tender mix due to close to the maximum density line. The proposed aggregate gradation specification was made to have enough VMA and well-interlocking refer to foreign standards. The correlation between the proposed aggregate gradation and the properties of mixtures were analyzed using Gradation Ratio (GR) and Compacted Aggregate Density (CAD). The CAD index has a high $R^2$ of 0.86-0.99 because the CAD index is able to reflect various aggregate properties. As the results of evaluation by CAD index the proposed aggregate gradation provides more reliable stability and VMA. The percent passing (%) of aggregate size smaller than 0.3 mm was limited 10% or more for improving crack resistance. This limitation increased for 15% of the asphalt mixture's toughness.

  • The concrete used most in construction materials. There is an overcrowded iron dimensions use of the concrete at time of the other concrete theory on the reinforcing rod back which did congestion and compares it with this, and there are more few dimensions of the aggregate than concrete, and quantity of aggregate passage is superior in mortar than concrete. If a volume rate of the aggregate writes mortar than concrete against this, therefore, unit amount increases, and quantity of paste increases and quantity of dry shrinkage than increase concrete. However, I let I regulate lay priest distribution of the aggregate, and the results rates increase and reduce unit amount and decrease quantity of dry shrinkage, and separation resistance and the gap passage characteristics are judged because it can be it in a substitute document of very superior concrete. I came to carry out the study that I watched to let I was useful a little more and do the improvement repair of a become building wall body, a basement pillar and repair reinforcement of the assistant in the reinforcing rod back, the old age when I made congestion here. I regulated lay priest distribution of the aggregate in the study and regulated substitution rate of the aggregate (40%, 50%, 60%) and divided W/C 30%, 40% standards and produced mortar and I compared quantity of air by this, slump, compression robbery and showed it this time.

  • Many researches have recently discussed about the film thickness as a good substitute or supplement for VMA or other volumetric criteria in the design procedure. Some researchers have not only proposed the specific number for the recommended film thickness, but also introduced the new calculation procedures or concepts. Each model (index model and the virtual model) has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of the ability to account for the volumetric properties of the mixture. In this paper, the modified virtual model was proposed to combine advantages from both models. However, it cannot be disregarded the way to determine the appropriate particle shape factors for different sources and sizes of aggregates. In order to evaluate the different calculation methods, mixtures with two aggregate sources and eight gradations were designed based on the dominant aggregate size range (DASR) porosity concept. Superpave indirect tensile test (IDT) and asphalt pavement analyzer (AEA) test were used to describe the performance of mixtures. Test results indicated that the virtual model, which is the same to the modified virtual model for sphere 1:1 case, is better than the conventional standard model to define the range of the film thickness to have better performance of asphalt mixtures.

  • Recently, there are an increasing number of studies on the method of wrapping the outer wall of granular piles with geosynthetic fibers such as geotextile or geogrid that has a certain level of tensile strength as an alternative method for the ground improvement techniques. In this study, triaxial compression tests are performed on the sand and clay specimen encased with various textiles to evaluate the reinforcing effect with regard to the tensile strength of the textile. Furthermore, triaxial compression tests are performed on the clay specimen inserted by sand only and sand encased with geosynthetics to compare behavioral differences between the conventional sand compaction pile and geosynthetic encased sand pile with regard to the replacement ratio, ${\alpha}_s$ and the tensile strength of the geosynthetics. Based on the experimental results, the strength enhancement due to the textile is affected by the longitudinal tensile strength rather than the transverse one of the applied textile. The effect of the confinement by the textile encasement results in the large increase of the cohesions. The overall behaviors, such as shear strength, pore pressure parameter at failure and stress ratio, of the geosynthetic encased sand pile is quite different from those of the conventional sand compaction pile.
