  • The lateral-torsional buckling strengths of the parabolic arches are investigated in this study. The curvatures of a parabolic arch vary along the center line of the arch. Thus, the problem is much more complicated comparing that of arches with constant curvature such as circular arches. Moreover, most of previous studies are limited to the circular arches. In this study, lateral-torsional buckling equations are derived for the arches with varying curvatures considering the warping effects. To obtain the buckling strength of parabolic arches, numerical solutions based on the finite difference technique are provided. The numerical solutions are compared with the those of previous researchers and finite element analyses. Then, the lateral-torsional strengths of parabolic arches are successfully verified. Finally, comparison study of critical buckling loads of parabolic arches with those of circular arches for the various rise to span ratios are discussed.

  • This study presents new analysis method to predict bending behavior of packaging substrate structure by comparing finite element method simulation and measured curvature using 3D scanner. Packaging substrate is easily bent and deflected while undergoing various processes such as curing of prepreg and copper pattern plating. We prepare specimens with various conditions and measure contours of each specimen and compute the residual stresses on deposited films using analytical solution to find the principle of bending. Core and prepreg in packaging substrate are made up of resin and bundles of fiber which exist orthogonally each other. Anisotropic material properties cause peculiar bending behavior of packaging substrate. We simulate the bending deflection with finite element method and verify the simulated deflection with measured data. The plating stress of electrodeposited copper is about 58 MPa. The curing stresses of solder resist and prepreg are about 13 MPa and 6.4 MPa respectively in room temperature.

  • An axial-type turbine design technology is developed. In order to design one-stage turbine, preliminary design method is applied, and then design parameters are chosen after analyzing the gas properties within the turbine passage using the streamline curvature method. Stator blade is designed using C4 Profile, and rotor blade is designed using shape parameters. The output power is measured with various RPM and input power. The experimental result shows that the output power is proportionally decreased with the negative incidence angle.

  • An analytical study on the behavior of composite beams, which are composed of cold-formed profiled steel sheeting and normal strength concrete, is described. An analytical method to trace the nonlinear behavior of a composite beam is developed to include the nonlinear material properties of steel sheeting, reinforcing steel bar and concrete. A simple Power Model has also been proposed for the nonlinear moment-curvature relation of the composite beam. The model, which has been originally used to predict the flexural capacity of the beam to column connections, is adapted to the composite beams. The load-deflection behavior of the beams has been simulated by the step-by-step numerical integration using the moment-curvature relation obtained by the Power Model. The results have been compared with test results.

  • Current torsional provisions focus n restricting torsional effect of asymmetric wall structures by proportioning strength of wall based on the traditional assumption that stiffness and strength are independent. Recent studies have pointed out that stiffness of structural wall is dependent on the strength. This implies that actual stiffness of walls can be determined only after torsional design is finished and current torsional provisions may result in significant errors. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes deformation based torsional design for asymmetric wall structures. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Main purpose of deformation based torsional design is not to restrict torsional response but to ensure intended torsional mechanism according to the capacity design concept. Because displacement and rotation angle can be used as performance criteria indicating performance level of asymmetric structures, this method can be applied to the performance based seismic design effectively.

  • For the far field radiation pattern of a microstrip array antenna which is conformed to a cylindrical surface and forms an arc array, an approximate analysis method using FOURIER TRANSFORM is presented. In this method, the conformal array antenna is projected on the effective aperture plane and assumed to be an aperiodic array with nonlinear phase tilt. The effective aperture plane includes four end-points of each arc on the cylindrical surface. When the effective aperture ratio which is normalized to the planar type is from 1.0 to 0.9, it is confirmed that this approximate method is valid. To the array on the effective aperture plane, it is assumed that the phase tilt is due to the distance between aperture plne and curvature surface. Specially, when the radius of arc is more than 5 times to its length, the FOURIER TRANSFORM METHOD could be used with only varying scale factors. The results of calculating by approximate method are good agreement with the results of COORDINATE TRANSFORM METHOD and experimentally measured value in the range of -40dB. And, the difference of half power angle is less than 5 degrees when the effective aperture ratio moer than 0.9.

  • In this paper, the existing formulas of the step-by-step method were generalized for effective estimation of responses of complicated composite sections due to long-term deformation of concrete. The initial transformed section properties of the composite section were derived from material and section properties of concrete section and sections which confine the longterm deformation of concrete. The transformed section properties at each step were derived from the effective modulus of elasticity considered the creep coefficient variation. Improved formulas of the step-by-step method for generalized responses were derived by introducing 5 generalized parameters. The formulas can be more simplified by applying constant increment of creep coefficient at each step. The constant increment of creep coefficient at each step can also reduce computing time and make equal computing error of each step. The generalized responses for axial elastic strain of concrete section were most sensitive to the area rate of concrete section, and the ratio of the second moment of the confining section area was more sensitive than that of the concrete section. Those for elastic curvature of concrete section were most sensitive to the ratio of the second moment of concrete section area.

  • The homogeneity of the compacted ground was analyzed using drone-based remote terrain and gravity field data. Among the topographic elements calculated by the hydrological algorithm, the topographic curvature effectively showed the shape of the surface that occurred during the compaction process, and the non-uniformly compacted area could be identified. The appropriate resolution of the digital topography requires a precision of about 10 cm. Gravity field Interpretation was performed to analyze the spatial density change of the compacted ground. In the distribution of residual bouguer gravity anomaly, the non-homogeneously compacted area showed a different magnitude of gravity than the surrounding area, and the difference in compaction was identified through gravity-density modeling. From the results, it is expected that the topographic element and gravitational field analysis method can be used to evaluate the homogeneity of the compacted ground.

  • A numerical method of the CSF(Continuum Surface Force) model is presented for the calculation of the surface tension force and implemented in an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). The present method(code) employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with volume capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The application of the present method to a 2-D liquid drop problem is illustrated by an equilibrium and nonequilibrium oscillating drop calculation. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately surface tension-dominant multiphase flows.

  • The line heating method is a popular technique used to form ship hull in shipyards. In order to promote shipbuilding productivity, some researchers have made progress in their studies on automatic fabrication system for plate forming. These researches have, however, focused on heat-induced plate deformation with particular mechanical modelings, and do not yet propose the heating paths applicable to actual plate forming process. In this paper, a new algorithm to determine heating lines is developed to simulate the line heating process. The important feature of this algorithm is that it calculates principal curvatures of deflection difference surface which represents difference between target surface and surface in fabrication. Several trials to typical surface types show its usefulness and good applicability to tactical use.
