  • A numerical modelling was performed to predict unsteady combustion processes for the AP/HTPB/Al propellant in a solid rocket motor. Its results were compared with the experimental data. Temporal pressure development was found to match quite well with measured data. A change in propellant surface was traced using the moving grid. The propellant thickness change was also observed to confirm the erosive burning effect.

  • Hybrid rockets have many advantages over solid and liquid rockets. Hybrid rockets put forth high $I_{sp}$ like liquid rockets in spite of simple structure and low cost. As oxidizer flow rate is increased, thrust of hybrid rocket is increased accordingly. In this study, lab-scale hybrid rocket is designed, fabricated and tested. This system consists of lab-scale hybrid rocket motor, ignition system, flow system and data aquisition system. In order to control oxidizer flow rate, we construct flow rate control system by using needle valve and stepping motor.

  • The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the solid propellant rocket engine. The two step global reaction model for condensed phase and five step global reaction mechanism for gas phase are adopted to predict the detailed flame structure near double-base solid propellant surface. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the PaSR(Partially Stirred Reactor) model. To reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect, the Low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is employed. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the turbulent combustion processes and transient behavior of pressure and temperature fields in the solid propellant rocket engine.

  • The behaviors of combustion-induced internal flows of SRM equipped with fin-slot grain and submerged nozzle are very complex and diverse. Cold air-flow tests for 2D and 3D scale models of SRM have been done in order to specify the visualization method to analyze particular internal flow patterns such as roll-torque inducing flow. Swirl flow induced by asymmetric vortical tubes also has been visualized through employing various light source and recording directions.

  • In this paper, the numerical analysis for heat conduction of silica/phenolic composite material, which is used for solid rocket nozzle liner or insulator, was conducted. 1-D Finite Difference Method for the analysis of silica/phenolic during the firing of solid rocket motor was used to calculate the heat conduction considering the surface ablation and the thermal decomposition. The boundary condition at the nozzle wall took into account the convective heat transfer, which was obtained by integration equation. The numerical results of the surface ablation and char depth were compared with the results of test motor that is TPEM-10. It was found that the result of calculation is favorably agreed with the thermal response of test motor.

  • The prediction of combustion instability is important to avoid an obvious threat to the structural safety and the motor performance because it affects the apparent response function of the propellant, the burning rate, and a mean flow Mach number at the local surface. The combustion instability occurs in case acoustic waves were coupled with the combustion/flow dynamic frequency. In this paper, an acoustic instability model is derived from the nonlinear wave equation for analysing acoustic dynamics in solid rocket motors. The chamber pressure and burning rate effects on combustion instability have been investigated.
