  • Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed. Couple of aggregates, like two different marine aggregates and two different crushed stones, have been employed. The measured flatness ratios of each aggregate were 0.30, 0.36, 0.47 and 0.83, respectively. Also, the conversion shape coefficients of each aggregate were determinded as 0.77, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.92. The size of aggregate has been modified by multiplying the shape conversion coefficient and the aggregate size from DIP. The modified gradation curve with modified volume and weight of aggregate has been suggested. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

  • The aim of this research is suggesting dry processed bottom ash as a new and economical source of lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete. The dry process of bottom ash is an advance method of water-free and no chloride because only cooled down by double dry conveyer belt systems. Furthermore, because of relatively slow cooling down process helps burning up the remaining carbon in bottom ash. Using this dry process bottom ash, to evaluate the feasibility of using as a lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete, two-phase of experiments were conducted: 1) improving shape of the bottom ash, and 2) controlling grade of the bottom ash. From the first phase of experiment, additional abrasing process was conducted for round shape bottom ash, hence improved workability and compressive strength was achieved while unit weight was increased comparatively. Based on the better shape of bottom ash, from the second phase, various grades were adopted on cement mortar, standard grade showed the most favorable results on fresh and hardened properties. It is considered that the results of this research contribute on widening sustainable method of using bottom ash based on the dry process and increasing value of bottom ash as a lightweight aggregate for concrete.

  • To effectively utilize resources of reject ash and dredged soil, globular shape-formed artificial lightweight aggregate were manufactured in 8~10 mm size. Starting materials were changed various grading and composition, sintered at $1050{\sim}1250^{\circ}C$. The specific gravity, water absorptance of artificial lightweight aggregates were measured on the basis of the KS. In this study could make a prediction about application of bloating mechanism by ferrous materials and alkali/alkali-earth oxide at high temperature.

  • Recently, interest grew on the quality of aggregates following the diminution of primary resources from river as to grow construction demand and the low grade of nature sand like sea sand. Following, need is to diversify the supply sources of fine aggregates which are excessively relying on sea sand and urgency is to find as soon as possible aggregate resources that can substitute sea sand. On the other hand, various fine aggregates are utilized to produce concrete in the domestic construction fields. However, few studies have been systematically investigated on the effects of such fine aggregates on concrete properties. Therefore, this study examined the effects of comparatively widely used fine aggregates in the domestic construction fields on the quality of concrete through the analysis of the effects of such fine aggregates on the physical properties of fresh concrete and strength of hardened concrete. Results revealed that crushed sand degraded the fluidity and air entraining of concrete compared to natural aggregates like sea sand and river sand. Especially, the use of crushed sand exhibiting bad grain shape and grade was larger adverse effect on the physical properties of concrete. The type of fine aggregates appeared to have negligible influence on the strength for W/C of 55%, 45% while crushed sand decreased the strength for W/C of 35% compared to natural aggregates. It analyzed that the combination of crushed sand exhibiting bad grain shape and grade with natural aggregates improved the characteristics of fresh concrete and had negligible influence on the strength.

  • On the paved track, the railway ballast is used as aggregate for the filling layer using the pre-packed concrete method. The condition of ballast as the paved track aggregate ensure that the compressive strength, particle distribution size for the pouring and surface clearance to increase the adhesive strength with mortar. It is profitable to recycle the existing railway ballast as a economical supply. In order to increase recycling characteristic, it is necessary to apply the similar criterion which does not exceed the conventional railway ballast criterion. Consequently, this paper was to investigate physical characteristics of existing ballast, particle size distribution, compressive and flexural strength, bearing capacity and filling capacity to prepare the aggregate's recycling. As a result, optimized aggregate criterion is suggested.

  • In order to recycle the coal bottom ashes (denoted as BA) produced from a thermal power plant, the artificial aggregates (denoted as AAs) containing BA and red clay were manufactured, and the physical properties of AAs were studied as a function of particle size of BA and batch compositions. As-received BA had 38 wt% coarse particles of above 2 mm and many unburned carbon mass and porous slag particles were co-existed. So the two particle sizes of BA, the fine (< 100 ${\mu}m$) and coarse (< 2 mm), were prepared by milling and screening process. The AAs containing fine BA sintered at $1100{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ had the higher bulk density and lower water absorption compared to the specimen made of coarse BA. The inside core of AAs manufactured by using coarse BA showed nonuniform and porous microstructure, while the AAs made of fine BA had a uniform and dense microstructure. In this research, the AAs containing BA and red clay with various bulk density (1.2~1.7) and water absorption (13~21 %) could be manufactured by controlling the particle size of BA and batch compositions, so the AAs of various physical properties could be applied to the wide fields such as construction/building materials in near future.

  • The purpose of this research is particle shape evaluation of aggregate using Digital Image Process(DIP). DIP is very useful to measure the roughness and particle shape of aggregates. Couple of aggregates, like standard sand, two different crushed stones, and two different marine aggregates, have been employed. Shape factors of two different marine aggregates are ranged 0.35 to 0.54. Crushed stone I is 0.74 which is highly flat, but standard sand is elongated shape. Especially, two marine aggregate showed a big difference of width and length which meaned a long shape. There is any significant difference of elongation ratio and flatness for each aggregate with different measuring system, like direct measurement of vernier calipers and DIP method. Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed.

  • In recent days, while taller and more massive structures such as huge bridges and super skyscrapers have been welcomed, the structural stabilization in design and construction have been gradually limited due to the major weakness of current concrete which is relatively heavier when compared with its strength. To improve the weakness of the current concrete, The lightweight concrete with light weight and high strength should be used; however, not many researchers in Korea have studied on the lightweight concrete. Generally, artificial lightweight aggregate produced through high-temperature-plasticization has a possibility of its body-expansion with many bubbles. Therefore, depending on the size of aggregate, the effects of bubbles on the specific weight and strength of the lightweight concrete should be studied. In this study, considering grain-size, the mix design of the artificial lightweight aggregate produced through the high-temperature-plasticization and the body-expansion of waste and clay from the fire power plant in Korea was conducted. The experiment to analyze the variation in specific weight and strength of the lightweight concrete was followed. From these experiments, the optimized grain-size ratio of the artificial lightweight aggregate for the enhancement of high-strength from the lightweight concrete was revealed.
