  • A monitoring system for the subway structures using prestrained FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor packages had pre-strain controllable fixtures. Tensile and compressive strain of the structure could be measured without slip. The FBG sensor system was applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the narrow tunnel construction, for the electric power cables and telecommunication cables, started. We wanted to measure the deformations of the subway structures due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensors had the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well.

  • The Cartesian grid system has generally been used in casting simulations, even though it does not represent sloped and curved surfaces very well. These distorted boundaries cause several problems, and special treatment is necessary to resolve them. A cut cell method on a Cartesian grid has been developed for the simulation of threedimensional mold filling. Cut cells at a cast/mold interface are generated on Cartesian grids, and the governing equations are computed using the volume and areas of the cast at the cut cells. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the partial cell treatment (PCT) that can consider the cutting cells which are cut by the cast and the mold. This method provides a better representation of the surface geometry, and will be used in the computation of velocities that are defined on the cell boundaries in the Cartesian gird system. Various test examples for several casting process are computed and validated.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyse the thermal response behavior occurring in the charring ablative material more realistically by considering ablation and char phenomena occurring in several material layers, and to increase the reliability of thermal analysis by being able to get stable solutions through using the finite analytic method. A program has been developed to predict the temperature distribution, ablation thickness, char thickness, ablation velocity and char velocity by solving non-linear one-dimensional heat conduction equation. Results of calculation were compared with results of published papers. From this compariosn this program was proved to be a very good tool for thermal design and analysis of charring ablative materials used in the rocket propulsion system.

  • This paper focuses on steel arrays regarding the application of PV system for solar power system, a renewable energy in steel structure stadium that will be built in Korea, by foreign case study. 20 cases of Steel Structure Stadiums applying PV system after 1990 were selected as the main subjects. The 20 cases of Steel Structure Stadiums were categorized by rail systems that were installed to fix PV module. As the result, linear clamping and roof-integrated type among cross rails were 28% of the whole, followed by 17% of rail-fixed type and 11% of module group-fixed type among vertical-fixed types. In addition, linear clamping and roof-integrated type among cross rails were applied in the inside of the stadium while the outside and other parts of stadiums used angle bracket to fix PV module.

  • The two-dimensional Random-Walk model in which fluid and pollutant particles are tracked using statistical concept was developed to simulate dispersion processes in natural streams. The calibration of the model shows that the error decreases as the number of grid increases, and/or the number of particles in each grid increases. The proposed model is tested against the dispersion data collected in the Grand River, Canada. The simulation results show that the 2-D Random-Walk model describes two-dimensional mixing phenomena occurred in the irregular meandering stream very accurately.

  • FBG sensor peaks could be split due to polarization by shear strain, when the fiber optic sensors embedded or attached to the structure. For the fiber optic sensor packages, sensor grating has to be protected from shear strains. Also, pretension has to be applied to the sensor because compressive strain must be measured. Without pretension of sensor, the sensor does not show any change of signal until it is stretched. In order to mesure compressive and tensile strains, two fixing point and prestressed sensor need. In the fixing point, just holding the optical fiber cause slip between core and cladding in the fiber. A Fixation method of prestressed FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor package has the prestress controllable fixtures at the fixing points. Prestress to the sensor imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts make it easy to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The fiber optic sensor packages applied to the actual structure and the structural monitoring system using the package can be applied to safety through surveillance.
