  • Three-dimensional computer modeling using FLAC3D had been carried out fur evaluating the thermal-mechanical stability of a high-level radioactive waste repository excavated in several hundred deep location. For effective modeling, a FISH program was made and the geological conditions and rock properties achieved from the drilling sites in Kosung and Yusung areas were used. Sensitivity analysis fer the stresses and temperatures from the modeling designed utilizing fractional factorial design was carried out. From the sensitivity analysis, the important design parameters and their interactions could be determined. From this study, it was found that deposition hole spacing is the most important parameter on the thermal and mechanical stability. The second and third most important parameters were disposal tunnel and buffer thickness.

  • For the probabilistic risk assessment of the high level radioactive waste repository, some methods have been proposed up to now. Since the system has highly uncertain input parameters, the evaluated risk for some input parameter values has high uncertainty. In this paper, methods of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis are devised to analyse systematically these factors and applied to a probabilistic risk assessment model of the high level waste repository, The statistical package SPUSA developed through this study can be used for any other fields, e.g., statistical thermal margin analysis, source term uncertainty analysis, etc.

  • In order to develop a safe geological disposal concept for the HLW from the nuclear power plants in Korea, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of the disposal concept in an underground research tunnel in the same geological formation as the host rock mass. The design concept of a research tunnel depends on the actual disposal concept, repository geometry, experiments to be carried at the tunnel, and geological conditions. In this study, geological investigation had been carried out to develop the basic design of the small scale underground disposal research tunnel in KAERI.

  • To characterize the geological features in the study area for high-level radioactive waste disposal research, KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has been performing several geological investigations such as geophysical surveys and borehole drillings since 1997. Especially, the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) constructed to understand the deep geological environments in 2006. Recently, the deep boreholes, which have 500 m depth inside the left research module of the KURT and 1,000 m depth outside the KURT, were drilled to confirm and validate the results from a geological model. The objective of this research was to investigate hydrogeological conditions using a 3-D geological model around the KURT. The geological analysis from the surface and borehole investigations determined four important geologicla elements including subsurface weathered zone, low-angled fractures zone, fracture zones and bedrock for the geological model. In addition, the geometries of these elements were also calculated for the three-dimensional model. The results from 3-D geological model in this study will be beneficial to understand hydrogeological environment in the study area as an important part of high-level radioactive waste disposal technology.

AMBER 코드는 핵종 이동 계산을 위해 여러 개의 구획을 설정하고 구획간의 핵종 이동은 핵종 전이 계수(mass transfer coefficient)를 이용하여 계산한다.

  • Long-term shear behavior of the rock discontinuities should be analyzed and its stability should be evaluated to ensure the long-term stability of a high-level radioactive waste disposal repository. The long-term shear behavior of the discontinuities can be modeled with creep and RSF models. The shear creep test, velocity step test, and slide-hold-slide test can be performed to determine their model parameters or analyze the shear behavior by experiments under various conditions. Testing apparatuses for direct shear, triaxial compression, and biaxial shear were mainly used and improved to reproduce the thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions of local bedrock, and it was confirmed that the shear behavior could vary. In order to design a high-level radioactive waste disposal site in Korea, the long-term behavior of rock discontinuities should be investigated in consideration of rock types, thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions, metamorphism, and restoration of shear resistance.

To achieve the purpose, several geological investigations such as geophysical and borehole fracture surveys were carried out simultaneously. As a result, 7 fracture zones were identified in deep borehole located in the KURT. As one of important parts of site characterization on KURT area, the results will be used to revise the geological model of the study area.

  • In cases of high-level radioactive waste repositories, heat load is apparent by radioactive waste decay. The safety of a waste repository would be influenced by changing circumstances caused by heat transfer through rock. Thus, a ventilation system is necessary to secure the waste repository. The first priority for building an appropriate ventilation system is completing a computer simulation research with thermal rock properties and a heat transfer coefficient. In this study, the heat transfer coefficient in KURT was calculated using the measurement of inner circumstance factors that include dry bulb and wet bulb temperature, rock surface temperature, and barometric pressure. The heater that is 2 m in length and 5 kw in capacity heats the inside of rock in the research module by $90^{\circ}C$. As a result of determining the heat transfer coefficient in the heating section, the changes of heat transfer coefficient were found to be a maximum of 7.9%. The average heat transfer coefficient is approximately 4.533 w/$m^2{\cdot}K$.

  • A waste container, one of the key compartments in a multi-barrier system for a potential high level radioactive waste (HLW) repository in Korea ensures the mechanical stability against the lithostatic pressure of a deep geologic strata and the swelling pressure of the bentonite buffer. Also, it prohibits potential release of radionuclides for a certain period of time. before it is corroded by impurities. Even though the materials of a waste container is carefully chosen and all manufacturing processes are under heavy quality assurance, there might be a slight chance of intial defects in a waste container. Also, during the deposition of a waste container in a repository, there might be a chance of an incident affecting the integrity of a waste container. In this study, the FEP's and the scenarios over radiological impact of a potential initial waste container defect was developed. Then the total system performance assessment on this initial waste container failure (ICF) scenario was carried out by the MASCOT-K, one of the probabilistic safety assessment tools KAERI has developed. Results show that for the data set studied in this paper, the annual individual dose by the ICF scenario well meets the KINS regulation.
